Simon Home Kidston (born September 1967) is a British classic car dealer, collector, commentator and journalist.
Kidston has built a reputation as one of the leading international dealers in blue-chip collector cars, [1] with clients including Ralph Lauren, Ferrari collector Jean-Pierre Slavic and designer Marc Newson. [2]
Kidston was born in September 1967, [3] the son of Commander Home Kidston, a retired naval officer who owned and raced cars. [4] His uncle was Bentley Boy Glen Kidston, the record-breaking aviator and motor racing driver. [4] His cousin is the fashion designer and businesswoman Cath Kidston.
Kidston grew up near Siena, Italy and was educated in Switzerland. He attended Aiglon College from 1981 to 1985. [5] [6]
Kidston started his career in 1988 in the car auction department at Coys of Kensington. [7]
In 1996, he left to co-found Brooks Europe auction house in Geneva. He created high-profile events such as the annual Ferrari auction in Gstaad [8] and the Pur Sang à Longchamp auction in Paris. [9] From 1996–2006 he was President of Brooks Europe, which later became Bonhams Europe. [10]
In 2006, Kidston left Bonhams to start Kidston SA in Geneva, an independent advisory firm for motor car collectors. [10] In 2018, Kidston opened a new office in Dubai: Kidston DMCC. [11]
Kidston is a magazine contributor, writing columns for 'Classic Cars' and 'Sports Car Market'. He is also a guest contributor at Vanity Fair, Top Gear and Dubai Lifestyle Magazine. [12]
Kidston is head judge of the Cartier Travel With Style Concours in India [13] and an advisor to BMW Classic, the organisers of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, set up in 1929. [14] Between 2007–2014, he was commentator for the Mille Miglia historic rally. [15] [16]
Kidston is an avid car collector, with his collection including a 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Cabriolet originally built for his father. [17] Kidston buys back vehicles his family previously owned, including a Gipsy Moth racing biplane his father flew in New Zealand 75 years prior. [18]
In 2009, Kidston was invited by the Mercedes-Benz Museum to drive the 300 SLR 'Uhlenhaut' coupe. [19] [20]
He splits his time between Dubai, London, Milan and Geneva, and is fluent in Italian and French. [11]
A grand tourer (GT) is a type of car that is designed for high speed and long-distance driving with performance and luxury. The most common format is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-door coupé with either a two-seat or a 2+2 arrangement. Grand tourers are often the coupé derivative of luxury saloons or sedans. Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera is an Italian automobile coachbuilder. Originally established in Milan in 1925, Carrozzeria Touring became well known for both the beauty of its designs and patented superleggera construction methods. The business folded in 1966. In 2006 its brands and trademarks were purchased and a new firm was established nearby to provide automotive design, engineering, coachbuilding, homologation services, non-automotive industrial design, and restoration of historic vehicles.

Bonhams is a privately owned international auction house and one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. It was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son & Neale. This brought together two of the four surviving Georgian auction houses in London, Bonhams having been founded in 1793, and Phillips in 1796 by Harry Phillips, formerly a senior clerk to James Christie.
Concours d'Elegance is a term of French origin that means a "competition of elegance" and refers to an event where prestigious vehicles are displayed and judged. It dates back to 17th-century France, where aristocrats paraded horse-drawn carriages in the parks of Paris during summer weekends and holidays. Over time, carriages gave way to automobiles and the gatherings became a competition among vehicle owners to be judged on the appearance of their vehicles.

The Hudson Italia is an automobile styling study and a limited production two-door compact coupé that was produced by the Hudson Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan, in cooperation with Carrozzeria Touring of Italy, and subsequently marketed by American Motors Corporation (AMC) during the 1954 and 1955 model years.
The Maserati 450S is a racing car made by Italian automobile manufacturer Maserati for participating in FIA's endurance World Sportscar Championship racing. A total of nine were made.
The Alfa Romeo 6C name was used on road, race, and sports cars produced between 1927 and 1954 by Alfa Romeo; the "6C" name refers to the six cylinders of the car's straight-six engine. Bodies for these cars were made by coachbuilders such as James Young, Zagato, Touring Superleggera, Castagna, and Pinin Farina. Beginning in 1933 there was also a 6C version with an Alfa factory body, built in Portello. In the early 1920s Vittorio Jano received a commission to create a lightweight, high performance vehicle to replace the Giuseppe Merosi designed RL and RM models. The car was introduced in April 1925 at the Salone dell' Automobile di Milano as the 6C 1500. It was based on Alfa's P2 Grand Prix car, using a single overhead cam 1,487 cc in-line six-cylinder engine, producing 44 horsepower. In 1928 the 1500 Sport was presented, which was the first Alfa Romeo road car with double overhead camshafts.
The Mercedes-Benz SSK (W06) is a roadster built by German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz between 1928 and 1932. The name is an abbreviation of Super Sport Kurz, German for "Super Sport Short", as it was a short wheelbase development of the Mercedes-Benz Modell S. The SSK's extreme performance and numerous competitive successes made it one of the most highly regarded sports cars of its era.
The Aston Martin One-77 is a two-door, two-seater flagship sports car built by the British car manufacturer Aston Martin. Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este is a Concours d'Elegance event in Italy for classic and vintage cars. It takes place annually near the Villa d'Este hotel in Cernobbio, on the western shore of Lake Como in northern Italy. Since 2011, the event has taken place in the second half of May.
The Aston Martin V12 Zagato is a British sports car/endurance racer made by Aston Martin in collaboration with Zagato to celebrate a fifty-year partnership since the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato. Introduced in Lake Como, Italy at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on 21 May 2011, the Zagato was awarded with the competition's "Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes" which has also been won by the One-77 in 2009. Zagato introduced the "Corsa" (race) version of the car in 2011 and the "Stradale" (road) version in 2012. The Stradale version doesn't have the black quick releases on the bonnet and boot that the Corsa has and the exhaust pipes of the Stradale version are further apart than on the Corsa version.
The Gran Premio Nuvolari was a car race on open streets that was run in northern Italy in from 1954 to 1957. In 1991 it was reborn as an international vintage car race using the same name.
The Ferrari 250 MM was a sports racing car produced by Ferrari from 1952 to 1954. After the initial racing successes of the 3.0-litre Colombo V12 engine, introduced in the 250 S one-off, Ferrari produced a serial racing model. It is best recognisable for the distinctive closed berlinetta bodywork by Pinin Farina. The "MM" in its name stood for the Mille Miglia race.

The Lancia Stratos Zero or Lancia Stratos HF Zero is a grand tourer concept sports car from the Italian automobile manufacturers Bertone and Lancia. It was presented at the 1970 Turin Auto Show, predating the production Lancia Stratos by three years. It is currently owned by Phillip Sarofim.
