Scott Elliott Jenkins is an English musician from Beckenham. He is best known for his 2023 single, "Rave Out", with Turno and Charlotte Plank, which charted at No. 37 on the UK Singles Chart; his 2024 follow-up with Plank, "Green & Gold" with Rudimental and Riko Dan, charted at No. 29. He has also released the collaborative album Pure Bassline 2 with DJ Q and Jamie Duggan, which charted at No. 2 on the UK Dance Albums Chart, and the 2021 studio album Faith in Chaos, which charted at No. 79 on the UK Album Downloads Chart.

Life and career

Early life

Scott Elliott Jenkins [1] is from Beckenham, [2] and attended Langley Park School for Boys [3] and a university in Canterbury. He became interested in electronic music after hearing the works of the Prodigy and Pendulum. [4] When he was fourteen or fifteen, his school won a grant from the government of the United Kingdom to renovate its music department, which it used to order itself iMacs with Logic Pro on them, which prompted Jenkins to develop an interest; [5] he initially made dubstep, drum and bass, rap and trap beats. [6]

He also began DJing aged fifteen, after a tutor came into his school and offered lessons during lunchtimes; [5] he learnt on Serato, as that was what was being advertised in Langley Park at the time, though later switched to using a set of Pioneer CDJ-350s after saving up for a year. [7] His first set was at a parent–teacher conference. [8]

Bassline works, Pure Bassline 2, and Faith in Chaos

In 2013, aged 17, Jenkins was introduced by a friend to "The Grid" by Bristol-based duo My Nu Leng; enamoured by what he was hearing, he switched to making bassline, [9] with his first such works being bootleg recordings of grime artists such as Wiley and Skepta. [6] In April 2016, he and Bushbaby set up Lengoland, [10] a Facebook group for music, parties, and track identification; [9] he then signed with CruCast, [11] a record label set up in summer 2016 as a YouTube channel. [12]

In January 2017, he released his first single, "Goes Like", [6] and the following year, his collaborative album with DJ Q and Jamie Duggan, Pure Bassline 2, charted at No. 2 on the UK Dance Albums Chart. [13] In January 2020, "Behind the Bass: Skepsis", a short film produced by Ranvia Johal examining Skepsis, screened as part of a series by Master's journalism graduates at Nottingham Trent University, [14] and the following month, Dave Jenkins of DJ Mag wrote that "during 2016-17", Jenkins, Bru-C, and CruCast act Darkzy had become "household names for anyone following the heavier end of UK bass music". [12]

During the pandemic, Jenkins produced the fifteen-track album Faith in Chaos; he told Manchester's Finest in November 2021 that he had produced it with the intention of producing something that lasted a bit longer, on the grounds that artists were putting tracks out constantly and finding them quickly forgotten. [11] CruCast released the album in October 2021, [15] which Jenkins promoted with a show at Ministry of Sound, [16] and which charted at No. 79 on the UK Album Downloads Chart; [17] shortly afterwards, he moved to Liverpool. Drum and bass works, "Rave Out", and "Green & Gold"

In April 2022, Jenkins' remix of DJ Fresh's drum and bass track "Gold Dust" appeared on a package of remixes intended to celebrate the song's 10th anniversary, [18] even though the song was first released in 2008 and re-released in 2010. [19] Jenkins then diversified into making his own drum and bass, [20] having previously used the genre to close his sets, [5] and in December 2022, he released his 'debut' drum and bass track, "Know What It Means" featuring Raphaella, which was released alongside a music video directed by Eleanor Hann and Ranvia Johal. [20]

The following month, Jenkins attended a writer's camp with Ultra Records, which had been organised by Turno, [21] a jump-up musician who had spearheaded several initiatives relating to men's mental health following the suicide of his brother, [22] including the charity single "What's On Your Mind". [23] "Rave Out", a collaboration with Turno and Charlotte Plank, was the first track completed at the camp, and discussed men's mental health; [21] the track came out in June 2023, and entered the UK Top 40 in September 2023 at No. 37, [24] spending one week there. [25] "Rave Out" later appeared on Plank's mixtape InHer World. [26] Jenkins and Plank later collaborated again in February 2024 for "Green & Gold", a collaboration with Rudimental and Riko Dan [27] of Roll Deep, [28] which charted at No. 29. [29]

Artistry

In a January 2017 interview with UKF Music, he stated that his early bassline works were inspired by hearing Mr. V's "Hypnotic" [6] featuring D Double E [30] on BBC Radio 1Xtra. [6] He subsequently used a July 2017 interview with The Partae to cite Pendulum, the Prodigy, My Nu Leng, Netsky, and Chris Lorenzo  [ de ] as influences [4] and a October 2019 interview with Boohoo.com to cite Skrillex, Flava D, and My Nu Leng. [8]

In a March 2023 interview with Music Radar, Jenkins noted that he had not deviated from Logic since being introduced to it, and that his works used "a lot" of saturation, citing the plugins FabFilter Saturn, iZotope Trash, Newfangled Audio Saturate, Sausage Fattener, and Endless Smile as among those he used; he also stated that he used NI Massive in his works, on the basis that "everyone" in the bassline scene used the synthesiser in theirs. [5] He also stated in July 2017 that many of his tracks were produced drums first, usually starting with the drop. [4]

The following year the label released the single "Another Planet / Voyager" by Pendulum, which peaked at number one in the UK Dance Chart. They also produced their first full-length release with the compilation album Jungle Sound: The Bassline Strikes Back!.

Ed Keeley, better known by his stage name Friction, is a drum and bass producer and DJ from Brighton, England. He runs his own record labels, Shogun Audio & Elevate Records, and has formerly presented a regular overnight show on BBC Radio 1.

Bassline is a music genre closely related to UK garage that originated in South Yorkshire and the West Midlands in the early 2000s. Stylistically it comprises a four-to-the-floor rhythm normally at around 135–142 beats per minute and a strong emphasis on bass, similar to that of its precursor speed garage, with chopped up vocal samples and a pop music aesthetic.

The Prototypes is a British drum and bass project by producer Nick White. Until May 2023, it was a duo alongside fellow producer Chris Garvey. Founded in Brighton, England, in the late 2000s, by 2010 they had released their first singles on labels such as Formation Records and Viper Recordings, and from 2011 to 2013 were signed to Shogun Audio. They have released a number of EPs, and have received radio and live PA support from DJs such as Matrix & Futurebound. Signing exclusively to Viper Recordings in 2014, in the following months the duo released a number of promo singles for a debut album. Their resulting single, "Pale Blue Dot" ranked as Beatport's second top selling drum and bass track of the year. The track was also nominated for Best Track at the Drum & Bass Arena Awards, with The Prototypes also nominated for Best Producer, Best Music Video, and Best DJ.

Noisia were a Dutch electronic music trio consisting of members Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen and Thijs de Vlieger from Groningen, Netherlands. They produced a wide variety of music including drum and bass, dubstep, breakbeat and house, releasing music under labels including Skrillex's Owsla, deadmau5's mau5trap and Jay-Z's Roc Nation. Noisia previously combined with the group Foreign Beggars to form the supergroup side project I Am Legion. They released their collaborative self-titled album on 2 September 2013. Noisia also have production credits under the pseudonym Nightwatch, such as for their work with Alexis Jordan, Hadouken!, Wiley and Wretch 32. They produced Hadouken!'s album For the Masses that charted at number 19 on the UK Albums Chart.

Riddim is a subgenre of dubstep known for its heavy use of repetitive and minimalist sub-bass and triplet percussion arrangements. It shares the same name as the Jamaican genre that influenced both it and dubstep, which originally derived from dub, reggae, and dancehall. Originating in the United Kingdom, specifically Croydon, in the early 2010s as a resurgence of the style used by early dubstep works, riddim started to gain mainstream presence in the electronic music scene around 2015.

Charlotte Plank is an English musician. She released three solo singles and then sang lead vocals on "Dancing Is Healing" by Rudimental and Vibe Chemistry, which charted at No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart. She is a member of Loud LDN.

Alex Morisco-Tarr, known professionally as Vibe Chemistry, is a producer from Deanshanger, England. He had two hits on the UK Singles Chart; "Balling" at No. 35, and "Dancing Is Healing" with Rudimental and Charlotte Plank at No. 5.

Loud LDN is a British collective of female and gender-expansive artists based in London. It was described by NME in December 2022 as a "community of [...] drum 'n' bass, pop, and R&B artists at all stages in their careers".

Francesco Gaetano Moliterno, known professionally as Franko Moliterno or Turno, is an English musician from Bedford. After losing his brother to suicide, Turno released a UK Top 40 single about men's mental health. His charity single, "What's On Your Mind", was released in 2022. The single "Rave Out" with Charlotte Plank and Skepsis charted at No. 37 on the UK Top 40 in 2023.
