The Shilp Guru is the highest honour in the Indian handicrafts sector awarded by Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It is conferred annually upon 10 master craftspersons who have created an exceptional piece of craft work, showcased highest level of quality and skill in the traditional Indian handicrafts and passed on their skills to the next generation of artisans. The awards were first introduced in 2002 where 10 eminent master craftpersons were honoured with Shilp Guru (master artisan) title by the President of India. It is presented along with Sant Kabir Awards and National Handicrafts Award to master craftspersons and master weavers, introduced in 1965. [2] Most recent awards were presented on 28 November 2022 by the Vice President of India to 30 master craftspersons for the year 2017, 2018 and 2019. [3] As of 2019, the award consists of 2 lakh (equivalent to 2.1 lakhorUS$2,700 in 2023) prize money, a plaque, a gold coin, a shawl and a certificate. [4]

Abdul Kadar Khatri (1961–2019) was an Indian master craftsman of traditional hand block printing known as Bagh Print. He was the son of Ismail Sulemanji Khatri, founder of Bagh print. He along with his father saved the tradition of Textile printing of Bagh from extinction and taken it to new heights. His artifacts have brought laurels to India and particular to Madhya Pradesh state from across the globe by showcasing his exceptional talent in Bagh Print in many countries. Pravakar Maharana is an Indian sculptor and painter from Odisha. In 2018, he received the Padma Sri honour by the President of India for his contributions towards the preservation of traditional sculpture art of Odisha.

National Handicrafts Award is an Indian Government award conferred to outstanding master craftspersons in recognition of their outstanding contribution towards development of crafts. The main objective of this award is to give recognition to the outstanding craftspersons in the Handicraft sector. This award is amongst the highest award for the handicrafts artisans of the India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lalita Vakil</span> Indian textile artist

Lalita Vakil is an Indian embroidery artist known for her contributions to the preservation and promotion of Chamba Rumal, a traditional form of handkerchief embroidery from Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh.

Lourembam Bino Devi is a practitioner and a popularizer of the appliqué art of Manipur called Leeba in the Meitei language. The Leeba art is used in creating Monmai which is a decorative circular appliqué art piece used in covering both ends of the traditional Manipuri bolster pillow. In the olden days, Leeba was practiced at "Phiribi Loishang", which is a house for maintaining clothes worn by the deities and royals. The apparels used by the royals, including shoes, were mostly designed using the Leeba technique. Bino Devi has devoted her life to practice this art form and to revive it by trying to transmit her skills to younger generation of interested women. She has been providing this training in collaboration with the Heritage Foundation of Mankind, a Non-Governmantal Organization located in Imphal. She has also conducted several workshops at Imphal and at various other places in India.
