Smart City Bhopal is an initiative by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) to "transform Bhopal into a leading destination for Smart, Connected and Eco Friendly communities focused on Education, Research, Entrepreneurship and Tourism." [1] Bhopal is on a list of 98 smart cities declared by the Government of India for development under the Smart Cities Mission. [2]

History

The "100 Smart Cities Mission" was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 June 2015. [3] The finance minister of Madhya Pradesh, Jayant Malaiya, allocated 700 crore (US$93 million) for this project. [4]

Development

Area based development at the 354 acres (143 ha) site at North TT Nagar is under construction [5] [6] The total investment in 450 kilometres (280 mi) of fiber optic cable being laid under Intelligent street lighting is expected to be 500 crore (US$66 million). [7] The Public–private partnership (PPP) mode project is expected to earn BMC around 900 crore (US$120 million) in next decade. [8]

Technology

HP's Universal Internet of Things (UIoT) Platform will be used to create India's first cloud-based Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in Bhopal. The center will enable the complete monitoring and administration of civic utilities and citizen services of Bhopal. [9]

Incubation Centre

B-Nest Bhopal Smart City incubation centre is developed to facilitate start-up. [10] Tie-up with American tech company Esri has been made to provide free access to Esri's cloud-based mappiing platform, software development tools for Startups. [11]

The economy of Madhya Pradesh refers to the economic growth with respect to the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It grew 12% in GDP for the year of 2011–12, for which it received an award from then President Pranab Mukherjee in January 2013 for improving its tourism, medical and infrastructural growth. The economy of Madhya Pradesh is significantly agrarian which is reflecting rapid strides towards industrial and service sectors as well. The Indore and Bhopal Metropolitan Regions are the engines for the state's economy, as they cumulatively contribute more than 45% to the economy of the state.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway 135 km long expressway in Delhi NCR, India

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) or Kundli–Ghaziabad–Palwal Expressway is a 135 km (84 mi) long, 6-lane wide expressway passing through the states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in India. The expressway starts from the Western Peripheral Expressway at Kundli, Sonipat, passing through Baghpat, Ghaziabad and Noida districts in UP and Faridabad district in Haryana before rejoining the Western Peripheral Expressway near Dholagarh, Palwal. Eastern Peripheral Expressway along with Western Peripheral Expressway completes the largest Ring Road around Delhi. The Eastern Peripheral Expressway was declared as National Expressway 2 (NE-2) in March 2006.

Lucknow Metro Rapid transit system in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India

Lucknow Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Lucknow in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Construction of the line begun on 27 September 2014 with the 8.5 km (5.3 mi) stretch from Transport Nagar to Charbagh Railway Station which began its commercial operation on 5 September 2017, making it the fastest built metro rail system in the country. Full operation on Red Line stretch from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport metro station to Munshi Pulia metro station began operation on 9 March 2019.

Kanpur Metro Under construction Metro Project

Kanpur Metro is a rail-based mass transit system which is under construction for the city of Kanpur, India, and extendable to the Kanpur metropolitan area. The feasibility study for the project was done by RITES in June 2015. The study was prepared to control traffic woes and congestion, which are hampering the growth, development, and prosperity of the city area. Two corridors were approved by the government as per DPR. The tenders were floated for the priority section of corridor-1 between IIT to Motijheel. AFCONS Infra has been awarded the tender. Elevated viaduct work has begun,more than 400 out of 538 pillars have been constructed and all the 439 double-T-girders have been erected for making the base of the 9 stations of piority corridor.The pier caps and U girders are being erected and construction work is going in full swing. The priority section of corridor-1 is expected to be operational from December 2021 which will become the fastest built and commissioned metro system in the world.

The Statue of Unity is a colossal statue of Indian statesman and independence activist Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950), who was the first deputy prime minister and home minister of independent India and an adherent of Mahatma Gandhi during the nonviolent Indian Independence movement. Patel was highly respected for his leadership in uniting 562 princely states of India with a major part of the former British Raj to form the single Union of India. The statue is located in the state of Gujarat, India. It is the world's tallest statue with a height of 182 metres. It is located on the Narmada River in the Kevadiya colony, facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam 100 kilometres (62 mi) southeast of the city of Vadodara and 150 kilometres (93 mi) from Surat. Kevadia railway station is located at a distance of just 5 kilometres from Statue of Unity.

The Bhoj Metro is an under construction rapid transit system intended to serve the city of Bhopal, India, the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The total system consists of 6 corridors covering a distance of 105 kilometres (65 mi). The first phase of the Bhopal Metro project consists of 28 km of line 2 & 5 being under construction. This project will cost 80 billion (US$1.1 billion) approximately. There will be three types of run – on road, on bridges, and underground in some locations.[3]

Global Investors Summit

2013 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election

A Legislative Assembly election was held on 25 November 2013 in Madhya Pradesh, India, with the result announced on 8 December. Along with four other state assembly elections, these were the first elections in which the Election Commission of India (ECI) implemented a "None of the above" (NOTA) voting option, allowing the electorate to register a neutral vote but not to outright reject candidates. In a first, the Election Commission of India also appointed Central Awareness Observers, whose main task was to oversee voter awareness and facilitation.

Swachh Bharat Mission Country-wide campaign to eliminate open defecation and improve solid waste management in India

Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, or Clean India Mission is a country-wide campaign initiated by the Government of India in 2014 to eliminate open defecation and improve solid waste management. It is a restructured version of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan launched in 2009 that failed to achieve its intended targets. Phase 1 of the Swachh Bharat mission lasted till October 2019. Phase 2 will be implemented between 2020–21 and 2024-25.

Make in India Government initiative to encourage manufacturing in India

Make in India is an initiative by the Government of India to make and encourage companies to manufacture in India and incentivise dedicated investments into manufacturing. The policy approach was to create a conducive environment for investments, develop a modern and efficient infrastructure, and open up new sectors for foreign capital. The initiative targeted 25 economic sectors for job creation and skill enhancement, and aimed "to transform India into a global design and manufacturing hub."

Purvanchal Expressway Indian expressway connecting Lucknow and Ghazipur

Purvanchal Expressway is an under-construction 340.8 km long, 6-lane wide access-controlled expressway in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The expressway will connect Chand Saray village near Gosainganj in Lucknow district with Haydaria village on NH-31 in Ghazipur district. It is being developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA). According to UPEIDA, it is expected to be inaugurated in October 2021.

Smart Cities Mission Indian government plan for urban development

National Smart Cities Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India with the mission to develop smart cities across the country, making them citizen friendly and sustainable. The Union Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing the mission in collaboration with the state governments of the respective cities. The mission initially included 100 cities, with the deadline for completion of the projects set between 2019 and 2023. The effective combined completion of all projects as of 2019 is at 11%.

Agra Metro Mass rapid transit system in the city of Agra, India

Agra Metro is an under-construction rapid transit network in Agra, the fourth largest city in the Indian state of the Uttar Pradesh. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) was submitted in 2014 and cleared by the Uttar Pradesh government cabinet in 2015. However, due to the formation of a new government and a new Metro Rail Policy, a revised feasibility report was created with the government finally approving the project in early 2019. The Agra Metro is set to consist of two metro lines, with a total length of about 30 kilometres (19 mi).

Startup India is an initiative of the Government of India. The campaign was first announced by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his speech in 15 August 2015.

Kahn River

The river Kahn, also known as Kanh, is a river flowing through Indore, the commercial capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The river does not carry freshwater, and turned into sewage during the early 90s. Efforts are being made to restore the river.

Smart Cities Mission along with Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Urban Housing Mission was launched on 25 June 2015 under the leadership of Narendra Modi by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Smart City Mission is one of the pet projects of Government of India wherein Government is aspiring to create 100 Smart cities in time to come. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is selected on the list of 98 smart cities declared by the Government of India for the expansion of Smart Cities Mission. Surat is selected in the first round of selected 20 Smart Cities and has implemented as well as completed the largest number of projects under Smart City Mission. It received an award by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India for its work in the areas of urban environment, mobility, transport and sustainable integrated development. The objective of Surat Smart City is 'To promote cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of 'Smart Solutions'. Surat Smart City Development Limited (SSCDL) is formed as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the implementation of the Smart City projects at the city level. Surat Smart City Development Limited got incorporated on 31 March 2016
