Sattyakee D'com Bhuyan is an Indian actor, director, playwright, writer, and theatre activist from Guwahati, Assam. [1]

Personal life

Sattyakee D'com Bhuyan was born in 1973 in Guwahati, Assam, India. He is the son of Dhiru Bhuyan, an actor and filmmaker. [2]

Early life and education

Bhuyan completed his schooling at Faculty Higher Secondary School, Amingaon and went on to receive his bachelor of arts degree in English from Cotton College in 1994. [3] In 2000, he completed his master of arts in sociolinguistics at Gauhati University [4] while working at The Telegraph as a correspondent. [5]

Career

Since 1991, Bhuyan has been a columnist, writing articles and features by invitation for various regional and national newspapers and magazines in India. His contributions in the fields of music and culture have been featured in such publications as The Times of India ,[ citation needed ] The Wire , [6] The Sentinel , [7] The Telegraph,[ citation needed ] and The Assam Tribune .[ citation needed ]

From 2005 to 2014, he worked as a communications associate for the International Finance Corporation, based in Kolkata and Dhaka, Bangladesh. [8]

Bhuyan is an adjunct faculty member at the School of Communication and Media at Royal Global University in Guwahati. [9] He is a national mentor for Katha Utsav, [10] a festival of young writers in India, and he conducts various theatre workshops. [11] [12] Additionally, he is the founder of the D'Passion Collective theatre group. [13]

Bhuyan has participated in the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages through his indigenous storytelling in Assamese and Nagamese creole. [14] He has also taken part in TEDx events in Guwahati, including "Wider Horizons" (2017), [15] "Boundaries No More" (2018), [16] and "Reality Rings in Ancient Gongs – The Backstory" (2021). [17]

Acting and directing

Bhuyan has appeared in the 2017 action film Mission China as a sniper. [18] [19]

He directed the 2023 documentary film The Platinum Gong, celebrating the life of musician Lou Majaw. [20] [21]

Ahom–Mughal wars refers to the series of 17th-century conflicts between the Ahoms and the Mughals over the control of the Brahmaputra valley. It began soon after the eastern branch of the Kamata kingdom then under the Koch dynasty, Koch Hajo, collapsed after a sustained Mughal campaign bringing it face-to-face with the eastern Ahoms. After nearly seventy years of sustained efforts, the Mughals were finally ousted in the Battle of Itakhuli in 1682. The Mughals since then maintained interest in the region west of the Manas River via zamindars, till they were ousted from Bengal by the British about a hundred years later.

Gauhati University also known as GU, is a collegiate public state university located in Guwahati, Assam, India. It was established on 26 January 1948 under the provisions of an Act enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly and is the oldest university in Northeast India. As of 2024, Gauhati University is esteemed as the 40th-ranked institution in India according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), securing its position within the top 100 educational institutions. It is accredited with a grade of 'A+' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in its 4th cycle of accreditation on 5 July 2024.

Though the precise Etymology of Assam, a state in India is unclear—there is general agreement that it is related to the Ahom people. Whatever the source of the English name, Assam is itself an anglicization.

Arupa Kalita Patangia was born in 1956 and is an Indian novelist and short story writer and known for her fiction writing in Assamese. Her literary awards include: the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad award, the Katha Prize and the Prabina Saikia Award. In 2014, she received the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for her short stories book named Mariam Austin Othoba Hira Barua. Her books have been translated to English, Hindi, and Bengali. Her works touch upon Assamese history and culture, addressing the lives people from middle and lower income brackets, and focus specifically on concerns of women, violence, and insurgency.

News Live is a 24-hour Indian Assamese-language satellite news channel broadcasting news, current affairs and infotainment programmes. It is owned by Pride East Entertainments Pvt Ltd, a Guwahati based media group whose majority stake is owned by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. News Live has the highest viewership among all Assamese news channels.

Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bora, a medical doctor by profession, is a Guwahati-based Assamese writer and novelist. In a literary career spanning around three decades he has published many critically acclaimed works of fiction and non-fiction including more than twenty four books – Novels, monographs on history, travelogues, collection of articles etc. Most notably, he was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2009.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bordoloi Trophy</span> Football tournament

The Bharat Ratna Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Trophy, commonly known as Bordoloi Trophy, is a premier annual Indian football tournament held in Guwahati and organized by the Guwahati Sports Association (GSA). The tournament was founded in 1952 by Gauhati Town Club. It is named after Assam's first chief minister Gopinath Bordoloi. The prestigious tournament comprises some top clubs from the northeast and rest of India. Clubs from Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Iran and Uzbekistan have also participated in this major championship. Abahani Limited of Bangladesh lifted the 2010 edition trophy.

Rai Bahadur Surya Kumar Bhuyan MBE (1892–1964) was a writer, historian, educator, social activist, storyteller, essayist, professor and a poet from Assam. He has written many books on ancient history, stories, essays, biographies, etc. in the world of Assamese literature. He presided over the Asam Sahitya Sabha (1953) held at Shillong. He was the elected member of Rajya Sabha during 1952–53, and was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1956.

Jupitora Bhuyan is an Indian actress works in the Assamese films. She worked in a few Assamese films along with VCD films and telefilms. She is also part of Assamese mobile theatre industry debut by playing lead female roles in Kohinoor Theatre. She is especially known for playing extraordinary character with a powerful appearance.

Prodyut Kumar Deka is an Indian film and stage director, screenwriter and author based in Assam. His films include Dhunia Tirutabur (2009), Samiran Barua Ahi Ase (2012), Surjasta (2013), and Borosi (2014).

Baharul Islam is an Indian theater actor and alumnus of the National School of Drama, which he joined in 1987. He has acted in more than 80 plays and has designed and directed 30 plays for his theater troupe Seagull. He works as a film actor in Assamese and Hindi cinema.

Rajdweep is an Indian screenwriter, playwright, lyricist and journalist hails from Dhing, Nagaon, Assam. He has been awarded by Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan for his script 'Ishqlogy' at Cinestaan India's Storyteller's Script Contest in 2018. He is the first lyricist from Assam who writes Assamese songs in Bollywood film. He wrote the songs 'Jiri Jiri' for the film A Death In The Gunj and the bihu song for the film Jagga Jasoos. Again, he becomes the first screenwriter from Assam who signed a Bollywood film. He signed the film on 21 October 2019.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Asu Dev</span> A pioneer artist of Assam India

Asu Dev(আশু দেব), born as Ashutosh Deb Dhubri, Assam, India was a pioneer artist of Assam. He was a painter, sculptor and an Art Educator. During his lifetime he had worked as a Textile Designer in several Cotton Mills in Jessore and Khulna in Bangladesh, Ahmedabad, Surat, Kolkata, at the Janata College Titabor Assam and Assam Textile Institute Guwahati, Assam and at Weavers Training Centre in Dimapur Nagaland in the later part of his life. His distinguished style of painting, where he had experimented using fine and minute dots often like modern pixels, which was often addressed by art critics as pointillism. Asu Dev was a self taught artist who created his artworks from minute observation of the Nature and the working class, and his innate exposure to Srimanta Sankardeva the 15th–16th century Assamese saint-scholar, poet, playwright, artist and social-religious reformer. The miniature paintings from the Chitra Bhagawata and the traditional folk arts and culture of the region, becoming the prime subjects of his paintings. During his career spanning about fifty years of Artistic career dating to the 1930s, he had created around 180 Art works, mostly paintings, oil on canvas, water colour tempara, textile designs and motifs, illustrations, sketches, drawings and a few sculptures. In 1952, Asu Dev was among the first artists to hold, one man show in Assam.
