Riptide is a 2022 British-Australian psychological thriller television series created by Jason Herbison and directed by Scott Major. It was broadcast over four consecutive days from 27 December 2022 on Channel 5 in the UK and aired from 28 June 2023 on Network 10 in Australia. The plot focuses on Alison Weston, whose husband Sean mysteriously disappears while surfing. Riptide stars Jo Joyner, Peter O'Brien, Ciarán Griffiths, David Berry, Ben Turland, and Asher Yasbincek. It was filmed in locations across the state of Victoria, including Melbourne and the Network 10 studios in Nunawading in August 2022.

Plot

Alison has just married Australian Sean Weston. Both of their children struggle with the new family situation, and Alison's former husband wants her back. When Sean disappears during a morning surf, it is not clear if he got caught up in a rip tide or if there is more to his disappearance.

Cast

Production

The series was commissioned following the success of Lie With Me (2021). It is one of two drama commissions for Channel 5 made by Fremantle Australia in partnership with Australia's Network Ten. [1] Riptide was created by Jason Herbison, who is also producing the series alongside Natalie Mandel. [2] [3] Herbison commented: "I'm thrilled to continue the partnership with Channel 5 and 10 and to bring Riptide to life. It's the best of British meeting the best of Australian casts and crews – and I can't wait for the audience to see what we have in store." [1] The scripts have been by written by Herbison, Margaret Wilson, and Anthony Ellis. [4]

The cast were revealed on 14 July 2022. British actress Jo Joyner plays Alison Weston. She described Alison as "a warm and layered character whose world is turned upside down, just when it seemed like her life was finally coming together." [1] Peter O'Brien is Sean Weston, Alison's Australian husband. [5] Ciarán Griffiths plays Alison's former husband Michael Lane, and David Berry is the Weston's neighbour Dan Burrell. Ben Turland and Asher Yasbincek play Alison and Sean's children Ethan and Hannah respectively. [6] Other cast members include Ally Fowler as Sean's former wife Rachel Weston, Pia Miranda as Jenny Clarke, Yazeed Daher as Hannah's friend Logan Williams, Benjamin Samaddar as Jesse Patel, and Sonya Suares as Sergeant Bhomik. [1] Additional cast include Max Brown as Finn Baker, Patrick Harvey as Andrew White, Patrick Williams as Philip Eldersly, Emma Choy as Naomi Burrell, Toby Lang as Constable Lang, Ashley Stocco as Detective Abela, Adam McConvell as Detective Da Silva, Judy Beaumont as Sara, and Hannah Ogawa as Melody Ling. Riptide was directed by Scott Major. [3] Production on the four-part series began in early August 2022, [4] and concluded on 22 August. [8] It was filmed on-location across Victoria, including Melbourne, [3] Mount Eliza, and the Dandenong Ranges. [9] Some scenes were filmed at the Network 10 studios in Nunawading, previously used by the Australian soap opera Neighbours . [10] The series received funding from VicScreen. [11]

A promotional trailer for the show was released in November 2022. [12] Riptide was broadcast across four consecutive nights from 27 December 2022 in the UK. [3] It aired from 28 June 2023 on Network 10 in Australia. [9]

Reception

Ahead of the first episode being broadcast, Morgan Cormack of the Radio Times said the series had caught their attention and thought it "looks positively ominous" from the teaser trailer. [6] In her review of the series, Cormack's colleague Jane Rackham called it "intriguing" and stated: "Initially it has all the hallmarks of an upmarket version of Neighbours... until Sean disappears while out for his daily surf. The briefly glimpsed flashbacks suggest it maybe wasn't an accident." [7]

Emily Watkins of the i gave Riptide three out of five stars. In her mixed review, Watkins wrote "Certainly, there was no shortage of narrative meat to sink your teeth into. While Riptide sometimes seemed to have bitten off more than it could chew – at Sean's funeral, for instance, where all those antagonists collided – its well-paced writing and confident performances meant that any instances of overreaching were short-lived and easily forgiven." [13] Watkins thought the characters were mostly unlikeable, but praised O'Brien and Joyner's performances for giving the series "much needed depth." [13] She added that "the first episode of Riptide promised a lot. Let's hope the next three episodes can deliver." [13]

In a negative review, James Jackson from The Times gave the show two out of five stars and said "Jo Joyner does furrowed brow to perfection but this down under drama of sun, surf and suspense is no eye-catcher." [14] Jackson also likened the show to "a dark Neighbours special, and not in a particularly fun way." [14]

Neighbours storylines primarily centre on the residents of the street, which was named after Jack Ramsay, the grandfather of original character Max Ramsay. A blackjack game between Jack and Sam Robinson determined whose name the street would be named after. Only six houses on the street are featured on a regular basis; numbers 22 to 32. Alexandra "Ally" Fowler is an Australian actress and singer. She is known for her roles as Angela Hamilton in Sons and Daughters (1982–84) and Zoe Davis in Neighbours (1986); both series were produced by the Grundy Organisation, and in 1985, she was cast in another Grundy serial, Possession, just before that series was cancelled.

Neighbours is an Australian television soap opera, which has aired since 18 March 1985. It was created by television executive Reg Watson. The Seven Network commissioned the show following the success of Watson's earlier soap Sons and Daughters. Although successful in Melbourne, Neighbours underperformed in the Sydney market and was cancelled by Seven four months after it began airing. It was immediately commissioned by rival Network Ten for a second production season, which began screening on 20 January 1986. Neighbours became the longest-running drama series in Australian television history. In 2005, it was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame.

Scott Ian Major is an Australian actor and TV and film director, known for his roles as Peter Rivers in the 1994 television teen drama series Heartbreak High and Lucas Fitzgerald in soap opera Neighbours. After leaving Neighbours in 2013, Major returned to direct over 200 episodes of the serial. He has since gone on to direct episodes of Playing for Keeps, and two miniseries Lie With Me and Riptide. Major reprised his role as Rivers in the 2022 reboot of Heartbreak High.

Neighbours: Erinsborough High is an Australian streaming television series produced for video on demand and catch up TV services My5 and 10 Play. It was released on 11 November 2019. The series is a spin-off of soap opera Neighbours. Featuring new and regular characters from the main show, the series follows a group of students at Erinsborough High School as they prepare for their final exams, and focuses on the various issues they are facing, as well as the disappearance of one of the students.

<i>Neighbours</i>: The Finale Episode of Neighbours

"Neighbours: The Finale" comprises the 8901st, 8902nd and 8903rd episodes of the Australian television soap opera Neighbours. It premiered on 28 July 2022 on both Network 10 and 10 Peach in Australia, and on 29 July on Channel 5 in the United Kingdom. It was conceived as the end of the serial, after it was cancelled due to the loss of its UK broadcaster and failure to find an alternative buyer, and production ceased after it was filmed. The episodes were written by Shane Isheev and executive producer Jason Herbison, and directed by Scott Major. Production on Neighbours ended on 10 June. Production and cast had known the show was facing cancellation since 2021 and ideas for a suitable finale were already being planned at that point. In response to the news of the show's potential cancellation becoming public in early 2022, an online petition amassed more than 67,000 signatures to save the show. The petition did not change Channel 5's decision, who maintained that Neighbours remained popular and ending the show was solely a "business decision". Production were then tasked with bringing the show to an end within a few months. Herbison had already envisioned an ideal way to end the series, and Isheev and other writers supported his plans. Herbison did not wish to end the show with excessive finality, such as in the destruction of the primary location of Ramsay Street, and opted for a celebratory theme that acknowledged the show's history.

Hendrix Greyson is a fictional character from the Australian television soap opera Neighbours, played by Ben Turland. Turland's manager did not tell him that he was not what the producers were looking for when he submitted a self-tape. However, he received an audition a week later and was flown to Melbourne from Sydney for a chemistry read with members of the cast. Three days later, he was informed that he had been cast as Hendrix. He joined the main cast in his first ongoing television role. He made his first appearance during the episode broadcast on 13 September 2019. Hendrix was introduced as the estranged son of Pierce Greyson. His arrival led to further exploration of Pierce's backstory and established a new family unit in the serial.

Heat is a British-Australian action-thriller television series created by Jason Herbison and directed by Kate Kendall. It was broadcast over four consecutive days from 11 July 2023 on Channel 5 in the UK, and from 4 October 2023 on Network 10 in Australia. The plot focuses on two families as they take a joint vacation amidst the bushfire season. Heat stars Danny Dyer, Darren McMullen, Pia Miranda, and Jane Allsop. It was filmed in Melbourne and rural Victoria in November and December 2022.

Asher Yasbincek is an Australian actress, known for her role as Harper McLean in the Netflix series Heartbreak High. Yasbincek made her television debut in the recurring role of Rose in serial drama The Heights. She then appeared in the comedy-drama film Rams (2020) and had a supporting role in How to Please a Woman (2022). Yasbincek secured her breakthrough role in Heartbreak High while she was working in traffic control. She shaved her head on-screen for the role in one of her first scenes. For her portrayal of Harper, Yasbincek received a nomination for the AACTA Audience Choice Award for Best Actress. She also stars in the four-part miniseries Riptide as Hannah Lane.

Benjamin Turland is an Australian actor and dancer. Turland won the grand final of the revived Young Talent Time series with his dance group Lil' Banditz Krew, before going onto the semi-final of Australia's Got Talent. He later appeared as a dancer on The X Factor Australia and The Voice Australia. In 2014, he made a guest appearance in the drama series Love Child and played Jordan Walsh in Home and Away during 2016. From 2019 until 2022, Turland portrayed Hendrix Greyson in fellow Australian soap opera Neighbours. He also appeared in the spin-off Erinsborough High, and was nominated for Best Daytime Star at the Inside Soap Awards. After leaving Neighbours, Turland appeared in the television miniseries Riptide as Ethan Weston. He filmed a role in the 2023 thriller 13 Summers and joined the supporting cast of Paper Dolls. The Casting Guild of Australia named Turland as one of its 12 Rising Stars of 2023.
