Saratha A. Goggins (born 1950/51) is an American politician who served as the first woman mayor of East Cleveland,Ohio.
Goggins served on the East Cleveland City Council for a very long time and eventually became its president. [3] On September 1,2004, [3] she was sworn in as mayor of East Cleveland after the resignation of her predecessor who was convicted of racketeering,extortion,mail fraud,and tax evasion, [4] [5] making her the first female and 4th African-American mayor of East Cleveland.
In the October 2005 primary election,running as a Democrat,she was defeated by Eric J. Brewer who earned 54.90% of the vote to her 29.96% [3] after news broke that she had been convicted in May 1983 of voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing to death her boyfriend on September 30,1982. [6] [1] [2] She stated that the stabbing was in self-defense. [7]
Stephanie Tubbs Jones was an American politician who served as the U.S. representative for Ohio's 11th congressional district from 1999 until her death in 2008. A member of the Democratic Party,her district encompassed most of Downtown and Eastern Cleveland and many of the eastern suburbs in Cuyahoga County,including Euclid,Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights. She was the first African American woman to be elected to Congress from Ohio.

The Santa Line Slaying was a nationally publicized incident that occurred on December 21,1971,in Cleveland,Ohio. The incident resulted in the death of one man,Jack Fitzpatrick. Tyrone Howard was convicted of manslaughter and served 11 months in prison. In 2005,the incident attracted some attention again when it was revealed that Tyrone Howard is the father of actor Terrence Howard,who witnessed the incident as a young boy. Terrence Howard gave an interview on Oprah about the incident,but his account of what happened was later contradicted by his father,who accused him of trying to garner publicity for his own career.
The Melissa King assault case was an incident in Cleveland,Ohio in 2003 when personal animosity between two girls led to an attack by eighteen youths aged between eight and fifteen on a thirteen-year-old white girl named Melissa King. Of the eighteen children,six were convicted. The attack occurred on May Day,on which black children hold a custom of "Beat up a White Kid" day. While defense lawyers contended and prosecutors acknowledged that the attack sprang from a personal vendetta between Melissa and one girl,the judge ruled that May Day did exist,that the victim was attacked because she was white,and that the attack was done to uphold the May Day tradition.
Crystal Gail Mangum is a former exotic dancer and convicted murderer from Durham,North Carolina,who is best known for having made false allegations of rape against lacrosse players in the 2006 Duke lacrosse case. The fact that Mangum was a black woman working in the sex industry,while the accused were all white men,created extensive media interest and academic debate about race,class,gender and the politicization of the justice system.
Jessie Marie Davis was a murdered,near-term pregnant,26-year-old American woman first reported missing from her home in Lake Township,Stark County,Ohio on June 15,2007. The case drew an extraordinary response from the American media. On February 15,2008,Bobby Lee Cutts Jr.,a police officer and the father of her 2-year-old son and unborn daughter,was convicted of the aggravated murders of Davis and their unborn child. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole for 57 years on February 27,2008. A high-school friend of Cutts,Myisha Lynne Ferrell,was also later charged.

Nina Hudson Turner is an American politician and television personality. Turner was the Democratic nominee for Ohio Secretary of State in 2014,but lost in the general election against incumbent Jon Husted,receiving 35.5 percent of the vote. Her politics have been variously described as progressive,left-wing,or far-left.
Anthony Edward Sowell was an American serial killer and rapist known as The Cleveland Strangler. He was convicted in 2011 of murdering 11 women whose bodies were discovered at his Cleveland,Ohio,home in 2009. After being sentenced to death for the murders,Sowell died in prison from a terminal illness.
Jeffrey D. Johnson is an American politician and attorney who served as a member of Cleveland City Council for Ward 10 from 2014 to 2018. Johnson served as councilman for Ward 8 from 1984 to 1990 and as a member of the Ohio Senate from 1990 to 1998.
Between 2002 and 2004,Ariel Castro kidnapped Michelle Knight,Amanda Berry,and Georgina "Gina" DeJesus from the streets of Cleveland,Ohio and later held them captive in his home of 2207 Seymour Avenue in the city's Tremont neighborhood. All three girls were imprisoned at Castro's home until 2013,when Berry successfully escaped with her six-year-old daughter,to whom she had given birth while imprisoned,and contacted the police. Police rescued Knight and DeJesus,and arrested Castro hours later.
Michael Madison is an American convicted serial killer and sex offender from East Cleveland,Ohio who is known to have committed the murders of at least three women over a nine-month period in 2012 and 2013. He was arrested and charged with the crimes in 2013 and in 2016,he was sentenced to death. Madison is currently being held on death row.
Romona Robinson is an American television news anchor in Cleveland,Ohio. She is the first African American woman to anchor a nightly newscast in Cleveland,and the first solo anchor of a weeknight newscast in that city. She is a member of the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame,and is an eight-time recipient of the Lower Great Lakes Emmy Awards. She is currently retired,having appeared weeknights on Cleveland TV newscasts for 30 years - first on then independent station (now CW affiliate WUAB channel 43,later on NBC affiliate WKYC channel 3,and finally on CBS affiliate WOIO Channel 19.
On October 12,2012,Ryan Carter Poston,an American attorney from Fort Mitchell,Kentucky,was shot to death by his on-again off-again girlfriend Shayna Michelle Hubers. After a trial in the Campbell County circuit court,Hubers was convicted of murder on April 23,2015. She was sentenced to 40 years in the Kentucky Department of Corrections on August 14,2015,with parole eligibility after 34 years. On August 25,2016,Hubers’s conviction was overturned on appeal when one of the jurors in her murder trial was revealed to be a convicted felon. Hubers was convicted of murder during her second trial on August 28,2018. On October 18,2018 she was sentenced to life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 20 years.
Thomia Hunter was convicted in 2005 of killing her ex-boyfriend in 2004,who had been abusing her. She was sentenced to life in prison for stabbing Andrew Harris 22 times. During her trial Hunter testified that Harris began the attack by beating,choking,pouring hot sauce in her eyes and cutting her with a knife. In 2019 then Ohio Governor John Kasich commuted Hunter's sentence,setting her free from prison on July 15,2019. Her release was contingent on her completion of a reintegration program sponsored by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
A story in the newspaper at that time did not identify Goggins by name, reporting only that police arrested a 31 year old East Cleveland woman who was screaming as she tried to get into a parked car.
The disclosure came after The Plain Dealer obtained a copy of a coroner's report that said Goggins admitted stabbing Price during a fight in his home on Sept. 30, 1982.
