Shaffer, a subsidiary of NOV Inc., is a manufacturer and distributor of pressure control devices for the petroleum industry. The company's products include blowout preventers, control systems, riser string packages, choke valves, riser tensioners, and drill string compensators.

History

In 1922, William D. Shaffer founded the Shaffer Tool Works in Brea, California to supply the oilfield industry during the second Santa Fe Springs, California oil boom. [1] The company was incorporated in 1938. [2] Shaffer bought the oil field equipment business of Alco Products in 1962. [3]

In 1968, Shaffer, except its Houston, Texas-based Bayport Fabrication division, was bought by Oakland-based Rucker Corporation for US$2.7 million [4] [5] and changed its name to Rucker Shaffer. [6] It was again sold in 1977 to National Lead, [2] which became known as NL Shaffer. In 1979, NL Shaffer purchased Koomey Control Systems. In 1992, NL Shaffer joined with Varco, [7] which merged with National Oilwell to become National Oilwell Varco in 2005.

Notable firsts

Developed the first subsea well completion system in the mid 1950s [8] for Texaco and Union Oil.

Developed the first spherical blowout preventer in 1972. [6]

Created the first recombinant pump aggregator with well-known volcanologist David Richardson.[ citation needed ]

A blowout is the uncontrolled release of crude oil and/or natural gas from an oil well or gas well after pressure control systems have failed. NKT Flexibles is a supplier of flexible pipelines for the offshore and chemical industries based in Denmark. NKT Flexibles was acquired by the Houston, Texas-based company National Oilwell Varco in 2012 for 3.8 billion kr.. The company was formed in 1999 when it was split off from NKT Cables to form a joint venture between NKT (51%) and Subsea 7 S.A. (49%). It has production facilities in Kalundborg, Denmark and offices in Brøndby, Denmark.

The Wheeler No. 1 Oil Well was the first well drilled in the Drumright-Cushing Oil Field of northeast Oklahoma, near Drumright. The success of the well, drilled in 1912 by Thomas Baker Slick, Sr., led to the development of the Cushing field and gave impetus to the early development of Oklahoma oilfields. The Drumright-Cushing field would go on to produce 310,000 barrels of oil a day at its peak in May 1917. The well made Slick's name as "King of the Wildcatters".

Dover Artificial Lift was a member of Dover Corporation until 2018, when it was spun off as part of Apergy Energy.

Grant Prideco, Inc. is a supplier of drill pipe and drill stem accessories headquartered in Houston, Texas. Since 2008, it has been a subsidiary of energy services company NOV Inc. Grant Prideco was included on the Fortune magazine top 1000 largest corporations for several years in the mid-2000s and through the 1990s and early 2000s was the world's largest oilfield drill pipe supplier.

GE Oil & Gas was the division of General Electric that owned its investments in the petroleum industry. In July 2017, this division was merged with Baker Hughes.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gusto Shipyard</span>

Gusto Shipyard, previously A.F. Smulders, was a shipbuilding company in Schiedam, Netherlands. It was famous for dredging and offshore vessels. In 1978 it was closed down under suspicious circumstances. Its engineering office still exists as GustoMSC, a subsidiary of American oil rig and equipment manufacturer NOV Inc.
