Sherry J. Gay-Dagnogo [1] (born January 30,1967) is a current Detroit School Board Member elected citywide and a former Democratic member of the Michigan House of Representatives who represented the 8th District. The 8th House District includes portions of Northwest Detroit,including the Bethune,Brightmoor,Castle Rouge,College Park,and Grandmont-Rosedale communities. In January 2020,Gay-Dagnogo announced that she was forming a political committee to explore the possibility of running for Mayor of Detroit in 2021. [2]
Gay-Dagnogo is former Vice President,of the North Rosedale Park Civic Association. [3]
In 2019,a house owned by Gay-Dagnogo was professionally demolished without her permission and without planning permission. The circumstances surrounding the demolition were initially unclear. [4] Gay-Dagnogo had previously sought quotes from local contractors concerning a potential demolition,but decided to renovate it instead. [5] In October,construction debris from the house were discovered in a landfill in Wayne County,twenty-one miles away from the location of the house. [6] A few days later,the owner of a local trucking company self-identified as the responsible party. [7] [8]
As of 2018,Gay-Dagnogo has not sponsored a bill that has been signed into law. [9]
Incumbent State Rep. David Nathan defeated Gay-Dagnogo in the 2012 House District 8 Primary Election for the Michigan House of Representatives. Gay-Dagnogo was re-elected in 2014 and 2016.
In 2018,Gay-Dagnogo ran for the House of Representatives after John Conyers Jr. resigned in December 2017 amid allegations of sexual harassment. She later withdrew. [2]
During a reception celebrating Black History Month in February 2020,Gay-Dagnogo lobbied President Donald Trump to grant clemency to Kwame Kilpatrick. Kilpatrick,former mayor of Detroit,was convicted of extortion,bribery,and conspiracy in 2013 and sentenced to 18 years in prison. [10]

Carolyn Jean Cheeks Kilpatrick is a former American politician who was U.S. Representative for Michigan's 15th congressional district and then Michigan's 13th congressional district from 1997 to 2011. She is a member of the Democratic Party. In August 2010 she lost the Democratic primary election to Hansen Clarke,who replaced her in January 2011 after winning the 2010 general election. Kilpatrick is also the mother of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
Sharon McPhail is an American attorney and politician who served on the Detroit City Council from 2002 until 2006. McPhail was a candidate for mayor in the 1993 and 2005 elections. She was formerly a lawyer in private practice,a division chief in the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office,and an assistant United States attorney. Hansen Hashim Clarke is an American politician and former U.S. Congressman. A Democrat,he was the U.S. representative for Michigan's 13th congressional district from 2011 to 2013. Prior to his election to Congress,he had been a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1991 through 1992 and from 1999 through 2002,and represented the 1st district in the Michigan Senate from 2003 to 2011. Clarke was also the first U.S. Congressman of Bangladeshi descent.

Brenda B. Jones is an American politician who served as a member of the Detroit City Council from 2006 to 2022,and as the president of the City Council from 2014 to 2022. A member of the Democratic Party,Jones also briefly served as the U.S. representative for Michigan's 13th congressional district from November 29,2018,to January 3,2019. She won the 2018 special election to succeed John Conyers following his resignation in December 2017,and was succeeded by Rashida Tlaib. She ran for the seat again in 2020,losing the Democratic primary to Tlaib by a wide margin.

The 2022 United States House of Representatives elections in Michigan were held on November 8,2022,to elect representatives for the thirteen seats in Michigan. The deadline for candidates to file for the August 2 primary was April 19. The congressional makeup prior to the election was seven Democrats and seven Republicans. However,after the 2020 census,Michigan lost one congressional seat. Democrats won a majority of seats in the state for the first time since 2008. This can be partly attributed to the decrease in the number of districts,which resulted in two Republican incumbents –Bill Huizenga and Fred Upton –in the new 4th district. Redistricting also played a part in shifting partisan lean of the districts which favored the Democrats overall,including in the 3rd district,which Democrats were able to flip with a margin of victory of 13 points. That was made possible by a non-partisan citizens' commission drawing the new political boundaries instead of the Michigan legislature after a 2018 ballot proposal was approved.
