Sloan Creek (Missouri)

Sloan Creek is a stream in eastern Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, in the United States. [1] It is a tributary to the Mississippi River.

The stream headwaters arise in north Cape Girardeau at 37°20′48″N89°32′10″W / 37.34667°N 89.53611°W / 37.34667; -89.53611 and it flows southeasterly approximately 2.5 miles through northeast Cape Girardeau to enter the Mississippi due east of Southeast Missouri State College at 37°18′53″N89°30′48″W / 37.31472°N 89.51333°W / 37.31472; -89.51333 Coordinates: 37°18′53″N89°30′48″W / 37.31472°N 89.51333°W / 37.31472; -89.51333 . The stream was named after the owner of a local mill. [3]

As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the population was 75,674. The county seat is Jackson, the first city in the US to be named in honor of President Andrew Jackson. Headwater Diversion Channel

The Headwater Diversion Channel is a canal in southeast Missouri. Flowing west to east, it diverts the headwaters of the Castor and Whitewater rivers and Crooked Creek directly into the Mississippi River south of Cape Girardeau. It was built between 1910 and 1916 by the Little River Drainage District. The streams diverted by the Headwater Diversion Channel formerly flowed into the Little River, and their portions that are downstream of the Diversion Channel still do so.
