Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre and Research Institute, formerly known as "Cancer Centre Welfare Home & Research Institute" [1] is a hospital that is spread over an area of 16 acres of land. It is a fully comprehensive, dedicated cancer hospital with 311 beds and over 850 staff members. [2] This is a non-profitable organization. The SGCC&RI is located in Thakurpukur, on the outskirts of the city of Kolkata, West Bengal. It is one of the oldest Cancer treatment centre of Kolkata.
The specialties at the SGCC&RI include Surgical Oncology, Radiotherapy, Medical Oncology, Haemato-Oncology, Radiology, Pain & Palliative Care, Supportive Therapy, Pathology and Microbiology, Molecular Genetic Lab, Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Dialysis Unit. [2]
In 1973 with the help of few doctors and social workers, Saroj Gupta started a 25 bedded hospital to serve patients from the underprivileged sector, suffering from cancer. [2] The family of Late Chintaharan Das donated a piece of marshy land at Thakurpukur, where the Saroj Gupta Cancer and Research Institute came up. This newly founded hospital started catering to the people who came from rural areas for their cancer treatment. The hospital raised its first fund from a drama staged by a group called Sikha, which was based on a story written by the founder, Saroj Gupta himself, where he himself enacted the role of a poor cancer patient who was denied a bed in the city hospital.
It is recognized by the World Health Organization and has a membership with Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), Geneva, Switzerland.
Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre and Research Institute had organized a month-long awareness programme on Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), with the support of Warwick University Development Education WD (City of London), Nara Medical University (Japan), Dental School (London), and ITTE (Mangalore). The NRT programme was organized with the objective to create an awareness on the dangerous habit of chewing and smoking tobacco. [3]
The SGCC & RI runs post-graduate degree courses which are recognized by Central Council and it also houses a library with up-to-date national and internationally reviewed journals. [2]
Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a medically approved way to treat people with tobacco use disorder by taking nicotine through means other than tobacco. It is used to help with quitting smoking or stopping chewing tobacco. It increases the chance of quitting tobacco smoking by about 55%. Often it is used along with other behavioral techniques. NRT has also been used to treat ulcerative colitis. Types of NRT include the adhesive patch, chewing gum, lozenges, nose spray, and inhaler. The use of multiple types of NRT at a time may increase effectiveness.

The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) is a unique pan-European non-profit clinical cancer research organisation established in 1962 operating as an international association under Belgium law. It develops, conducts, coordinates and stimulates high-quality translational and clinical trial research to improve the survival and quality of life of cancer patients. This is achieved through the development of new drugs and other innovative approaches, and the testing of more effective therapeutic strategies, using currently approved drugs, surgery and/or radiotherapy in clinical trials conducted under the auspices of a vast network of clinical cancer researchers supported by 220 staff members based in Brussels. The EORTC has the expertise to conduct large and complex trials especially specific populations such as the older patient and rare tumours.
The Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) at Thiruvananthapuram is a cancer care hospital and research centre. RCC was established in 1981 by the Government of Kerala and the Government of India. It is located in the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College campus in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of the state of Kerala. It was established as an expansion of the Radiation Therapy / Radiotherapy department of Medical College Trivandrum. It is a tertiary care center for the managements of all types of cancers. Josep Baselga i Torres, known in Spanish as José Baselga, was a Spanish medical oncologist and researcher focused on the development of novel molecular targeted agents, with a special emphasis in breast cancer. Through his career he was associated with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology, and the Massachusetts General Hospital in their hematology and oncology divisions. He led the development of the breast cancer treatment Herceptin, a monoclonal antibody, that targets the HER2 protein, which is impacted in aggressive breast cancers.
Tobacco Cessation Clinic is an initiative by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health of India. Tobacco cessation activities formally began with the opening of 13 tobacco cessation clinics in Anand, Bhopal, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Delhi (2), Goa, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Patna in 2002. Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute(CNCI) is a cancer care hospital and research institute and one of the 27 regional cancer centres in India. It is located in Kolkata near Jatin Das Park metro station at Hazra More (crossing). It was formally inaugurated by Prof. Madam J.Curie on 2 January 1950, as Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, named after Chittaranjan Das, who donated land and property for the cause. This campus( first campus) also serves as a cancer research centre.
