Pudong (浦东) is a district of Shanghai located east of the Huangpu River across from the historic city center of Shanghai in Puxi. The name refers to its historic position as "The East Bank" of the Huangpu River, which flows through central Shanghai, although it is now administered as the Pudong New Area, a state-level new area which extends all the way to the East China Sea.
Huangpu District, makes up the eastern part of Shanghai's traditional urban core and is today the most central of Shanghai's 16 districts. Huangpu district is the seat of municipal government, includes key attractions such as The Bund and the Old City God Temple, as well as popular shopping districts such as Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road and Xintiandi. The Huangpu District is one of the most densely populated urban districts in the world.
The Bund or Waitan is a waterfront area and a protected historical district in central Shanghai. The area centers on a section of Zhongshan Road within the former Shanghai International Settlement, which runs along the western bank of the Huangpu River in the eastern part of Huangpu District. The area along the river faces the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the Pudong District. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas. From the 1860s to the 1930s, it was the rich and powerful center of the foreign establishment in Shanghai, operating as a legally protected treaty port.
The Huangpu, formerly romanized as Whangpoo, is an artificial 113-kilometer-long (70 mi) river flowing north through Shanghai that was first excavated and created by Lord Chunshen, one of the Four Lords of the Warring States. It is the last significant tributary of the Yangtze before the Yangtze empties into the East China Sea. The Bund and Lujiazui are located along the Huangpu River.
Jing'an District is one of the central districts of Shanghai. In 2014, it had 1,180,000 inhabitants in an area of 37 km2 (14 sq mi).
Yangpu District is one of the 16 districts of Shanghai. It is located in northeastern part of downtown Shanghai, bordering the Huangpu River on the east and south, Hongkou District on the west, and Baoshan District on the north. The southern part of Yangpu District is 4 km (2.5 mi) away from the Bund, a major tourist attraction. It is predominantly composed of residential communities, with a total area of 60.61 km2 (23.40 sq mi) and a population of 1.313 million as of 2010. The district administers 12 subdistricts.
Putuo District, is a municipal district of Shanghai Municipality, People's Republic of China. It covers an area of 54.83 km2 (21.17 sq mi). Putuo District borders Baoshan District to the north, Jing'an District to the east and south east, Changning District to the south west and Jiading District to the west.
Puxi is the historic center of Shanghai, China, and remains the home of approximately 48% of Shanghai's residents in an area of 288 km². Puxi is distinguished from Pudong to its east, which is separated from it by the Huangpu River. Despite the growing importance of Pudong's Lujiazui area, Puxi remains Shanghai's cultural, residential and commercial center.
Shanghai has around 2000 formal bus lines, served by more than 10 bus companies. In the past, Bashi, Dazhong, Guanzhong and Qiangsheng were the four largest; around 2009 they merged to become Bashi Group Companies, including Bashi No.1-6 Bus Passenger Service Companies, Bashi Tram, Bashi Xinxin and Chongming Company, Baoshan Company and Jinshan Company. Each Suburban district also renewed with one company serving each district. Around 2015, Bashi No.1 Passenger Service and Bashi Tram merged to be Bashi No.1 Company, Bashi No.2 Passenger Service became Bashi No.2 Company, Bashi No.3, No.4 Passenger Service merged to be Bashi No.3 Company, Bashi No.6 Passenger Service became Bashi No.4 Company, and Bashi No.5 Passenger Service and Baoshan Company became Bashi No.5 Company.
Wusong, formerly romanized as Woosung, is a subdistrict of Baoshan in northern Shanghai. Prior to the city's expansion, it was a separate port town located 14 miles (23 km) down the Huangpu River from Shanghai's urban core.
The geography of Shanghai is characterised by its location on the Yangtze River Delta on China's east coast and its proximity to the Pacific Ocean via the East China Sea. The city is centred on the Huangpu River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, and extends outwards in all directions, with the suburbs and satellite towns reaching east to the East China Sea, north and west to Jiangsu province, and south to Zhejiang province over Hangzhou Bay.
Suzhou Creek, also called the Wusong (Woosung) River, is a river that passes through the Shanghai city center. It is named after the neighboring city of Suzhou (Soochow), Jiangsu, the predominant settlement in this area prior to the rise of Shanghai as a metropolis.
The Shanghai Ring Expressway (Chinese: 上海绕城高速公路; pinyin: Shànghǎi Ràochéng Gāosù Gōnglù), designated G1503, formerly designated as A30 and G1501, and also known as the Shanghai Suburb Ring Expressway (Chinese: 上海郊环高速公路; pinyin: Shànghǎi Jiāohuán Gāosù Gōnglù), is a 209.22-kilometre-long ring expressway (130.00 mi) that encircles Shanghai, a direct-controlled municipality in the People's Republic of China. It is entirely in Shanghai, except for a small section in the nearby province of Jiangsu at its northwest end.
The Shanghai–Jiading Expressway, commonly referred to as the Hujia Expressway and designated S5, is a 17.37-kilometre-long expressway (10.79 mi) in the city of Shanghai, China. The expressway connects the Middle Ring Road in Baoshan District with the center of Jiading District.
Yan'an Elevated Road is an elevated expressway in the city of Shanghai, China. It runs along Yan'an Road in its entirety, continuing from the east terminus of G50 Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway at Huqingping Interchange to just beyond the old building of Shanghai Natural History Museum, at which point it ends and rejoins Yan'an Road on the surface. Traffic is then partly directed underground to the Bund Tunnel. Motorists continuing east can cross the Huangpu River using the East Yan'an Road Tunnel to Pudong.
North–South Elevated Road is an elevated expressway in the city of Shanghai.
Middle Ring Road is a ring expressway in the city of Shanghai, China. It is the second in a series of four ring expressways around the city of Shanghai. Construction began in April 2003 on the first section of the Middle Ring Road in Yangpu District. The Middle Ring Road crosses the Huangpu River twice, using the Jungong Road Tunnel and the Shangzhong Road Tunnel. On the Pudong side, the southern section from the Shangzhong Road Tunnel to Shenjiang Road opened on 25 December 2009. Most sections of the ring road are elevated. However sections passing through Changning, Minhang District, and Yangpu District run at grade and utilizes Texas U-turn interchanges with the expressway running in a trenched underpass.
Huaihai Road or Huaihai Lu is a road in Shanghai, China. The central section of Huaihai Road is one of the two major shopping streets in central Shanghai; the other is Nanjing Road. Compared with the more touristy Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road is more upscale, and is the preferred destination of local residents. Huaihai Road comprises three sections, the main section being Middle Huaihai Road in the former French Concession of Shanghai. Middle Huaihai Road is also well known by its former French name Avenue Joffre. Huaihai Road East was in the original French Concession and was formerly known as Rue Ningpo (寧波路), while Huaihai Road West was an extra-settlement road built by the Shanghai International Settlement and formerly known as Jordan Road (喬敦路)
Yan'an Road is a road in Shanghai, a major east–west thoroughfare through the centre of the city. The modern Yan'an Road is in three sections, reflecting three connected streets which existed pre-1945: Avenue Edward VII, Avenue Foch and the Great Western Road. The streets were joined together under a common name by the Republic of China government in 1945, then renamed in the early 1950s after the Chinese Communist Party took over Shanghai. The road is named after Yan'an, the Communist base during the Chinese Civil War.
