Shahed Nuruddin is a former Justice of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. He was the trial judge in the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack case. [1]
Nuruddin on 1 February 1960. [2] He did his Bachelor of Law and Master of Laws from the University of Dhaka. [2]
Nuruddin joined the judicial branch of the Bangladesh Civil Service on 20 April 1983 as a Munsif. [2]
On 27 February 2000, Nuruddin was promoted to District and Sessions Judge. [2]
On 10 October 2018, Nuruddin, as Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1, issued the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack case. [3] The case had accused 49 persons in total. [4] [5] It ruled the grenade attack "was a well-orchestrated plan, executed through abuse of state power". [5] Nuruddin said, "The specialised deadly Arges grenades that are used in wars were blasted at the Awami League's central office on 23 Bangabandhu Avenue in broad daylight with the help of the then state machinery". [5] On charges of killing through common intention, planning and criminal conspiracy, 38 persons were found guilty. [6] 19 of them were sentenced to death, including former Minister of Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, Member of Parliament Abdus Salam Pintu, General Rezzakul Haider Chowdhury, and General Abdur Rahim. [6] [7] The verdict also sentenced 19 to life imprisonment including Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and acting chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, former secretary to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Harris Chowdhury, and member of parliament, Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad. Nuruddin was appointed an additional judge of the High Court Division on 21 October 2019. [2] [8]
In December 2020, Nuruddin and Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan ordered the government to protect monuments of President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. [9]
In June 2022, Nuruddin and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim suspended a verdict of the Nilphamari District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal that acquitted a member of Border Guards Bangladesh after the 15 year old victim made a surprise appearance before the bench without lawyers and sought justice from the bench. [10] [11] Nuruddin and Justice Jahangir Hossain granted permanent bail to former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in a 2014 case on hurting religious sentiments and 2017 case for making derogatory comments on former President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. [12] On 3 October 2022, Nuruddin and Justice M Akram Hossain Chowdhury granted bail to a leader of Rajbari District unit of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Mohila Dal in a defamation case for making derogatory comments about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In May 2023, Nuruddin and Justice S. M. Kuddus Zaman denied bail to former Deputy Inspector General of Bangladesh Police, Md Mizanur Rahman, in a corruption case. [14] [15]
Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government, all the convicts in the 2004 grenade attack case were declared innonent and the Supreme Judicial Council initiaited an investigation against Nuruddin. [16] [17] He resigned in January 2025. [16]
Politics of Bangladesh takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Bangladesh is the head of government and of a multi-party system. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a major political party in Bangladesh. Founded on 1 September 1978 by Bangladeshi president Ziaur Rahman with a view of uniting people with a nationalist ideology, BNP later became one of the two dominant parties in Bangladesh, along with its archrival Awami League. Initially a big tent centrist party, it later moved towards more right-wing politics.
Begum Khaleda Zia is a Bangladeshi politician, who served as the prime minister of Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006. She was the first female prime minister of Bangladesh and second female prime minister in the Muslim world, after Benazir Bhutto. She is the widow of one of the former president of Bangladesh, Ziaur Rahman. She is the chairperson and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since 1984, which was founded by her husband in 1978.
Tarique Rahman, also known as Tarique Zia, is a Bangladeshi politician and businessman, who is the acting chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since February 2018. He is the eldest son of Ziaur Rahman, former Bangladeshi president, and first female prime minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia. He is also the publisher of The Daily Dinkal newspaper. He is widely seen as an influential figure in BNP and held several high-profile positions within the party, including the post of senior vice chairman.
Hawa Bhaban, also rendered as Hawa Bhavan, or Hawa Bhawan, is the political office of the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and monitors party affairs on the chair's behalf. It was viewed as an "alternate power house" in Bangladesh when BNP was in power from 2001 to 2006. It became controversial during the 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis when the party joint secretary was Tarique Rahman, son and heir apparent of the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Khaleda Zia. Some government officials maintained regular contact with viya (Tareq) to manipulate administrative matters such as promotion, posting, appointment etc. in different ministries and divisions. This resulted in a parallel government being administered from Hawa Bhaban.
The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack.
Lutfozzaman Babar is a Bangladeshi politician, who served as the State Minister of Home Affairs in the Khaleda Zia Cabinet from 2001 to 2006, as a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Nazmul Huda was a Bangladeshi barrister and politician. He served as the minister of information (1991–1996) and the minister of communications (2001–2006) of the government of Bangladesh. He was a four-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Dhaka-1 constituency. He was a member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party since its inception until 2012 when he left the party as its vice chairman.
