Sekar Ayu Asmara is an Indonesian songwriter, director, and author.

Biography

Asmara was born in Jakarta [1] to a diplomat and his wife. She accompanied her father to foreign countries when he received an assignment. While overseas with her family, she attended several colleges. [2]

She first worked in advertising, but in the 1980s Asmara began writing songs, with her first released song being "Susie Bhelel", sung by Fariz RM for his 1989 album Fashionova. [2]

She entered filmmaking by producing commercials and the music video for KLa Project's "Tak Bisa Ke Lain Hati". Although she wanted to make a featured length film, she feared that the Suharto-era government would censor any film she made. As such, her initial scripts went unfilmed. [2]

She rose to prominence with the release of her directorial debut, Biola Tak Berdawai (The Stringless Violin), in 2003. She also wrote the script and assisted in the production of the film. [2]

Style

In contrast to the increasingly frank depiction of sexuality by female writers such as Ayu Utami after the fall of the New Order, Asmara's works take a more conservative view. Tineke Hellwig of the University of British Columbia, Biola Tak Berdawai is anti-feminist to the point of being misogynistic. Her female characters are often pregnant or have undergone an abortion; several also have cancer of the reproductive organs. According to Hellwig, the traditional view of women being loving mothers is idealized in Asmara's works, but rarely shown. [3]

Personal life

Asmara is a fan of musicals, and has noted that she has already written one that she hopes to make if there is enough money; she has already written the songs for it. She also likes the Hindu epic Mahabharata . She has stated that she writes about things that "other people are not producing". [2]

Awards and recognition

Asmara received the Best New Director award at the 2003 Cairo International Film Festival for Biola Tak Berdawai. [4]

Sastra wangi

Sastra wangi is a label given to a new body of Indonesian literature written by young, urban Indonesian women who take on controversial issues such as politics, religion and sexuality. Initiating the movement was writer Ayu Utami's best-selling first novel, Saman (1998), a contemporary view of Indonesian society published two weeks before the downfall of President Suharto. Large numbers of similar works by young women have followed.

Chitra Dewi

Rara Patma Dewi Tjitrohadiseikusumo, best known under her stage name Chitra Dewi, was an Indonesian film actress and director. She was noted for her roles in Usmar Ismail's films of the 1950s, appearing in films such as Tamu Agung, Tiga Dara, and Pedjuang, although she remained active in cinema until 1993 and won a Citra Award for Best Supporting Actress at the 1979 Indonesian Film Festival for Gara-gara Isteri Muda. Dewi also had a brief stint film directing in 1971, making her one of only four Indonesian women to direct a film before 1998.

Rima Melati Indonesian actress (born 1938)

Marjolein Tambayong, better known by her stage name Rima Melati, is an Indonesian actress and singer. Born in Tondano, Sulawesi, by the 1950s she had moved to Jakarta and become a model. After joining the girl group The Baby Dolls and taking a minor acting role, in 1961 Melati starred in her first film, Kasih Tak Sampai. Since then she has appeared in almost a hundred feature films, including works by Wim Umboh, Sjumandjaja, and Teguh Karya. For this oeuvre she has received multiple awards, including a PWI Award for Best Actress for Noda Tak Berampun, a Citra Award for Best Leading Actress for Intan Berduri, and five nominations for the Citra Award for Best Supporting Actress.
