Zena Yusuf Mohammed (born 20 December 1987, in Tanzania), known by her stage name Shilole, is a Tanzanian musician [1] and actress. She specializes in the R&B, Zouk and new generation Tanzania music popularly known as Bongo Fleva. Shilole is considered one of the top female artists in Tanzania; her works has been nominated 3 times in KTMA, [2] Tanzania's top music awards. [3] She has also recorded with a number of artists including Mr Camera (South Africa) and Selebobo (Nigeria). [4] Shilole is considered as one of the most influential artist among her fans and is said to be the most loved female artist in Tanzania, the first female artist in Tanzania to clock 1 million followers in Instagram, Tanzania's most popular social network... [5] Shilole is credited as one of the key figures in the popularization of Tanzania's new music genre Bongo Flava, as a career to upcoming female artists.

Early life

Shilole was born in Igunga, Tabora Tanzania in 1987. Raised by a single mom who died at an early age, Shilole worked hard to overcome her challenges to one of the most influential artists of her generation in Tanzania. [6] Shilole's story of overcoming a hard childhood to become one of the leading female artists in Tanzania is considered as an inspiration to many people in Tanzania. Her marriage in 2017-2018, was covered by Nairobi News. [7]

Bongo Flava is a nickname for Tanzanian music. The genre developed in the 1990s, mainly as a derivative of American hip hop and traditional Tanzanian styles such as taarab and dansi, with additional influences from reggae, R&B, and afrobeats, to form a unique style of music. Lyrics are usually in Swahili or English, although increasingly from mid 2000s there has been limited use of words from Sub-Saharan African music traditions due to the influence of Afrobeats and Kwaito with their dynamics usage of West African Pidgin English, Nigerian Pidgin or other Creole language.


Tanzanian Hip-hop, which is sometimes referred to Bongo Flava by many outside of Tanzania's hip hop community, encompasses a large variety of different sounds, but it is particularly known for heavy synth riffs and an incorporation of Tanzanian pop.
