Shougrakpam Hemanta (born 1969) is an Indian comedian, actor, writer and director, who has worked in various Shumang Kumhei plays and Manipuri films. [1] He is well known for his role of Oja Tolhan in Eegi Mahao and his portrayal of the title role in the movie Mantri Dolansana. [2] In 2017, he was conferred with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in recognition of his contribution in the traditional Meitei theatre of the Shumang Kumhei. [3] With this, he became the first person to receive the award for this art form.

Shougrakpam Hemanta is also the lifetime secretary of Manipur State Shumang Leela Council. [4]

Career

Hemanta joined Shumang Kumhei on 20 December 1982. [5] In the beginning of his career in the field of performing arts, he did not receive patronage from his parents. [6] With his strong courage and determination, he continued to learn the basics of the traditional theatre form. [7] He had received guidance from renowned theatre personalities like L. Ibotombi Sharma, N. Angouton Meetei and T. Nabakumar Singh. [8] He received the first Best Comedian award for his role in the Shumang Leela Sharat Ritugi Purnima. He has acted in more than 70 plays. Some of his well known plays include Lidicegee Gulap, Memsahebki Saree, Kanchi Ashram and Ningol Chakkouba. [9] He has also directed more than 20 Shumang Leelas and wrote around eight plays. He bagged the Best Director Award and won Best Comedian Award 25 times. [10]

His is popularly known as Oja Tolhan for his comic role of a teacher in the movie Eegi Mahao. His titular role in the comedy-genre film Mantri Dolansana is also vividly remembered until today by the cinema lovers of Manipur. He has directed a movie named Shakhangdaba.

Shumang Kumhei, also known as Shumang Leela, is a Meitei traditional form of theatre, usually performed in Manipur, North East India. The theatre is arranged in the form of open air from four sides. The roles are all played by male actors, some dressed as beautiful ladies. The role of male characters are played by female artists in case of female theatre groups. This traditional theatre form was prevalent since the time of monarchical rule in Manipur. But the proper form of Shumang Leela had its inception in 1895 A.D.

Sakharam Prabhakar Jalgaonkar, known as Appa Jalgaonkar or Appasaheb Jalgaonkar, was an Indian harmonium player from the state of Maharashtra. Born in 1922 and adopted when he was two years old, he started to learn singing but had to stop due to voice change with the onset of puberty and later shifted to learn harmonium. He accompanied several Hindustani classical singers, tabla artistes and dancers in their performances. He received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Harmonium category – a category in which the Sangeet Natak Akademi felicitates rarely. Following a paralysis attack in late 1990s, he died in 2009.

Umakanata 'Gogoi' Bairagi was an Indian Tokari geet musician from Assam. He was a composer of over 1400 Tokari Geets and had expertise over various fields of folk music. In 1971, he was honoured with the title of 'Bairagi' by All India Radio Dibrugarh and in 2011, he was honoured with the title 'Guru' by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
