Siegfried Vogel (born 6 March 1937) is a German operatic bass. Based at the Staatsoper Berlin, he performed internationally at major opera houses and festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Bayreuth Festival. He began in Mozart roles, but expanded his repertoire, including world premieres of operas.
Born in Chemnitz, Vogel took singing lessons in Dresden from age 18, followed by studies at the Musikhochschule Dresden, continued in the opera studio of the Staatsoper Dresden. [1] He made his debut there as Zizell in Adolphe Adam's Si j'étais roi in 1959, and was successful in Mozart roles. He became a member of the Staatsoper Berlin in 1965, where he appeared in Mozart roles again, the title role of Le nozze di Figaro , Leporello in Don Giovanni and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte . He also performed as Rocco in Beethoven's Fidelio , as Kaspar in Weber's Der Freischütz , as Hunding in Wagner's Die Walküre , as Basilio in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia and as Escamillo in Bizet's Carmen , among others. [1] He took part in the world premieres of Paul Dessau's Lanzelot in 1969, [1] [2] of Alan Bush's Joe Hill in 1970, [1] [3] and of Ernst Hermann Meyer's Reiter in der Nacht in 1973. [1] He performed at the Komische Oper Berlin, in 1983 the title role of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, and in 1991 the role of Morosus in Die schweigsame Frau by Richard Strauss. [4]
He sang at the Salzburg Festival, in 1979 as Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss, from 1979 to 1982 in his Ariadne auf Naxos , and in 1980 the role of Luther in a concert performance of Krenek's Karl V . [1] He appeared at the Bayreuth Festival from 1982 to 1989, as Heinrich in Lohengrin , as Biterolf in Tannhäuser , as Fasolt in Das Rheingold and as Titurel in Parsifal . [4]
He appeared worldwide, including tours of the Staatsoper Berlin. He sang at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, at the Paris Opera, at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg, in Brussels, Vienna, at La Scala in Milan, in Venice, Stockholm, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Budapest, Cairo, Nice, and at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. [4] In Lausanne, he appeared in 1983 as Hans Sachs in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and as Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1986 as Hunding in Die Walküre. [4]
Vogel was also regarded as an outstanding concert and oratorio singer, especially in music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Frideric Handel. [4]

Theo Adam was a German operatic bass-baritone and bass singer who had an international career in opera, concert and recital from 1949. He was a member of the Staatsoper Dresden for his entire career, and sang at the Bayreuth Festival from 1952 to 1980. He particularly excelled in portraying roles by Richard Wagner, especially Wotan in Der Ring des Nibelungen, which he also performed at the Metropolitan Opera, among others. In concert, he was a much admired Bach singer and also drew acclaim for his interpretation of the title character of Mendelssohn's Elijah. He was a voice teacher at the Musikhochschule Dresden.
Cheryl Studer is an American dramatic soprano who has sung at many of the world's foremost opera houses. Studer has performed more than eighty roles ranging from the dramatic repertoire to roles more commonly associated with lyric sopranos and coloratura sopranos, and, in her late stage, mezzo-sopranos. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner.
Harry Alfred Robert Kupfer was a German opera director and academic. A long-time director at the Komische Oper Berlin, he worked at major opera houses and at festivals internationally. Trained by Walter Felsenstein, he worked in the tradition of realistic directing. At the Bayreuth Festival, he staged Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer in 1978 and Der Ring des Nibelungen in 1988. At the Salzburg Festival, he directed the premiere of Penderecki's Die schwarze Maske in 1986 and Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss in 2014.

He has taken part in the Bayreuth Festival.
Gerd Nienstedt was a German and Austrian opera singer, bass and bass-baritone. After an international career at major opera houses and the Bayreuth Festival, he was also a theatre director, stage director and academic voice teacher.
Marga Schiml is a German opera singer who sings mezzo-soprano and alto. She has appeared at major European opera houses and festivals, such as the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera and La Scala, at the Salzburg Festival and the Bayreuth Festival. He appeared in the world premieres of Wolf-Ferrari's I gioielli della Madonna in Berlin, Busoni's Die Brautwahl in Hamburg, and Lehár's Giuditta in Vienna.
Wilma Schmidt, also known as Wilma Schmidt-Liebethal, was a German operatic soprano. She performed for five decades in leading roles at the Staatsoper Hannover, and appeared as a guest at other opera houses and the Bayreuth Festival. Her broad repertoire included the Countess in Mozart's Figaro, Agathe in Weber's Der Freischütz, Elisabetta in Verdi's Don Carlo alongside Hans-Dieter Bader, Elisabeth in Wagner's Tannhäuser, and her favourite role, the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss.
