Simon Roger Arthur Bailey (born 23 January 1980 [1] ) is an English runner who has been a national fell running champion several times and who has represented his country at the World Mountain Running Trophy.

He is the son of Roger and Vanessa Bailey of Rushton Spencer near the border between Staffordshire and Cheshire. [2]

Bailey’s potential was noticed when he finished second in the Shutlingsloe Fell Race at the age of fourteen and he was encouraged to focus on fell running by the race winner Dave Neill. [3] As young athletes, Simon and his sister Kate both became national champions in their age groups [4] and represented England in the junior races at the World Mountain Running Trophy in 1999, when Simon finished in fifth place [5] and Kate was the bronze medallist. [6]

As a senior athlete, Simon ran at the World Mountain Running Trophy in 2003, finishing eleventh. [7]

In the 2004 season, Bailey became the youngest man to win both the British and English Fell Running Championships in the same year, when he won five out the eight championship races in which he competed and set course records in three of them. [8] He went on to win the English Championships again in 2005 (jointly with Rob Hope), 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016 and his tally of eight wins is higher than that of any other runner in the history of the competition. [9] He was also the British Open Fell Runners Association champion in 2016. [10]

Bailey finished fourth in the up and down race at the Commonwealth Mountain Running Championships in 2009 [11] and in 2015, he took second place in the over-35 category at the World Masters Mountain Running Championships. [12]

In 2006 he married Kirstin Bailey. [13] Kirstin has also competed in fell running and was the Yorkshire champion in 2002. [14]

The Borrowdale Fell Race is an annual fell race held in August, starting and finishing in Rosthwaite. It is considered to be one of the "classic" Lakeland races and the route initially heads over Bessyboot before climbing England’s highest summit, Scafell Pike. Great Gable is then scaled before a descent to Honister Pass and the final climb up Dale Head. The distance is approximately seventeen miles and the route has around 6,500 feet of ascent.

Langdale Horseshoe

The Langdale Horseshoe is an annual Lake District fell race that starts and finishes at the Old Dungeon Ghyll. The course climbs to Stickle Tarn before heading to Thunacar Knott, Esk Hause shelter, Bowfell, Crinkle Crags and Pike of Blisco. The route is approximately 21 kilometres (13 mi) in length with 1,450 metres (4,760 ft) of ascent. It includes much rough and rocky ground. On the descent from Crinkle Crags, many runners negotiate the Bad Step, although it can be avoided depending on route choice. The race often presents navigational difficulties, especially in poor visibility.

Mark Alan Rigby is a British runner who was a national hill running champion and who represented Scotland in the World Mountain Running Trophy.

Beverley Redfern is a British mountain runner who won the 1990 World Mountain Running Championships.

Tracey Brindley is a British runner who has been a medallist at the World Mountain Running Trophy and a national fell running champion.

Andrew Styan is a British fell runner who was the national champion in 1979.
