Dr Sarath Samarage is a well-known Sri Lankan consultant/community physician and a national consultant to the World Health Organization. [1] [2] [3]

Early life

Samarage was born in Colombo, received his primary and secondary education at Nalanda College, Colombo. While at school he was the editor of the school's magazine, editor Cricket Souvenir Buddhist Society, Secretary-Science Society, Literary Society. Later he entered University of Colombo's medical faculty and graduated with a MBBS, becoming a Medical Doctor. Samarage also obtained a MSc and an MD from the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine at the University of Colombo, in addition to a Master in Public Health (MPH) from the Johns Hopkins University. Career

Samarage was also the former Deputy Director General Planning, Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka. [5] He is also the current President of Association of Medical Doctors of Asia -SRI LANKA Chapter. [6] Smarage was the President of the Lions Club of Panadura [ when? ]. [7] He was also the former President of the Medical Administrators of Sri Lanka.[ when? ] [8] [9] He is the Chairman of the St. John Ambulance Association and Brigade of Sri Lanka.

Knighthood

In 2019 Samarage received a Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth in recognition of his service through St. John's Ambulance Association and Brigade Sri Lanka. [10]

Senaka Bibile was a Sri Lankan pharmacologist. He was the founder of Sri Lanka's drug policy, which was used as a model for development of policies based on rational pharmaceutical use in other countries as well by the World Health Organization, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Non-Aligned Movement. Due to the far reaching effects of his proposals and policies, he has been called the 'greatest medical benefactor of humanity that Sri Lanka has hitherto produced'.

The Sri Lanka National Pharmaceuticals Policy was established in the 1970s following the submission of a report by Dr S.A. Wickremasinghe and Prof. Seneka Bibile. It aimed at ensuring that people get good quality drugs at the lowest possible price and that doctors would prescribe the minimum required drugs to treat the patient's illness. It was a pioneer in the field of rational National pharmaceuticals policy.

Sanath Rathnayake Weerakoon, is a Sri Lankan former government agent. He served as the government agent for the District of Colombo (1990–1999), Sri Lanka, and is considered one of the most distinguished and respected officers in the Sri Lankan Administrative Service. He served as the government agent of Colombo for 10 years under two different governments and is a feat that has not yet been broken. Weerakoon was also the youngest appointed government agent, to the District of Puttalam in 1978. The government agent is the administrative had of public services in the district. The post is one of the oldest in the civil service as it had been established by the British during the colonial era. Weerakoon is the current add. private secretary to the president of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has a free and universal health care system. It scores higher than the regional average in healthcare having a high Life expectancy and a lower maternal and infant death rate than its neighbors. It is known for having one of the world's earliest known healthcare systems and has its own indigenous medicine system.

Emergency medical services in Sri Lanka is being established using a public/private system aimed at the provision of emergency ambulance service, including emergency care and transportation to hospitals. The Pre-Hospital Care Committee is part of the Trauma Secretariat of the Sri Lanka Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition and was established following the 2004 tsunami. The goal of the Pre-Hospital Care Sub-Committee is “During this generation and continuing for future generations, everyone in Sri Lanka will have access to trained pre-hospital medical personnel, ambulances are available to transport the sick and injured safely to hospitals, complications from harmful or inadequate pre-hospital care is eliminated so physician and nursing personnel at hospitals are delivered patients they are able to professionally treat and rehabilitate back to society as contributing citizens.” Pre-Hospital care is an essential, core component of trauma system.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine</span>

The South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) is a privately owned educational institution providing higher education in Sri Lanka. It is recognised as a degree awarding institute under section 25A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978. In 2018, the parliament of Sri Lanka passed a special provisions act to abolish SAITM Medical faculty and to transfer the students to General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

E.M. Wijerama, FRCP was a Sri Lankan physician and philanthropist. He was the first President of the Ceylon College of Physicians and former President of the Ceylon Medical Association.

Ravindra Fernando is a Sri Lankan forensic pathologist, toxicologist, physician, author and academic. He is the current chairman of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board of Sri Lanka.

Chaminda Chiran Jayasundara obtained his bachelor's degree in Statistics from the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka in 2000, MSc in Information Management from the University of Sheffield, UK in 2002 and Doctor of Literature and Philosophy in Information Science from the University of South Africa in 2010.
