Shuaibu Abubakar Audu (born 6 November 1980) is a Nigerian investment banker and politician [1] [2] who is the current minister of Steel Development since August 2023. [3]

Contents

Before his appointment as minister, he was a gubernatorial aspirant in Kogi State. [4] Following the submission and subsequent screening of ministerial nominees by the senate, Audu was appointed minister of Steel Development on 16 August 2023. [5]

Early life and education

Audu was born to Abubakar Audu in Kogi. [6] He attended the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom where he earned a bachelor's degree in Business economics in 2001. He earned a master's degree from Henley Business School, University of Reading. [7] Audu obtained a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Oxford in 2013 [8] where he was a member of St Hugh's College. [9]

Professional career

Stanbic IBTC (2013 — 2023)

Shuaibu Audu worked in Lagos as an investment analyst with Stanbic IBTC. He also served as an executive director of the bank's assets management subsidiary. [10]

Audu served as chief executive officer of the Stanbic IBTC Investment for 10 years until his foray into politics. [11] [12]

Politics (2023)

Audu is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) where he contested as an aspirant in the governorship primaries of the Kogi State chapter of the party. [11]

In February 2023, he announced his intention to contest [13] in the November 2023 Kogi State gubernatorial election under the All Progressives Congress (APC). [14]

He lost the gubernatorial ticket to Ahmed Ododo at the primary elections in April 2023. [15] [16] [17] [18]

In August 2023, he was made Minister of Steel Development by President Bola Tinubu. [19] [20]

Personal life

Shuaibu Audu is the son of former Kogi State Governor, Abubakar Audu. He is married with children. [8]

The 2015 Kogi State Gubernatorial election was held on 21 November 2015 to elect a governor for Kogi State. The last Kogi state gubernatorial election was held in 2011. The incumbent governor, Captain Idris Wada, ran for re-election against the former governor, Prince Abubakar Audu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress. Kogi State has a different governorship election calendar from other states of the Nigerian Federation. This happened in 2007, when the Appeal Court affirmed annulment of the election of the incumbent, Ibrahim Idris for electoral irregularities and ordered a fresh election in a case filed by Abubakar Audu.

Incumbent All Progressives Congress Governor Gboyega Oyetola was eligible for re-election but lost by a 3.5% margin to former Senator Ademola Adeleke—the nominee of the Peoples Democratic Party. Adeleke and his running mate, Kola Adewusi, were inaugurated on 27 November. However, the Election Petition Tribunal overturned the result on 27 January 2023, awarding the win to Oyetola; Adeleke immediately appealed the ruling and remains in office pending the results of further litigation.

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly, three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State, Kogi State, and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

The 2023 Enugu State gubernatorial election took place on 18th March 2023, to elect the Governor of Enugu State, with Peter Mbah declared winner alongside his running mate Barrister Ifeanyi Ossai of the Peoples Democratic Party (Nigeria), after they got the plurality of votes and won over 25% of the votes in two-third of the state. Mr Mbah polled 160,895 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the Labour Party (Nigeria) candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, who scored 157,552 votes. The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Frank Nweke Jr, garnered 17,983 votes to come a distant third, while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Uche Nnaji, placed fourth, with 14,575 votes. The election was contested in the Tribunal by Chijoike Edeoga but the tribunal eventually upheld the victory of Peter Mbah.

Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye is a Nigerian lawyer, entrepreneur, politician, and film producer. She ran as the first female candidate for the presidency in Nigeria under the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 general elections but later stepped down for Bola Tinubu. She was appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development on August 21, 2023.
