Scott Ian Major (born 4 July 1975) is an Australian actor and TV and film director, known for his roles as Peter Rivers in the 1994 television teen drama series Heartbreak High and Lucas Fitzgerald in soap opera Neighbours . After leaving Neighbours in 2013, Major returned to direct over 200 episodes of the serial. He has since gone on to direct episodes of Playing for Keeps , and two miniseries Lie With Me and Riptide . Major reprised his role as Rivers in the 2022 reboot of Heartbreak High .

Early life and education

Scott Ian Major was born on 4 July 1975. [1] His father was Melbourne radio sports broadcaster Ian Major. [2]

Career

Major's acting debut came in the 1990 TV Movie More Winners: His Master's Ghost. He played Oates, a student in the comedy series Late For School in 1992, [3] and then joined the cast of Neighbours for three months in 1993 as Darren Stark. [4] [5]

Major appeared in the 1993 Australian romantic comedy film The Heartbreak Kid , with Alex Dimitriades and Claudia Karvan. Major reprised his role as Peter Rivers in Heartbreak High from 1994 to 1995. [2] In 1998, he appeared in an episode of All Saints (Season 2 – "If these walls could talk"). Major also guested on Home and Away that year as Murray, a criminal, for five episodes. In 1999 he was cast in the Aussie film Envy (titled as The New Girlfriend in the United States). Two years later he had a small role as a welfare officer in the book to film production He Died with a Felafel in His Hand , the novel was written by John Birmingham.

Major had a major role the Australian drama, Always Greener as Tom Morgan, which was shown on the Seven Network between 2001 and 2003. [3] He also wrote, produced, directed and starred in his own play called Both Sides of the Bar at the 2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Spending two years in the UK, he appeared in an episode of the BBC soap Doctors in 2007 and also starred in the first episode of the second series of Love Soup , a BBC comedy starring Tamsin Greig.

After Major returned to Australia, he was cast as Lucas Fitzgerald in the soap opera Neighbours in July 2008. [4] After five years in the role, Major quit the serial and filmed his exit in June 2013. [6] During his time in Neighbours, Major directed the 2009 production of The Subtle Art of Flirting, which starred his former co-stars Caitlin Stasey and Fletcher Humphrys. The following year, he directed his first episode of Neighbours, which aired in November 2010. [7]

In December 2010, Major told Daniel Kilkelly of Digital Spy that he had directed further episodes of Neighbours with the help of an existing television director. [8] Major admitted that he finds the directing part of his job "very tough to fit it in with the acting" because he is "running from location to location and getting the scene shot and then putting a different hat on and directing a scene." [8] Of his decision to take on the new role, Major has said "I want to do it all. I also do a lot of writing. I write my own plays and put them on, direct and produce them. Australia is a very small industry acting-wise. I've been doing it professionally for 21 years and you just have to have more strings to your bow than acting." [8] In 2019, Major won Best Direction in a TV or SVOD Drama Serial for his work on "Episode 7776A" at the Australian Directors' Guild Awards. He was nominated in the same category for "Episode 7776B". [9] He directed over 200 episodes of Neighbours. [3]

Major directed episodes of the 2018 drama series Playing for Keeps . [10] He also directed the 2021 miniseries Lie With Me created by Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison. [11] The following year, he directed Herbison's psychological thriller series Riptide . [12] He also directed the indie thriller film Line of Fire (also known as Darklands), [3] which was nominated for the 2022 AACTA Award for Best Indie Film. [13] [14]

Major reprised his role of Rivers in Netflix's 2022 reboot of Heartbreak High . [3] Of the changes to his character, Major said "Rivers was a horrible, racist, sexist human being. But by the time he left, he was no longer that person and in this new series, he's on a whole new journey." [3] Rivers is the father of Darren Rivers, one of the main characters, who is queer and non-binary. Major was adamant that Rivers would not be a homophobe and instead accepted Darren for who they were. [3] Major has a part in the upcoming film Residence, playing Cormac the Shepherd. [15]

Personal life

Major is also a musician and plays bass guitar. [2]

He supports the Western Bulldogs in the Australian Football League. [16]

Neighbours is an Australian television soap opera that has aired since 18 March 1985. It was created by television executive Reg Watson. The Seven Network commissioned the show following the success of Watson's earlier soap Sons and Daughters. Although successful in Melbourne, Neighbours underperformed in the Sydney market and was cancelled by Seven four months after it began airing. It was immediately commissioned by rival Network Ten for a second production season, which began screening on 20 January 1986. Neighbours became the longest-running drama series in Australian television history. In 2005, it was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame.

He received a call to play Lucas shortly after he was getting the feel for acting again. Major accepted the role as the character seemed like fun and he wanted to work with his friend Brett Tucker. He made his first screen appearance as Lucas during the episode broadcast on 22 July 2008. The following year, Major signed a new contract and was promoted to the regular cast. On 1 July 2013, it was confirmed that Major had left Neighbours and his character departed on 24 September 2013. He made a brief return on 4 March 2015 for the show's 30th anniversary celebrations. Christopher Milligan is an Australian actor. From 2008 to 2022, he played Kyle Canning in the television soap opera Neighbours. He initially started out as a recurring cast member, until he was promoted to the regular cast in 2011. He departed the program in 2016 but returned in 2019 until April 2022. He then returned again for the show's final episodes in July 2022. Milligan also played the lead role of David in supernatural fantasy show Dead Gorgeous, and made guest appearances in Rush, The Pacific, Winners & Losers, and Arrow. He appeared in the horror film The Gallows Act II, and reprised his Neighbours role after a three-year absence.

The actress's casting was announced on 5 December 2011, though she began filming the week before. Sumarwata and her family relocated to Melbourne and purposely moved near to the studio, so she could manage work and be close to her daughter. The actress stated that she was excited about the role, while the show's executive producer Richard Jasek commented "She's a wonderful actor and we think her character has so many exciting possibilities for us." Sumarwata made her debut screen appearance as Vanessa during the episode broadcast on 14 March 2012.

Neighbours: The Explosion is a storyline from the Australian television soap opera Neighbours, which began on 19 March 2013, when the marquee hosting Toadfish Rebecchi and Sonya Mitchell's wedding reception collapsed after a gas bottle exploded. The storyline also saw the deaths of two regular characters; Rhys Lawson and Priya Kapoor. "Neighbours: The Explosion" was broadcast as the highlight of the serial's 28th anniversary week and executive producer Richard Jasek stated that the wedding was a good opportunity to heighten the drama and have the event affect the whole community. "Episode 6646", also known as "The Eclipse", is the 6646th episode of the Australian soap opera Neighbours. It premiered on Eleven on 20 May 2013. The episode was written by Jason Herbison and directed by Laurence Wilson. Episode 6646 revolves around an annular eclipse, which changes the lives of several Ramsay Street residents. It was first teased by executive producer Richard Jasek in January 2013. The episode saw several storylines play out with Kyle Canning sustaining serious damage to his eyesight, a child kidnapping, the introduction of a new family and the return of two former characters; Mark Brennan and Brad Willis.

<i>Neighbours</i>: The Finale Episode of Neighbours

"Neighbours: The Finale" comprises the 8901st, 8902nd and 8903rd episodes of the Australian television soap opera Neighbours. It premiered on 28 July 2022 on both Network 10 and 10 Peach in Australia, and on 29 July on Channel 5 in the United Kingdom. It was conceived as the end of the serial, after it was cancelled due to the loss of its UK broadcaster and failure to find an alternative buyer, and production ceased after it was filmed. The episodes were written by Shane Isheev and executive producer Jason Herbison, and directed by Scott Major. Production on Neighbours ended on 10 June. Production and cast had known the show was facing cancellation since 2021 and ideas for a suitable finale were already being planned at that point. In response to the news of the show's potential cancellation becoming public in early 2022, an online petition amassed more than 67,000 signatures to save the show. The petition did not change Channel 5's decision, who maintained that Neighbours remained popular and ending the show was solely a "business decision". Production were then tasked with bringing the show to an end within a few months. Herbison had already envisioned an ideal way to end the series, and Isheev and other writers supported his plans. Herbison did not wish to end the show with excessive finality, such as in the destruction of the primary location of Ramsay Street, and opted for a celebratory theme that acknowledged the show's history.

<i>Riptide</i> (2022 TV series) 2022 Australian TV series or program

Riptide is a 2022 British-Australian psychological thriller television series created by Jason Herbison and directed by Scott Major. It was broadcast over four consecutive days from 27 December 2022 on Channel 5 in the UK and aired from 28 June 2023 on Network 10 in Australia. The plot focuses on Alison Weston, whose husband Sean mysteriously disappears while surfing. Riptide stars Jo Joyner, Peter O'Brien, Ciarán Griffiths, David Berry, Ben Turland, and Asher Yasbincek. It was filmed in locations across the state of Victoria, including Melbourne and the Network 10 studios in Nunawading in August 2022.

<i>Neighbours</i> 30th Anniversary 2015 Neighbours storyline

The Neighbours 30th Anniversary was a series of celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of Australian television soap opera Neighbours. The celebrations span over two weeks, beginning on 4 March 2015 in Australia, while starting on 18 March in the United Kingdom. The anniversary features many storylines, but points around Paul Robinson's Erinsborough festival and the wedding of Daniel Robinson and Amber Turner. The serial's executive producer, Jason Herbison, began planning the 30th anniversary over a year in advance. Over ten former cast members from all eras of the show were invited back to "honour the past and present". Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan were also invited, but they both downturned the offer. The celebrations marked Ian Smith and Anne Charleston's returns to Neighbours as Harold and Madge Bishop respectively. Madge was last seen during her death in 2001 and returns as a ghost in Harold's mind, which Herbison was initially worried would not be accepted by Charleston nor Smith, however both approved of it. The storyline was also popular amongst viewers.

Asher Yasbincek is an Australian actress, known for her role as Harper McLean in the Netflix series Heartbreak High. Yasbincek made her television debut in the recurring role of Rose in serial drama The Heights. She then appeared in the comedy-drama film Rams (2020) and had a supporting role in How to Please a Woman (2022). Yasbincek secured her breakthrough role in Heartbreak High while she was working in traffic control. She shaved her head on-screen for the role in one of her first scenes. For her portrayal of Harper, Yasbincek received a nomination for the AACTA Audience Choice Award for Best Actress. She also stars in the four-part miniseries Riptide as Hannah Lane.

Benjamin Turland is an Australian actor and dancer. Turland won the grand final of the revived Young Talent Time series with his dance group Lil' Banditz Krew, before going onto the semi-final of Australia's Got Talent. He later appeared as a dancer on The X Factor Australia and The Voice Australia. In 2014, he made a guest appearance in the drama series Love Child and played Jordan Walsh in Home and Away during 2016. From 2019 until 2022, Turland portrayed Hendrix Greyson in fellow Australian soap opera Neighbours. He also appeared in the spin-off Erinsborough High, and was nominated for Best Daytime Star at the Inside Soap Awards. After leaving Neighbours, Turland appeared in the television miniseries Riptide as Ethan Weston. He filmed a role in the 2023 thriller 13 Summers and joined the supporting cast of Paper Dolls. The Casting Guild of Australia named Turland as one of its 12 Rising Stars of 2023.
