Biography
According to pious legend, he was born in Greece; [3] quit his life there and decided to live a celibate life of penance and prayer; emigrated to Sirmium, Pannonia in the Roman Empire (presently Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia); purchased, cultivated, and lived off of a garden there; and was known for his horticultural skill. He rebuked the wife of a Roman imperial guard for walking in his garden with her daughters, this purportedly being contrary to the mores of the time without male accompaniment. Her pride wounded, the wife informed her husband of the affair in writing, and he reported Serenus to Emperor Maximian, who gave the husband a letter to deliver to the governor of Pannonia that permitted the governor to remedy the supposed injustice. On the testimony of Serenus to the governor, the husband retracted his accusation and the governor judged Serenus innocent of insulting the wife. However, the governor suspected from the words of Serenus' testimony that he might be a Christian, and inquired of his religion. When Serenus testified to being one and refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods, the governor had him decapitated on 23 February 307. [1] [2]
Parts of this narrative are probably fictitious; [4] however, according to Butler there may possibly be some historical basis to the story. [5]
A tradition centered in Clermont-Ferrand, France maintains that Austremonius sent Serenus to evangelize Thiers, also in Auvergne. [6]
Clotilde, also known as Clothilde, Clotilda, Clotild, Rotilde etc., was a Queen of All the Franks. She was supposedly descended from the Gothic king Athanaric and became the second wife of the Frankish king Clovis I in 493. The Merovingian dynasty to which her husband belonged ruled Frankish kingdoms for over 200 years (450–758).
Stremonius or Saint Austremonius or Saint Stramonius or Austromoine, the "apostle of Auvergne," was the first Bishop of Clermont. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.
Saint Bibiana is a Roman Virgin martyr. The earliest mention in an authentic historical authority occurs in the Liber Pontificalis, where the biography of Pope Simplicius (468–483) states that this pope "consecrated a basilica of the holy martyr Bibiana, which contained her body, near the 'palatium Licinianum'". The Basilica of Santa Bibiana is dedicated to her.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Clermont is an archdiocese of the Latin Church of the Roman Catholic Church in France. The diocese comprises the department of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Region of Auvergne. The Archbishop's seat is Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral. Throughout its history Clermont was the senior suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bourges. It became a metropolitan see itself, however, in 2002. The current archbishop is François Kalist.
Saint Gal of Clermont was the sixteenth Bishop of Clermont, holding that see from 527 to 551. He shares a name with a later bishop of the diocese, who, though less illustrious than the first Gal, is also revered as a saint. Gal played an important role in the politics of the Church, as the Council of Clermont (535) was hosted under his episcopate. He was the uncle and teacher of Gregory of Tours.
Genesius, Count of Clermont was a noble of Gaul and reputed miracle worker. He was said to be Count of Auvergne. His residence was at Combronde.
Saint Bonitus (623–710) was born in France and held a number of important positions including being appointed governor of Marseilles in 667 and Bishop of Auvergne. He was also chancellor and referendary in Francia. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church as well as the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Saint Julian of Brioude (†304) was a legendary martyr and saint from the Auvergne region of France. Although the main focus of his cultus was in the small village of Brioude, he was originally from the city of Vienne, and also associated with Clermont. He was most famous through his association with an aristocratic family of bishops of the time, his most notable proponents being St. Gallus of Clermont and St. Gregory of Tours. Gregory wrote a vita of Julian, but his attempts to expand the saint's cult from the Auvergne to Touraine and Aquitaine were unsuccessful, and Julian is now only remembered through his basilica in the town of Brioude itself.

Lomer, also known as Laumer, Laudomarus, Launomar, or Launomaro, is a Christian saint whose feast day is January 19. He founded an abbey at Corbion near Chartres in present-day France. The vita of Saint Lomer reveals that, as a youth, Lomer was a shepard, before being accepted into the monastery of St. Mesmin, near Orleans, and would eventually become a priest in Chartres. The vita also states that Lomer lived to be more than one hundred years old. One known copy of this vita was begun by Orderic Vitalis while he was copyist at the library of Saint-Évroul.
Saint Meneleus was a French monk who founded the Menat Abbey.
Saint Rusticus of Clermont was a Bishop of Clermont in Auvergne. His feast day is 24 September.
Saints Plutarch, Serenus, Heraclides, Heron, Serenus, Rhais, Potamiœna and Marcella were Christian martyrs in Egypt under the persecution of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus. Their feast day is 28 June.
