Shakuntala Bharne is an Indian vocalist, writer, poet and announcer at All India Radio. [1] [2] She is a writer and activist of the Konkani language agitation. [3]

Career

She trained in music under the guidance of Gangubai Hangal, in Hubli. She has done a double graduation. She has written two books on music - Swaranand and Naadbrahm, for which she received Goa Konkani Akademi and Konkani Bhasha Mandal award. She also wrote the biography of Pt. Prabhakar Karekar. [4] She released an album called Goph at Swaranjali, a tribute concert to Gangubai Hangal. [5] She was one of the poets at Uttējana, a poetry recital in Konkani, in 2014. [6] In 2016, she performed at Vasant Bahar - Konkani Geetancho Haar, a Konkani musical programme. [7] In 2017, she performed at Ghumttachem Fest, in Socorro, Goa. [8] She was also part of the Multilingual Poetry Convention organised in Dadar, Mumbai, by Sahitya Akademi. [9] She hosted the Swarasamrani Girijatai Kelkar music festival in 2018. Konkani language Indo-Aryan language spoken in India

Konkani is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by the Konkani people, primarily along the western coastal region (Konkan) of India. It is one of the 22 Scheduled languages mentioned in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution and the official language of the Indian state of Goa. The first Konkani inscription is dated 1187 A.D. Ravindra Kelekar

Ravindra Kelekar was a noted Indian author who wrote primarily in the Konkani language, though he also wrote in Marathi and Hindi. A Gandhian activist, freedom fighter and a pioneer in the modern Konkani movement, he is a well known Konkani scholar, linguist, and creative thinker. Kelkar was a participant in the Indian freedom movement, Goa's liberation movement, and later the campaign against the merger of the newly formed Goa with Maharashtra. He played a key role in the founding of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal, which lead the literary campaign for the recognition of Konkani as a full-fledged language, and its reinstatement as the state language of Goa. He authored nearly 100 books in the Konkani language, including Amchi Bhas Konkaneech, Shalent Konkani Kityak, Bahu-bhashik Bharatant Bhashenche Samajshastra and Himalayant, and also edited Jaag magazine for more than two decades.

The 1967 Goa status referendum was a referendum held in newly annexed Union Territory of Goa and Damaon in India, on 16 January 1967, to deal with the Konkani language agitation and to decide the future of Goa. Although popularly called an opinion poll, it was in fact a referendum, as the results of the poll were binding on the government of India. The referendum offered the people of Goa a choice between continuing as a union territory or merging with the state of Maharashtra. It is the only referendum to have been held in independent India. The people of Goa voted against the merger and Goa continued to be a union territory. Subsequently, in 1987, Goa became a full-fledged state within the Indian Union.

Uday Bhembre

Uday Bhembre is an Indian lawyer, Konkani writer and a former member of the Goa Legislative Assembly. He is noted for his role as the editor of the Konkani daily, Sunaparant, and as a Konkani language activist. Bhembre is also widely known as the lyricist of the famed Goan Konkani language song Channeache Rati.

Dr. Manohar Rai Sardesai was a Konkani poet, writer and French translator from Goa, India. He received his Doctorat ès lettres françaises for his thesis "L'image de l'Inde en France" from the University of Sorbonne. He has been credited for an upsurge of modern Konkani poetry. Sardesai died in 2006.

Damodar Mauzo

Damodar Mauzo is a Goan short story writer, novelist, critic and script writer in Konkani. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for the novel Karmelin and the Vimala V. Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar award for his novel Tsunami Simon in 2011. His collection of Short stories Teresa's Man and Other Stories from Goa was nominated for the Frank O'Connor International award in 2015. He has served as a member of the executive board, general council, as well as the finance committee of the Sahitya Akademi.

Goa State in India

Goa is a state on the southwestern coast of India within the region known as the Konkan, and geographically separated from the Deccan highlands by the Western Ghats. It is surrounded by the Indian states of Maharashtra to the north and Karnataka to the east and south, with the Arabian Sea forming its western coast. It is India's smallest state by area and its fourth-smallest by population. Goa has the highest GDP per capita among all Indian states, two and a half times as high as the GDP per capita of the country as a whole. Sudesh Lotlikar is an Indian Marathi and Konkani poet and producer/director of documentary films from Goa.

Goa is currently India's smallest state on the west coast, and its writers have written in many diverse languages. Poetry is a small and scattered field in the region, and this page makes an attempt to acknowledge those who have contributed to the field. It includes those listed below who have contributed to poetry in and from Goa, as well as those writing poetry in Goa. Poetry related to Goa is known to have been written in Konkani, in Portuguese, English and Marathi, apart from other regional, national and international languages to a lesser extent.

Jayanti Naik

Dr. Jayanti Naik, from Amona in the Quepem taluka of Goa, is a Konkani writer and folklore researcher from Goa. She is a short story writer, dramatist, children's writer, folklorist, translator and was the first person to earn a doctorate from the Goa University's Department of Konkani. She is also a Sahitya Akademi award winner. In her career of some three decades, she has produced on average, a book a year.

Ramesh Veluskar

Ramesh Veluskar was a Konkani poet and litterateur from Goa. He died on October 21, 2018.

John Aguiar Konkani poet

John Aguiar is a Konkani poet, writer, media person and lyricist whose songs have been broadcast over the All India Radio network specially in Goa and on CDs.

Prashanti Talpankar is a writer, translator, playwright and an actor, hailing from the coastal state of Goa, India. She is also an awardee of the Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation. She currently serves as an Associate professor at Dnyanprassark Mandal's college and Research Centre, Assagao.

Paresh Narendra Kamat

Paresh Narendra Kamat is a Konkani poet from Marcaim, Goa, India.

Reginaldo Fernandes (1914-1994), better known as Reginald Fernandes was a writer, musician and cultural figure from the world of Goan and Konkani music. He was known for having written a vast number of Konkani romans novels, over a hundred in number. He has been called the "King of Konkani Fiction".
