Scott Morrison (born 1978) is a Canadian basketball coach who is currently an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Early life

Morrison was born and raised in Morell, Prince Edward Island, [1] and attended Morell Regional High School. [2] Growing up, his father George was the head coach of the UPEI Panthers men's basketball program. [1]

College career

From 1995 to 2000, Morrison attended the University of Prince Edward Island and played for the Panthers in the Canadian Inter-university Sport (CIS). [2] He graduated as the school's all-time leader in assists and 3-point field goals made and fifth on the all-time leading scorer list. [3] He also finished as the Atlantic University Sport's all-time leader for career three-pointers made (220 in 99 games), still holding the record as of the 2019–20 season. [4]

Coaching career

College coaching in Canada (2001–2013)

In 2001, after his first year of graduate studies at Dalhousie University, Morrison was appointed an assistant coach of Dalhousie's women's basketball team under head coach Carolyn Savoy. [1] In 2002, as a 24-year-old, [1] he was elevated to head coach of the team. [2]

In 2003, Morrison was appointed head coach of Lakehead University's men's basketball team. [1] [2] During his 10 years at Lakehead, [5] he led the Wolves to four straight CIS Final 8 appearances (2010–2013). He led the team to its first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship in 2011 and to the CIS championship in 2013. [6] Under his leadership, Lakehead went from the worst team in the nation in 2006 to a perennial top five program from 2008 to 2013. Notably, Morrison was named OUA Conference Coach of the Year in 2010. [7]

For the 2013–14 season, Morrison's assistant coach Matt Erdman served as the Wolves' interim coach while Morrison took a one-year sabbatical. [8]

Maine Red Claws (2013–2017)

Morrison spent the 2013–14 season with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA D-League as a volunteer player development coach. [3] [9]

On September 16, 2014, Morrison was appointed head coach of the Red Claws. [7] In the 2014–15 season, he led Maine to a franchise-best 35–15 record and was selected to helm the Eastern Conference Futures team in the 2015 NBA D-League All-Star Game. [6] He was subsequently named the NBA D-League Coach of the Year [3] [6] and coached the NBA D-League Select Team at the 2015 NBA Summer League. [10]

In January 2016, Morrison became the winningest coach in Red Claws franchise history. [11]

Boston Celtics (2017–2021)

In June 2017, Morrison was named an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics under head coach Brad Stevens. [12]

After four seasons as an assistant, Morrison interviewed for the Celtics head coaching job in 2021 but the position was given instead to Ime Udoka. Udoka subsequently did not keep Morrison on his staff. [13]

Perth Wildcats (2021–2022)

On August 24, 2021, Morrison was appointed head coach of the Perth Wildcats of Australia's National Basketball League, on a three-year contract. [9] [14] In the 2021–22 NBL season, the Wildcats had a 14–6 record before losing six of their last eight games to finish fifth and miss the playoffs for the first time since 1986. [15] [16] He parted ways with the Wildcats on June 23, 2022, due to family reasons. [17]

Salt Lake City Stars (2022–2023)

On October 12, 2022, Morrison was named head coach of the Salt Lake City Stars of the NBA G League. [18]

Utah Jazz (2023–present)

Morrison joined the Utah Jazz as an assistant coach for the 2023–24 NBA season. [19]

National team

Morrison was hired as an assistant coach for the Canada men's national under-19 basketball team in 2012. The team won a silver medal at the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 tournament, and placed sixth at the U19 World Championships in 2013 in Prague, both of which were all-time best finishes for Canada in this age group. [7]

Personal life

Morrison and his wife Susanne have two children. [17] [20] Their son has autism and is non-verbal. [19]

Scott Edward Roth is an American professional basketball coach and former player who is the head coach of the Tasmania JackJumpers of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL).

Paul Andrew Rogers is an Australian basketball coach and former player. After playing college basketball in the United States for Gonzaga, he was drafted in the 1997 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers but never played an NBA game. He played 12 seasons in the Australian National Basketball League (NBL). In 2000, he was named NBL Most Valuable Player and helped the Perth Wildcats win the NBL championship. He won his second NBL championship, also with the Wildcats, in 2010.

Scott Ninnis is an Australian professional basketball coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of the Adelaide Lightning of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). He won three National Basketball League (NBL) championships during his career: 1986 and 1998 with the Adelaide 36ers and 1992 with the South East Melbourne Magic. He coached the 36ers for two years and was an assistant coach with the club when they won the 1998–99 and 2001–02 NBL championships. He returned to the 36ers' coaching staff in 2023 as an assistant and was appointed as interim head coach midway through the 2023–24 season. Despite re-signing with the 36ers to be head coach, he was sacked in August 2024.

Fraser Ross McMains is an American-born New Zealand basketball coach. He is currently a player development coach with the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The 2019–20 NBL season was the 42nd season of the National Basketball League since its establishment in 1979. The Perth Wildcats became champions. They drew an average home attendance of 12,974, the highest in the 2019–20 NBL season.

Mike Kelly is an American-Australian professional basketball coach and former player who is currently the head coach of the Otago Nuggets of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL). He played college basketball for Orange Coast College and Westmont College before playing professionally in Australia. He played 13 seasons in the National Basketball League (NBL) between 1993 and 2006, winning an NBL championship with the South East Melbourne Magic in 1996 while earning grand final MVP honours. In 1997 and 1998, he earned back-to-back NBL Best Defensive Player selection. He moved into coaching after retiring as a player, where he served as a college assistant for seven years before returning to the NBL in 2013. He was appointed head coach of the South East Melbourne Phoenix in 2023 but left in October 2024 after starting the 2024–25 NBL season with a 0–5 record.

Will Weaver is an American professional basketball coach who is an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He previously was as an assistant coach for the Australian national basketball team.

The 2022–23 NBL season was the 45th season of the National Basketball League since its establishment in 1979. A total of ten teams contested in the 2022–23 season.

Adam Forde is an Australian professional basketball coach who is the head coach of the Cairns Taipans of the National Basketball League (NBL). Between 2013 and 2019, Forde was an assistant coach with the Perth Wildcats and won four NBL championships. After a season as an assistant coach with the Sydney Kings in 2019–20, he served as their head coach during the 2020–21 season. He was appointed head coach of the Taipans in 2021, and in 2023 he was named the NBL Coach of the Year.
