Sergio Palleroni is an American architect and academic. He is a professor and fellow at Portland State University. He directs the Center for Public Interest Design (CPID). [1] He received National Education Awards from the AIA, the NCARB, and the USGBC, and was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame.[ citation needed ]
Palleroni was educated at the University of Oregon, where he received his Bachelors in Architecture, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned his Masters of Science in History, Theory, and Criticism.
After obtaining his degree, Palleroni spent ten years working in Nicaragua, Mexico, and North Africa on projects sponsored by the United Nations and the World Bank. He then returned to the United States to teach at the University of Washington.
In 1986, he began a series of collaborations with Carlos Mijares Bracho and Gabriela Videla that established the term "public interest design". In 1987, Palleroni and Vidella founded ADE (Accion y Dessarollo Ecologico), an NGO that grew out of the practices of Paolo Freire and Ivan Illych, with whom they collaborated through their outreach organization, CED. The NGO was reconstituted as Comunidad AC in 1997 to allow it to fundraise for social interest projects in the region, many of which were constructed via international collaborations. These collaborations began in 1988 through University of Oregon. Fieldwork studios were formalized as an independent organization in 1995, as the BASIC Initiative (a service-learning program) while Palleroni was an associate professor at the University of Washington College of Built Environments. The outreach organization was founded in collaboration with David Riley, who, as of December 2023, runs the nonprofit Indigenized Energy Initiative based in Berkeley, California. [2]
In 2004, Palleroni was invited by Professor Steven Moore and the Center for Sustainable Practices at the University of Texas to establish a fieldwork program. His work at UT, supported by a Luce Foundation grant, led to the creation of the Alley Flat Initiative.
In the fall of 2008, Palleroni accepted a position as a professor and senior fellow of the Institute for Sustainable Solutions at Portland State University. A new Center for Public Interest Design (CPID) [1] was founded in March 2013, promoting public interest design. In 2014, the first graduate degree in Public Interest Design was approved by the Faculty Senate of Portland State University. [3] The center supports a staff of five full-time faculty members, 21 graduate students, and fourteen international interns for eleven initiatives. [4]
Michael Graves was an American architect, designer, and educator, and principal of Michael Graves and Associates and Michael Graves Design Group. He was a member of The New York Five and the Memphis Group and a professor of architecture at Princeton University for nearly forty years. Following his own partial paralysis in 2003, Graves became an internationally recognized advocate of health care design.
Portland State University (PSU) is a public research university in Portland, Oregon. It was founded in 1946 as a post-secondary educational institution for World War II veterans. It evolved into a four-year college over the following two decades and was granted university status in 1969. It is one of two public universities in Oregon that are located in a large city. It is governed by a board of trustees. PSU is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
Oregon State University (OSU) is a public land-grant research university based in Corvallis, Oregon. OSU offers more than 200 undergraduate-degree programs along with a variety of graduate and doctoral degrees. It has the seventh-largest engineering college in the nation for 2023. Undergraduate enrollment for all colleges combined averages over 32,000 while an additional 5,000 students are engaged in post-graduate coursework through the university. In 2023, over 37,000 students were enrolled at OSU – making it the largest university in the state. Out-of-state students typically make up over one-quarter of the student body. AIA offers education, government advocacy, community redevelopment, and public outreach programs, and collaborates with other stakeholders in the design and construction industries.

The World Forestry Center is a nonprofit educational institution in Portland in the U.S. state of Oregon. Located near the Oregon Zoo in Washington Park, the organization was established in 1964 as the Western Forestry Center, with the actual building opening in 1971.
Henry Lewis Pittock was an English-born American pioneer, publisher, newspaper editor, and wood and paper magnate. He was active in Republican politics and Portland, Oregon civic affairs, a Freemason and an avid outdoorsman and adventurer. He is frequently referred to as the founder of The Oregonian, although it was an existing weekly before he reestablished it as the state's preeminent daily newspaper.
Brad Cloepfil is an American architect, educator and principal of Allied Works Architecture of Portland, Oregon and New York City. His first major project was an adaptive reuse of a Portland warehouse for the advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy. Since 2000, Cloepfil and Allied Works have completed cultural, commercial and residential projects including the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Dutchess County Residence Guest House and the Museum of Arts and Design. Recent and notable works include the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, Colorado, completed in November 2011; the National Music Centre of Canada in Calgary, Alberta, which opened in July 2016; and the Providence Park expansion in Portland, Oregon, completed in 2019.
Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) is an art museum located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. The original building was designed by Ellis F. Lawrence as part of his "main university quadrangle," now known as the Memorial Quadrangle. Its first Director, Asian art collector, and female museum specialist Gertrude Bass Warner, also influenced the building's design, particularly its innovative climate control measures. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

Floyd Archibald Naramore was an American architect. He is most notable for his work on schools, serving as Architect and Superintendent of properties for Portland Public Schools and as Architect of Seattle Public Schools. He was also a founder of the firm that is now known as NBBJ.
Chester Lloyd "Chet" Orloff is a historian, writer and professor in Portland, Oregon, called "one of [Oregon's] favorite history teachers" by The Oregonian.
The Earth Awards is an aspirational platform for consumer-driven ideas that challenge designers and innovators to build a new economy. Public interest design is a human-centered and participatory design practice that places emphasis on the “triple bottom line” of sustainable design that includes ecological, economic, and social issues and on designing products, structures, and systems that address issues such as economic development and the preservation of the environment. Projects incorporating public interest design focus on the general good of the local citizens with a fundamentally collaborative perspective.

Emily Ginsburg is a conceptual artist who lives in Portland, Oregon. She was selected for the Portland2016 Biennial by curator Michelle Grabner. And her work was noted as a highlight of the Oregon Biennial in 2006. Jennifer Gately, the curator of that Biennial, noted that Ginsburg's work, "reveals a deep interest in the signs and symbols of communication, scientific illustration, architectural notation, electronics, and the human nervous system." Ginsburg's "work often functions as a map or code for understanding an aspect of an individual or collective consciousness."

He is a journalist and editor-at-large for The Post Millennial, a Canadian conservative news website, and a regular guest on Fox News.
