Kota Kinabalu, colloquially referred to as KK, is the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia. It is also the capital of the Kota Kinabalu District as well as the West Coast Division of Sabah. The city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies to its west and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is located to its east. Kota Kinabalu has a population of 452,058 according to the 2010 census; when the adjacent Penampang and Putatan districts are included, the metro area has a combined population of 628,725. The 2020 Census revealed an increase in the municipal population to 500,421, while the wider area including the Penampang and Putatan districts had a population of 731,406.
Sepanggar is a sub-district of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. It is located around Sepanggar Bay which houses the Sepanggar Bay Container Terminal, a major naval base for the Royal Malaysian Navy as well as the Sepanggar Bay Oil Terminal. The main campus for Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Teknologi MARA Sabah, Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic and Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), are situated here. Sepanggar is also a parliamentary constituency (P.171) and is currently represented by Azis Jamman of Warisan. The constituency is further divided into the two state legislative assembly constituencies of Karambunai (N.12) and Inanam (N.13).

Sekolah Menengah Sains Sabah is a fully residential school established in Malaysian state of Sabah. As the first fully residential school in East Malaysia and the 27th of its kind in Malaysia, SMESH was previously known as Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Sabah (SBPS). SMESH was established in 1978 but became fully operational on 1 January 1984. It has a 16-acre (65,000 m2) permanent campus in Bukit Padang, Kota Kinabalu. Due to the unsafe state of the campus, SMESH is temporarily operated in a temporary campus in Tuaran.

Datuk Seri Panglima Md Salleh bin Md Said, commonly known as Salleh Said Keruak, is a Malaysian politician who has served as Member of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly for Usukan from February 1994 to March 2004, from May 2013 to May 2018 and again since September 2020. He served as the Minister of Communications and Multimedia in the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration under former Prime Minister Najib Razak from July 2015 to the collapse of the BN administration in May 2018, 9th chief minister of Sabah from December 1994 to May 1996, Speaker of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly from December 2010 to July 2015, Senator from July 2015 to July 2018 and Member of Parliament (MP) for Kota Belud from April 1995 to March 2008. He is also the son of Mohammad Said Keruak, the 4th chief minister of Sabah and the 7th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah as well as the cousin of Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis, the Kota Belud MP.
Datuk Christina Liew is a Hong Kong-born Malaysian politician who has served as the State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment of Sabah for the second term in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) state administration under Chief Minister Hajiji Noor since January 2023 and the first term in the Heritage Party (WARISAN) state administration under former Chief Minister Shafie Apdal from May 2018 to the collapse of the WARISAN administration in September 2020 as well as Member of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Api-Api since May 2013. She also served as the Deputy Chief Minister III in the WARISAN administration under Shafie from May 2018 to September 2020, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tawau from May 2018 to November 2022. She is a member of the People's Justice Party (PKR), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition and formerly Barisan Alternatif (BA) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition coalitions. She has served as Vice President of PH since September 2017 and State Chairperson of PH of Sabah since August 2017. She has also served as Member of the Central Leadership Council (MPP) of PKR and Division Chairperson of Kota Kinabalu of PKR since July 2022. She also served as the State Chairperson of PKR of Sabah from October 2016 to her removal from the position in August 2022. She was also the Vice President of PKR. She was a member of the United Sabah Party (PBS) and Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), component parties of the Gagasan Rakyat (GR) and Barisan Nasional (BN) coalitions.
Chan Foong Hin is a Malaysian politician and chemical engineer who has served as the Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities in the Unity Government administration under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Minister Johari Abdul Ghani since December 2023 and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kota Kinabalu since May 2018. Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup is a Malaysian politician, lawyer and economist who has served as the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security in the Unity Government administration under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Minister Mohamad Sabu since December 2023 and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Pensiangan since May 2018. He served as the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation in the PH administration under Prime Minister Anwar and Minister Chang Lih Kang from December 2022 to December 2023, Deputy Minister of Works in the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration under former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former Minister Fadillah Yusof from August 2021 to the collapse of the BN administration in November 2022 and the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Economic Affairs in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration under former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former Minister Mustapa Mohamed from March 2020 to the collapse of the PN administration in August 2021. KK Sentral or also called as KK Sentral Bus Terminal is a bus station in the city of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. The terminal sits on a three-hectare site of land and operating express bus services from the city to Beaufort, Sipitang, Menumbok, Lawas and Brunei.

The former senator received the 2023 International Women of Courage Award, which was presented to her and other nominees by Jill Biden and Anthony J. Blinken. On 9 July 2023, she officially became a member of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU), a component party of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
