It is situated on the Ligurian Sea four miles to the west of the city, between Pegli [1] and Cornigliano. Its population is currently about 50,000, but in the 1970s it was as high as 80,000.
The name is derived from the Latin Sextum, a small village that was likely founded in the second century A.D., where stones were assembled for the Roman road that left from Genoa. No physical records exist about the population of Sestri before the fifteenth century.
Around 1911, the town had iron-works saw-mills, shipbuilding yards and tanneries and factories for macaroni, matches and tobacco. [1]
The links to the transport sector continue to this day; Sestri Ponente is home to Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport. Another major source of employment are the shipyards, part of the Fincantieri. [2] They are currently enjoying the benefits of the current ship construction boom after the blows felt from the 1970s to the 1990s.
The Italian Riviera or Ligurian Riviera is the narrow coastal strip in Italy which lies between the Ligurian Sea and the mountain chain formed by the Maritime Alps and the Apennines. Longitudinally it extends from the border with France and the French Riviera near Ventimiglia eastwards to Capo Corvo which marks the eastern end of the Gulf of La Spezia and is close to the regional border between Liguria and Tuscany. The Italian Riviera thus includes nearly all of the coastline of Liguria. Historically the "Riviera" extended further to the west, through what is now French territory as far as Marseille.

Already the largest shipbuilder in Europe, after the acquisition of Vard in 2013, Fincantieri group doubled in size to become the fourth largest in the world (2014). The company builds both commercial and military vessels.
Genoa Airport also named Christopher Columbus Airport, and commonly named Aeroporto di Genova-Sestri Ponente, after the city district where it is located) is an international airport built on an artificial peninsula, 4 NM west of Genoa, Italy.
Sestri Levante is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Genoa, Liguria, Italy. Lying on the Mediterranean Sea, it is approximately 56 km south of Genoa and is set on a promontory. While nearby Portofino and the Cinque Terre are probably the best-known tourist destinations on the Italian Riviera, Sestri Levante is becoming quite a favorite among Italians. This once quiet fishing village is slowly turning into a tourist hotspot, developing an old and a new town.
The Freccia-class destroyer was a class of destroyers built for the Regia Marina in the 1930s. Four modified ships were built and delivered in 1933 for Greece.
Costa Concordia was a cruise ship operated by Costa Crociere. She was the first of her class, followed by sister ships Costa Serena, Costa Pacifica, Costa Favolosa and Costa Fascinosa, and Carnival Splendor built for Carnival Cruise Line. When the 114,137-ton Costa Concordia and her sister ships entered service, they were among the largest ships built in Italy until the construction of the 130,000 GT Dream-class cruise ships.
Costa Serena is a Concordia-class cruise ship for the Italian cruise line, Costa Crociere. The name Serena was intended to symbolize harmony and serenity.
Silversea Cruises is a luxury cruise line headquartered in Monaco. Founded in 1994 by the Vlasov Group of Monaco and the Lefebvre family of Rome it pioneered all-inclusive cruising with its first ship, Silver Cloud. Since July 2020, it has been owned by Royal Caribbean Group.
MS Costa Luminosa is a cruise ship, owned and operated by Costa Crociere. Costa Luminosa entered service on 5 May 2009. The ship's design is a hybrid, using elements of Spirit-class and Vista-class cruise ships. A sister ship, Costa Deliziosa, was launched in February 2010 and is based on the same design. Costa Luminosa departed Civitavecchia, Italy on 3 June 2009, on her 13-night maiden voyage, with ports of call in Savona, St. Tropez, Barcelona, Lisbon, Le Havre and Amsterdam.
Costa Pacifica is a Concordia-class cruise ship for Costa Crociere. She was handed over to Costa Crociere on 29 May 2009. Her sister ships, Costa Concordia and Costa Serena, were launched in 2006 and in 2007, with Costa Favolosa and Costa Fascinosa launched in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
The Giuseppe Garibaldi-class cruisers were a class of ten armoured cruisers built in Italy in the 1890s and the first decade of the 20th century. The ships were built for both the Royal Italian Navy and for export. With the class being named for Italian unifier and nationalist Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Kydon Palace is a Greek Ro-Pax high speed ferry, built in 2001 at the Sestri Ponente shipyards by Fincantieri as the Festos Palace and owned by Minoan Lines. She is a sister ship of MS Knossos Palace (2000) . She was named by Kydon the mythical founder of the ancient Kydonia, an ancient city of Crete in present-day Chania. She can reach speeds up to 30 knots. The ship's facilities include restaurants, bars and cabins.
The Orione class was a class of four sea-going steam-powered torpedo boats of the Italian Regia Marina built by the Odero shipyard of Sestri Ponente from 1905 to 1907. They served in the Italo-Turkish War and the First World War.
Seven Seas Explorer is an Explorer-class cruise ship currently operated by Regent Seven Seas Cruises, a subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. Debuting in 2016, she became the first new-build ship for Regent in more than a decade and the largest ship to ever operate for Regent.
MV Seabourn Ovation is a cruise ship owned by Seabourn Cruise Line. The ship was ordered at Fincantieri in December 2014. The construction started on 7 June 2016. The keel was laid on 2 December 2016 in Sestri Ponente (Genoa). Sister ship of MV Seabourn Encore.
The term Great Genoa refers to the present area of the municipality of Genoa, in the north west of Italy. Great Genoa extends for over 30 km along the coast of Ligurian Sea from Nervi to Voltri, and up the Polcevera valley of the Polcevera river and the Bisagno river valley of the Bisagno river.
Scarlet Lady is a cruise ship operated by Virgin Voyages. She is the inaugural ship for the cruise line and was delivered on 14 February 2020 by Fincantieri of Italy. She was initially set to debut on April 1, 2020. She will operate exclusively as an "adults-only" ship for guests aged 18 and over, sailing mainly four- to five-night Caribbean itineraries from Miami, Florida.
Valiant Lady is a cruise ship under construction at Fincantieri's shipyard in Sestri Ponente for Virgin Voyages. Scheduled to debut in March 2022 as Virgin's second ship, she will become the sister ship to Scarlet Lady and also operate exclusively as an "adults-only" ship.
