Conus genus of molluscs

Conus is a genus of predatory sea snails, or cone snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Conidae. Prior to 2009, cone snail species had all traditionally been grouped into the single genus Conus. However, Conus is now more precisely defined, and there are several other accepted genera of cone snails. For a list of the currently accepted genera, see Conidae.

These are sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Conidae, the cone snails and their allies. [1]

Sea snail common name for snails that normally live in saltwater

Sea snail is a common name for snails that normally live in saltwater, in other words marine gastropods. The taxonomic class Gastropoda also includes snails that live in other habitats, such as land snails and freshwater snails. Many species of sea snails are edible and exploited as food sources by humans.

Family is one of the eight major hierarcical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy; it is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies, which are intermediate ranks between the ranks of family and genus. The official family names are Latin in origin; however, popular names are often used: for example, walnut trees and hickory trees belong to the family Juglandaceae, but that family is commonly referred to as being the "walnut family".

Conidae family of molluscs

Conidae, with the current common name of "cone snails," is a taxonomic family of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the superfamily Conoidea.

Species which at one point were listed in the genus Seminoleconus have been placed in the genus Tenorioconus , including Seminoleconus cedonulli (Linnaeus, 1767), Seminoleconus mappa (Lightfoot, 1786), Seminoleconus aurantius (Hwass, 1792), Seminoleconus curassaviensis (Hwass, 1792), Seminoleconus archon (Broderip, 1833), Seminoleconus scopulorum Van Mol, Tursch & Kempf, 1971, Seminoleconus pseudaurantius Vink & Cosel, 1985, Seminoleconus harlandi Petuch, 1987, Seminoleconus duffyi Petuch, 1992, and Seminoleconus julieandreae Cargile, 1995. All these have become synonyms.

Tenorioconus is a synonym of Conus (Stephanoconus)Mörch, 1852,: synonym of ConusLinnaeus, 1758. These are sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Conidae, the cone snails and their allies.

Several species of fossil cone shells have been named in the genus, including Seminoleconus violetae Petuch 1988, Seminoleconus trippae Petuch 1991, and Seminoleconus diegelae Petuch 1994.
