Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is on a list of 100 smart cities declared by the Government of India for development under the Smart Cities Mission. Pune's quest for better urban living got a boost as it was listed among 100 cities selected by the Union Government of India. As a pre-condition, Pune will need to prepare a city-level plan of its own, which will be evaluated in the second stage of the competition based on a broad set of criteria. At the end, the Union government will select 20 cities that will receive funds for this financial year. [1]
PMC has organized a contest for citizens on 'How to make Pune a smart city’ towards Citizen's participation.
The Digital Pune Hackathon 2015 was inaugurated in the presence of Pune Municipal Commissioner Kunal Kumar. The hackathon has been organised to seek digital solutions to several problems faced by the city in the quest to become a Smart City. Top projects will be selected for implementation in the city by various bodies like PMC, PCMC, PMRDA and PMPML.[ citation needed ]
In January 2018, Google announced that it was rolling out Google Station, a Wi-Fi hotspot solution, in Pune as a part of the Smart City Pune initiative, working with Larsen & Toubro. [2] [3]

The Pune Municipal Corporation is the civic body that governs Pune City, the second largest city of Maharashtra. It is in charge of the civic needs and infrastructure of the metropolis, which is spread over an area of 331.26 sq. km. and has 3.4 million residents. Established on 15 February 1950, the executive power of the PMC is vested in the Municipal Commissioner, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer appointed by the Government of Maharashtra. The position is held by Saurabh Rao since April 2018. The general body of the PMC consists of 162 directly elected councilors, popularly known as "corporators", headed by a mayor. Mukta Tilak (BJP) was elected as the mayor and Navanth Kamble as the deputy mayor by the newly elected general body in March 2017. Tilak is the first member of the BJP to hold the position. Following Kamble's demise while in office, Siddharth Dhende of the RPI (A) was elected as the deputy mayor in June 2017. The land for Pune Municipal Corporation was donated by Bhausaheb Shirole who was second Mayor of Pune city and later became an MLC.
A Smart city is an urban area that uses different types of electronic Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to collect data and then use insights gained from that data to manage assets, resources and services efficiently. This includes data collected from citizens, devices, and assets that is processed and analyzed to monitor and manage traffic and transportation systems, power plants, utilities, water supply networks, waste management, crime detection, information systems, schools, libraries, hospitals, and other community services.
Pune Metro is a metro rail based rapid transit system under construction to serve Pune Central and the areas of Pimpri & Chinchwad. As of December 2019, the system comprises 3 lines with a total length of 54.58 km. The 16.59 km Line 1 PCMC Bhavan – Swargate will be elevated between PCMC Bhavan to Range Hills, from where it will run underground. Line 2 will run from Vanaz to Ramwadi covering a distance of 14.66 km on an elevated viaduct. Lines 1 and 2 are expected to be operational in 2021. The 23.33-km elevated Line 3 will run from the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi via Balewadi to Civil Court. All three lines will align at the Civil Court interchange station.
BharatNet, also known as Bharat Broadband Network Limited, is a telecom infrastructure provider, set up by the Government of India under the Department of Telecommunications for the establishment, management, and operation of the National Optical Fibre Network to provide a minimum of 100 Mbit/s broadband connectivity to all 250,000 gram panchayats in the country, covering nearly 625,000 villages, to improve telecommunications in India and reach the campaign goal of Digital India. The last mile connectivity, with a total of 700,000 Wi-Fi hotspots to cover all 625,000 villages of India by adding 2 to 5 Wi-Fi hotspots per gram panchayat and a minimum of one Wi-Fi hotspot per village, have been created by connecting high-speed 4G base tower stations of commercial telecom operators to BharatNet, whereby commercially non-viable Wi-Fi hotspots will be subsidised by the union government grant of ₹36 billion to sustain the operation. The government has discounted the bulk BharatNet bandwidth rates to the commercial telecom operators by 76% to enable them to offer the highly discounted, affordable, competitive, and commercially viable BharatNet-enabled wireless cellular 4G broadband deals to the rural customers. The ₹450 billion union government share of funding will come from the Universal Services Obligation Fund of the Department of Telecommunications. It will be rolled out with the additional funding by state governments to connect all gram panchayats in India. BharatNet is the world's largest rural broadband connectivity program. It is built under the Make in India initiative with no involvement of foreign companies.

LinkNYC is the New York City branch of an international infrastructure project to create a network covering several cities with free Wi-Fi service. The office of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the plan on November 17, 2014, and the installation of the first kiosks, or "Links," started in late 2015. The Links replace the city's network of 9,000 to 13,000 payphones, a contract for which expired in October 2014. The LinkNYC kiosks were devised after the government of New York City held several competitions to replace the payphone system. The most recent competition, in 2014, resulted in the contract being awarded to the CityBridge consortium, which comprises Qualcomm; Titan and Control Group, which now make up Intersection; and Comark.

National Smart Cities Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India with the mission to develop smart cities across the country, making them citizen friendly and sustainable. The Union Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing the mission in collaboration with the state governments of the respective cities. While the mission initially included only 100 cities, the government later announced to expand the mission to all 4,000 cities in India.

They aim to equip many moving things with wireless hotspots creating a mesh that could be used to build sensors to turn the city smarter.Each vehicle is equipped with a NetRider, a multi network unit with Wi-Fi (802.11p), DSRC, GPS and 4G/LTE connectivity.
Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, d/b/a Jio, is an Indian telecommunications company and wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries, headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Google Station is a Google service that allows partners to roll out Wi-Fi hotspots in public places by providing software and advice on hardware to turn fiber connections into Wi-Fi. It was only implemented in India and Indonesia but in March 2018, the service was launched in Mexico, and Google plans on rolling it out in other countries as well.
