A skate magazine, or skateboard magazine, is a magazine dedicated to skateboarding. [1]

History

The first mention of skateboarding in a magazine was in 1963 when the publisher of the “Surf Guide Magazine,” Larry Stevenson, published the first advertisement for skateboards in his magazine. [1] The first skateboarding magazine “The Quarterly Skateboarder” was published in 1964. Skateboarder Magazine launched in 1975. [1] In 1981, Thrasher Magazine was founded. [1] [2] Slap magazine existed as a monthly print magazine from 1992 through 2008. [3] Concrete Wave Magazine was founded in 2002. [4] [5] In 2019, Transworld Skateboarding announced they were discontinuing their print magazine, continuing only as an online platform. [6]

Covers

In skateboarding, getting one's picture on the cover of a skate magazine is often a mark of success and pride. [7]

Advertising

Skateboard magazines sell advertising space to skate companies to advertise their goods. Before the internet, skate mags were one of the primary ways to learn about new skaters. [7]

Online magazines

Since the advent of the internet, many skate magazines shifted their focus online. In 2011, Ian Michna and Forrest Edwards founded Jenkem Magazine as an online skate magazine platform. [8]

Skate magazine archives

In an effort to preserve skate magazines, the Look Back Library was founded in 2015. The Look Back Library is a project promoting skate magazine history, literacy, and the appreciation of printed skateboard materials, particularly magazines, through community outreach such as exhibits and by installing skate magazine libraries at local Skate shops and other venues. [9]

Chris Cole is an American professional skateboarder. As of September 2020, his sponsors are Fallen Footwear, Monster Energy, Bones Bearings, Cult Crew, Thunder Trucks, Spitfire Wheels, Stance, Kershaw Knives, Grizzly Griptape, GoPro, Indian Motorcycles, cbdMD, Remind Insoles, and most recently Zero Skateboards.

Transworld Skateboarding (TWS) was an international magazine on skateboarding that was based in Carlsbad, California, United States. The publication also ran an accompanying website and video production company. In February 2019, the publishers of Transworld magazine, The Enthusiast Network, were purchased by American Media, Inc. In March 2019, the print edition of Transworld magazine was discontinued.

Rick McCrank is a Canadian professional skateboarder, television host, skate shop owner, and skate company co-owner.

William Corey Duffel known as Corey Duffel, is a professional skateboarder from Walnut Creek, California.

Alex Olson is a goofy-footed American professional skateboarder, company owner, and entrepreneur. Olson runs the companies Call Me 917 and Bianca Chandon.

William Strobeck is an American filmmaker, director, videographer, and photographer based out of New York City. Strobeck directed the skate videos: cherry (2014), BLESSED (2018), CANDYLAND (2019), and STALLION. (2021).

<i>Jenkem Magazine</i>

Jenkem is an online skateboarding and culture magazine founded in 2011 and operated from Brooklyn, New York. The website features interviews with professional skateboarders, industry professionals, graphic artists, and musicians, as well as video segments, mixtapes, podcasts, essays on skateboard history, and an online clothing store. They have published two full length books of essays and interviews, and maintain a record label that features skateboarder musicians.

Steve Rodriguez (skateboarder) American skateboarder

Steve Rodriguez is a goofy-footed American skateboarder, skate company owner, skatepark designer, community organizer, and creative services director, who lives and skates in NYC.

Look Back Library Preservation organization

Look Back Library (LBL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of skateboard magazines, and other printed skateboard materials, through traveling exhibits and the building of publicly accessible skateboard magazine libraries.

Jaime Reyes is a goofy-footed American skateboarder from Hawaii. Reyes is a pioneer in women's street skating. As of 2020, Reyes is one of only three women to grace the cover of Thrasher Magazine.

Slap Magazine was an American skate magazine created by Kevin Thatcher and Fausto one late night when they sparked an idea to create their own competition. At the time they ran Thrasher Skateboard Mag. The next day they put Lance Dawes in charge of it (1992), while he worked for Thrasher. Slap was distributed by High Speed Productions for 16 years. The Slap Magazine website still serves as a highly popular message board for skateboarding content and conversation.

Theodore Barrow, also known as Ted Barrow, is an American art historian, writer, skateboarding critic, social media persona, lecturer, skateboarder, and professor based in New York City.

Skate Jawn is a skateboarding magazine founded in Philadelphia, PA in 2010 by Marcus Waldron. Skate Jawn produces a bimonthly magazine as well as a yearly photo issue. Skate Jawn releases video content and premieres skate videos via its website.

Darrell Stanton is a goofy-footed professional skateboarder from Houston, Texas.

Jahmal Williams is a regular-footed professional skateboarder, skate company owner, and artist from Boston, Massachusetts.

Skate photography Taking images of skateboarding

Skate photography or skateboarding photography is the act of photographing skateboarding. Skate photography has been an integral part of skateboarding since its inception, used as a way to document and share the skateboarding tricks performed by skateboarders. Influential skate photographers include Skin Phillips, Glen E. Friedman, Dobie Campbell, Spike Jonze, Tobin Yelland, and Mike O'Meally.
