Sideways is an album by Norwegian guitarist and composer Jacob Young recorded for ECM in May 2006 and released on November 2, 2007. [2] [3] Young's quintet features trumpeter Mathias Eick, reed player Vidar Johansen and rhythm section Mats Eilertsen and Jon Christensen.

The AllMusic review by Matt Collar states, "Much like other ECM releases, with its mix of laid-back edginess and ambient, searching improvisations, Sideways works just as well on a cerebral, engaging level as on a background, afterglow level." [2]
On All About Jazz, Budd Kopman observed, "Sideways is remarkable in how its many layers interact to produce music that combines beauty and intellectual rigor," while John Kelman wrote "Young's very strength is his ability to compel and evoke in the most understated fashion. The beautifully spacious Sideways finds him comfortably evolving, bringing together his personal biculturalism with a musical cosmopolitanism that transcends any single stylistic authority." [4] [5]

Mathias Eick is a Norwegian jazz musician, and the brother of the jazz musicians Johannes Eick and Trude Eick. He is mainly known from his releases on the jazz label ECM Records. His main instrument is the trumpet, but he also plays upright bass, vibraphone, piano and guitar. He has performed with several well-known music groups and musicians, e.g. Jaga Jazzist, Manu Katché, and the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra together with Chick Corea and Pat Metheny. Besides this he is also known for his collaboration with Norwegian singer-songwriter Thomas Dybdahl, and recordings with the Norwegian bands Turboneger, DumDum Boys, Motorpsycho, D'Sound and Bigbang.
Stian Carstensen is a multi-instrument Norwegian musician, entertainer and with Jarle Vespestad (drums) and Nils-Olav Johansen, central members of the Balkan-jazz orchestra Farmers market.
Trygve Seim is a Norwegian jazz saxophonist and composer. Seim has released numerous albums since 1992, including over 20 albums for ECM Records as a composer, band-leader or co-band-leader.

He is the brother of jazz vocalist Susanna Wallumrød and the drummer Fredrik Wallumrød, and cousin to the pianist David Wallumrød.

Tore Brunborg is a Norwegian jazz musician and composer who plays saxophone. He was born in Trondheim but grew up in Voss where a jazz environment was flowering. Known from numerous appearances with international greats including Bugge Wesseltoft, Håvard Wiik, Audun Kleive, Anders Jormin, Diederik Wissels, Arild Andersen, Pat Metheny, Per Jørgensen, Geir Lysne, Misha Alperin, Bjørn Alterhaug, Jan Gunnar Hoff, Jarle Vespestad, Jon Christensen, Jon Balke, Nils Petter Molvær, Vigleik Storaas, Bo Stief, and Billy Cobham.

Emilie Stoesen Christensen is a Norwegian jazz singer and actor, the daughter of Jazz drummer Jon Christensen (1943–2020) and actress Ellen Horn, and half sister of Theater director Kjersti Horn. She has lately been gaining recognition for her work with a number of Norwegian bands, including the «Oslo JazzNonett», and made her record debut with Jon Balke's Batagraf album Say And Play (2011) at ECM Records.
