Saturday Down South is an online publication that covers college football and other sports, primarily related to the schools in the Southeastern Conference. It is owned and operated by XLMedia.

Saturday Down South produces daily digital content covering the schools of the SEC. The website has a section for each of the 14 Southeastern Conference schools. Saturday Down South also produces regular content to its social media channels, podcast feeds and YouTube channel. In 2016, Saturday Down South was named one of the 50 must-follow college football Twitter accounts. [1]

The website directly covers the following teams within the Southeastern Conference: The Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, Kentucky Wildcats, LSU Tigers, Mississippi Rebels, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Missouri Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks, Tennessee Volunteers, Texas A&M Aggies, Vanderbilt Commodores. While the focus of the coverage mostly centers around the college football season, Saturday Down South also covers major college sporting events such as March Madness and the College World Series.

History

The website was founded in 2010 and gained popularity among college football fans through its regular commentary and news on SEC football. An early example is when Saturday Down South broke the news of Will Muschamp being hired by the University of Florida. [2] [3]

In 2015, the Saturday Down South team launched another website named Saturday Tradition aimed at the coverage of sports teams within the Big Ten Conference.

In September 2016, Saturday Down South partnered with Texas Pete Hot Sauce [4] and Bud Light [5] on sponsorship campaigns targeting college football fans in the Southeast region of the United States.

In 2017, Saturday Down South launched the Saturday Down South Podcast which can feature notable college football guests such as Paul Finebaum. [6]

In September 2021, Saturday Down South was acquired by XLMedia. [7]

In November 2021, the Saturday Down South team launched another website named Saturday Road aimed at the coverage of the sports teams within the Atlantic Coast Conference. Saturday Road ceased operations in 2024, with ACC coverage being folded into Saturday Down South due in part to the conference's expansion.

In December 2021, the Saturday Down South team launched another website named Saturday Out West aimed at the coverage of the sports teams within the Pac-12 Conference. Due to the defection of all but two Pac-12 member schools, Saturday Out West ceased operations in 2024, with Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington coverage moving to Saturday Tradition as a result of their re-alignment to the Big Ten; Cal and Stanford coverage moved to Saturday Down South with their subsequent moves to the ACC.

In 2017, Saturday Down South spent time with former Ole Miss head coach Billy Brewer in which he reflected on his time since coaching major college football. Billy Brewer coached Ole Miss between the years of 1983 and 1993. [8]

In April 2017, Saturday Down South published the reporting of the events and process on how the University of Alabama was able to hire Nick Saban away from the Miami Dolphins with insights from those around Coach Saban including his wife, Terry Saban. [9]

In May 2017, Saturday Down South published a feature on LSU head coach Ed Orgeron and the small Louisiana community from which he was raised. Orgeron told Saturday Down South, "For my mother and my father, for me to be the head coach at LSU would have been utopia, more than they could ever dream about." [10]

In October 2017, Saturday Down South published a feature on ESPN and SEC Network personality Paul Finebaum. [11]

In 2018, Saturday Down South spent time with former Auburn and NFL running back Cadillac Williams and published a featured story about his career and new role as a high school football coach. [12]

In January 2020 while the LSU Tigers were competing for a national championship, Saturday Down South spent time in quarterback Joe Burrow's hometown of Athens, Ohio. [13]

In June 2022, the Saturday Down South launched an indepth, 4-part series on the evolution of the sport of college softball. Through research, the editorial team noticed the sport is undergoing a major shift where home run numbers are rising throughout the sport. The project involves original reporting and research to dig in and present what is causing this major transition in softball. [14] [15]

He led the 2019 LSU Tigers football team to a national championship, beating the defending champions Clemson in the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship.

Gerard Paul DiNardo is an American former college football player and coach. He played college football as a guard for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish where he was selected as an All-American in 1974. DiNardo served as the head football coach at Vanderbilt University (1991–1994), Louisiana State University (1995–1999), and Indiana University (2002–2004), compiling a career college football record of 59–76–1. In 2001, he was the head coach of the Birmingham Thunderbolts of the XFL.

The 2011 Southeastern Conference football season began on Thursday, September 1, 2011 with Kentucky taking on Western Kentucky on ESPNU. The season concluded on January 9, 2012 as the Alabama Crimson Tide shut out LSU Tigers, 21–0 in the Allstate BCS National Championship Game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans to claim their 14th national championship in school history. It was also the final season for the SEC before Texas A&M and Missouri joined the conference from the Big 12 the following season.

Alabama Crimson Tide football under Nick Saban covers the history of the Alabama Crimson Tide football program from when Nick Saban was hired as head coach in 2007 up until his retirement after the 2023 season. Alabama played as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and was a member of the West Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Tide played its home games at Bryant–Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Their overall official record under Saban was 201–29 (.878), 23 bowl game appearances with 16 victories, ten SEC West titles, nine SEC championships, and six national championships. From 2008 up until his retirement, Saban's teams spent part or all of each season ranked at least top 4 in national polls.

The 2016 Southeastern Conference football season was the 84th season of SEC football and took place during the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The season began on September 1 with Tennessee defeating Appalachian State on the SEC Network. This is the fifth season for the SEC under realignment that took place in 2012 adding Texas A&M and Missouri from the Big 12 Conference. The SEC is a Power Five conference under the College Football Playoff format along with the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big 12 Conference, the Big Ten Conference, and the Pac-12 Conference.

The LSU Tigers football team represents Louisiana State University in the sport of American football. The university has fielded a team every year since it began play in 1893, except in 1918 due to World War I. It has competed in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) since 1933, and in the conference's Western division since 1992. Previously, LSU was a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) from 1896 to 1921 and the Southern Conference (SoCon) from 1922 to 1932. There have been 32 head coaches for the team, starting with Charles E. Coates in 1893. Since 2022, the head coach of the Tigers is Brian Kelly. LSU has played 1,221 games in its 123 seasons of play, and has compiled an all-time record of 772 wins, 405 losses, and 47 ties as of the end of the 2016 season.

The 2017 LSU Tigers football team represented Louisiana State University in the 2017 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Tigers played their home games at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and competed in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). They were led by first-year head coach Ed Orgeron after he led the Tigers as interim head coach for the final eight games of 2016. They finished the season 9–4, 6–2 in SEC play to finish in third place in the Western Division. They were invited to the Citrus Bowl where they lost to Notre Dame.

The Ole Miss Rebels, the football team of the University of Mississippi, was founded in 1893. The state's first football team, the Rebels currently play in the FBS Subdivision of NCAA Division 1 Football and in the West Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
