School pedagogy is a thematic field of pedagogy (educational sciences). As a scientific field, school pedagogy deals at a theoretical and practical level with the development and interaction of scientific concepts related to the organization of school life and teaching. School pedagogy, as a field related to the functions mentioned above, was initially introduced in Germany [1] [2] and later spread to other European countries.

Overview

School pedagogy is a field of study that explores the methods and strategies employed in teaching and learning within a school setting. It encompasses the research, development, and evaluation of teaching practices, assessing their effectiveness and impact on student development. This branch of pedagogy considers various dimensions of the teaching and learning process, including both theoretical and practical approaches. It encompasses classroom organization, the use of instructional materials, integration of technologies, the cultivation of teacher-student relationships, and the assessment of learning outcomes. [3]

A comprehensive understanding of school pedagogy and its research themes is only possible within the context of general pedagogy as a science of education and upbringing, since this scientific discipline is relatively new (compared to philosophy and medicine, for example). It experienced its initial affirmation only in the 19th century and achieved rapid expansion only after the Second World War, particularly in the 1970s. School pedagogy as a scientific discipline is primarily interconnected with the pedagogical sciences, especially didactics, general pedagogy, comparative pedagogy, the history of education and pedagogy, and the methodology of pedagogical research. It also has strong connections with psychology (school psychology), sociology (sociology of education), philosophy (philosophy of education), and logic. [4]

The primary goal of school pedagogy is to ensure high-quality teaching and learning processes, fostering the development of students' intellectual, emotional, and social abilities. It actively engages in assessing changes in students' needs and adapts teaching methods and strategies accordingly. School pedagogy is dynamic, continuously evolving to embrace new developments in education and incorporating technology and innovative teaching practices. It acknowledges the multifaceted role of the teacher as an organizer, leader, and motivator in the learning process, while also recognizing students as active participants in their own learning. [5]

Aligned with the philosophy of education, school pedagogy promotes values such as curiosity, creativity, lifelong learning skills, cooperation, and mutual understanding among students. Its overarching aim is to empower students to develop self-awareness as learners and to be equipped to support the development and success of their future students. Like social constructionism, social constructivism states that people work together to actively construct artifacts. But while social constructivism focuses on cognition, social constructionism focuses on the making of social reality.

In its most common sense, methodology is the study of research methods. However, the term can also refer to the methods themselves or to the philosophical discussion of associated background assumptions. A method is a structured procedure for bringing about a certain goal, like acquiring knowledge or verifying knowledge claims. This normally involves various steps, like choosing a sample, collecting data from this sample, and interpreting the data. The study of methods concerns a detailed description and analysis of these processes. It includes evaluative aspects by comparing different methods. This way, it is assessed what advantages and disadvantages they have and for what research goals they may be used. These descriptions and evaluations depend on philosophical background assumptions. Examples are how to conceptualize the studied phenomena and what constitutes evidence for or against them. When understood in the widest sense, methodology also includes the discussion of these more abstract issues.

Design education is the teaching of theory and application in the design of products, services, and environments, and focuses on the development of both particular and general skills for designing. It is primarily orientated to preparing higher education students for professional design practice, and based around project work and studio or atelier teaching methods, while general education uses design methods to improve materials for teachers and students.

The Ulm School of Design was a college of design based in Ulm, Germany. It was founded in 1953 by Inge Aicher-Scholl, Otl Aicher and Max Bill, the latter being first rector of the school and a former student at the Bauhaus. The HfG quickly gained international recognition by emphasizing the holistic, multidisciplinary context of design beyond the Bauhaus approach of integrating art, craft and technology. Education sciences, also known as education studies, education theory, and traditionally called pedagogy, seek to describe, understand, and prescribe education including education policy. Subfields include comparative education, educational research, instructional theory, curriculum theory and psychology, philosophy, sociology, economics, and history of education. Related are learning theory or cognitive science.

Educational anthropology, or the anthropology of education, is a sub-field of socio-cultural anthropology that focuses on the role that culture has in education, as well as how social processes and cultural relations are shaped by educational settings. To do so, educational anthropologists focus on education and multiculturalism, educational pluralism, culturally relevant pedagogy and native methods of learning and socializing. Educational anthropologists are also interested in the education of marginal and peripheral communities within large nation states. Overall, educational anthropology tends to be considered as an applied field, as the focus of educational anthropology is on improving teaching learning process within classroom settings.

Philosophy education is the practice of teaching and learning philosophy along with the associated scholarly research. It is not philosophy of education, nor the philosophical study of education in general.
