Silvano Martello (born in Bologna,Italy) is an Italian scientist and engineer, and an Emeritus Professor of Operations Research at the University of Bologna. [1] He is known for his research in Operations Research and Mathematical Programming. In particular,he made significant contributions in the areas of knapsack and assignment problems, packing problems, and vehicle routing. [2] As of 2023,he published 160 peer-reviewed articles and was cited more than 7000 times.
He was vice-president of the Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO) from 2014 to 2017, [3] and has been chairman of the European Chapter on Combinatorial Optimization (ECCO) since 1997. [4]
He is editor-in-chief of 4OR,the joint official journal of the Belgian,French, and Italian Operations Research Societies. [5]
Among his PhD students are Andrew H. and Ann R. Tisch Professor Andrea Lodi [6] (Cornell Tech),and Professor Mauro dell'Amico [7] (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia). [8]
Martello graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in Electronic Engineering in 1973. He was an assistant and then an associate professor at the University of Bologna from 1980 to 1990. From 1990 to 1994 he was a full professor of Operations Research and Management Science at the University of Turin. Since 1994 he is a full professor of Operations Research at the University of Bologna.
He is the co-author,with Paolo Toth,of the book Knapsack problems:Algorithms and Computer implementations (John Wiley &Sons,Inc.,1990). [12] He also co-authored,with Rainer Burkard and Mauro dell'Amico, the book Assignment Problems (SIAM,2009). [13]
The knapsack problem is the following problem in combinatorial optimization:
Operations research, often shortened to the initialism OR,is a discipline that deals with the development and application of analytical methods to improve decision-making. The term management science is occasionally used as a synonym.
Harold William Kuhn was an American mathematician who studied game theory. He won the 1980 John von Neumann Theory Prize along with David Gale and Albert W. Tucker. A former Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Princeton University,he is known for the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions, for Kuhn's theorem, for developing Kuhn poker as well as the description of the Hungarian method for the assignment problem. Recently, though,a paper by Carl Gustav Jacobi, published posthumously in 1890 in Latin, has been discovered that anticipates by many decades the Hungarian algorithm.
JenőElek Egerváry was a Hungarian mathematician.
In combinatorial optimization,a field within mathematics, the linear bottleneck assignment problem (LBAP) is similar to the linear assignment problem.
In mathematics, the quadratic bottleneck assignment problem (QBAP) is one of the fundamental combinatorial optimization problems in the branch of optimization or operations research, from the category of the facilities location problems.
Rainer Ernst Burkard is an Austrian mathematician. His research interests include discrete optimization, graph theory, applied discrete mathematics, and applied number theory.
DănuţMarcu is a Romanian mathematician and computer scientist, who received his Ph.D. from the University of Bucharest in 1981. He claimed to have authored more than 400 scientific papers.
Laurence Alexander Wolsey is an English mathematician working in the field of integer programming. He is a former president and research director of the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE) at Universitécatholique de Louvain in Belgium. He is professor emeritus of applied mathematics at the engineering school of the same university.
The Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO) is a regional grouping within the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS) whose aim is to promote Operational Research throughout Europe. It was established in 1975.
The Associazione Italiana di Ricerca Operativa (AIRO) –Optimization and Decision Sciences –is the professional non-profit society for the scientific field of Operations Research in Italy. The society is recognized by the International Federation of Operational Research Societies and its subgrouping, the Association of European Operational Research Societies,as the main national society for Operations Research in its country. AIRO is part of FIMA,the Italian Federation of Applied Mathematics.
The European Chapter on Combinatorial Optimization is a working group whose objective is to promote original research in the field of combinatorial optimization at the European level.
The French Operations Research &Decision Support Society is a professional non-profit society that aims to promote the scientific field of Operations Research (OR) and Decision Support (DS) in France. The society is a member of the European umbrella organization, the Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO),and of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS).
The Belgian Society for Operations Research (ORBEL) is the professional non-profit society for the scientific field of Operations Research in Belgium. The society is recognized by the International Federation of Operational Research Societies and its subgrouping, the Association of European Operational Research Societies,as the main national society for Operations Research in its country.
The Polish Operational and Systems Research Society,POSRS is the Polish scientific, scholarly and professional non-profit society for the advancements of operational and systems research (OR/SR). The Society is the core active body of the Association of Polish Operational Research Societies (ASPORS),the formal member of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies and its subsidiary, the Association of European Operational Research Societies.
4OR - A Quarterly Journal of Operations Research is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that was established in 2003 and is published by Springer Science+Business Media. It is a joint official journal of the Belgian,French, and Italian Operations Research Societies. The journal publishes research papers and surveys on the theory and applications of Operations Research. The Editors-in-chief are Yves Crama,Michel Grabisch, and Silvano Martello.
