Smoken Up (foaled 7 November 2002) is an Australian champion Standardbred race horse bred in New Zealand. He was the first pacer outside North America to record a mile in under 1:50. He was known as Trigger. [1]

Early racing career

Smoken Up began racing in New Zealand and had 10 race starts before his export to Australia. [2] At age four he was ready to travel to Sydney for the Chariots of Fire at Harold Park but the race was cancelled due to the 2007 Australian equine influenza outbreak. [3]

2007–08

In 2007–08 Smoken Up contested several of the most important races in Australia. In the Victoria Cup he was second to Robin Hood. [4] He then won the South Australian Cup where he defeated Queensland pacer Slipnslide who had only been released from special equine influenza quarantine arrangements just before the race. [5] In the A G Hunter Cup he was second behind Blacks A Fake who had started from a 30 metres handicap [6] and in the Inter Dominion Final, which was hosted by Moonee Valley that season he was third behind Blacks A Fake and Divisive. [7] In June 2008 the new Menangle Park Paceway opened and Smoken Up won the Len Smith Mile on the opening day in a time of 1:51.9 which was the fastest mile recorded in Australia or New Zealand at the time. [8] He won 9 of his 22 starts for the season and $427,946.

2008–09

Smoken Up's 2008-09 season was interrupted by injury. [9] He did still manage to finish second to New Zealand pacer Changeover in the Len Smith Mile [10] and win the feature race on the opening day of the new track at Melton near Melbourne. [11]

2009–10

In the 2009 Miracle Mile Pace Smoken Up finished second behind New Zealand horse Monkey King. The race was run in a time of 1:50.8 which was the fastest mile in Australia or New Zealand to that time. [12] After second places in both the Victoria Cup and South Australian Cup Smoken Up was third to Blacks A Fake and Monkey King in the Inter Dominion at Menangle. He then returned to Menangle in April to win the Len Smith Mile for a second year in a time of 1:50.9. [13] Smoken Up won 8 of his 17 starts for the season and $442,244.

2010–11

Smoken Up won the 2010 Miracle Mile Pace defeating Blacks A Fake in a time of 1:50.3. [1] It reduced the Australasian record of 1:50.9 set by Monkey King the previous year. He then won the South Australian Cup again [14] before contesting the Inter Dominion which was hosted by Alexandra Park, Auckland in 2011 in March and April. Smoken Up won both his heats and in the final he led home an all-Australian finish beating Western Australian pacer Im Themightyquinn and Blacks A Fake from Queensland. [15] It was announced later in the month that Smoken Up had returned a positive swab and he was later disqualified [16] with legal challenges not successful. [17] On April 30, 2011 Smoken Up once again won the Len Smith Mile at Menangle Park Paceway. This time the mile took only 1:48.5 which not only smashed his record set in the Miracle Mile Pace but it was the first time 1:50 had been broken outside of North America. [18] He won 9 of his 13 starts in Australia for the season and $547,151. He was awarded the Australian Horse of the Year title but was stripped of the honour due to the Inter Dominion positive swab.

2011–12

Smoken Up travelled to Brisbane for the opening of the Australasian Pacers Grand Circuit and finished second to Mr Feelgood at Albion Park in the Queensland Pacing Championship. He travelled to New Zealand where he finished second in the New Zealand Trotting Cup behind Terror To Love and won the New Zealand Free For All. [19] He then won a second Miracle Mile Pace defeating Karloo Mick and Im Themightyquinn [20] and the Victoria Cup. [21] Smoken Up won the South Australian Cup with his regular driver Lance Justice replaced by Greg Sugars as Justice had recently broken his ankle and leg. [22] Smoken Up travelled to Perth for the Inter Dominion at Gloucester Park following a track record win at Melton where he won in a 1:51.1 rate for 1740 metres. [23] He was undefeated in his three heats of the series along with Im Themightyquinn and Auckland Reactor. [24] However, in the final Smoken Up galloped effectively ending his winning chance. [25] In April he won the Len Smith Mile at Menangle for the fourth time. [26] He won 12 of 20 starts in Australia for the season and $1,084,957.

2012–13

In 2013 Smoken Up won his fourth South Australian Cup equalling the record for most wins in the race held by Gammalite. [27]

2013–14

Smoken Up won the Cordina Sprint at Menangle breaking 1:50 which earned him another start in the Miracle Mile Pace after his racing career had been in jeopardy due to injury. [28] During the season it was announced that Smoken Up would be retired after a farewell tour including races in Sydney and Adelaide. He made his last race start at Melton on September 6, 2014. [29]

In July 2014 it was announced by Harness Racing Victoria that the race known as The Legends would be renamed the Smoken Up Sprint. [30]

Harness racing, also colloquially known as trotting or the trots, is a spectator sport in Australia, with significant amounts of money wagered annually with bookmakers and the Totalisator Agency Board (TAB). In Australia there are 90 harness racing tracks, which hold over 1,900 meetings annually. There are approximately 2,900 drivers and 4,000 trainers with about 5,000 Standardbred horses foaled and registered each year.

The New Zealand Cup for standardbred horses, also known as either the New Zealand Trotting Cup or the New Zealand Pacing Cup is a Group One (G1) harness race held annually by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club at Addington Raceway in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The Victoria Cup is the premier middle distance harness race of Australia. Conducted over 2575m, rather than the staying distance of over 3000m or the sprint distance of under 2000m, the Victoria Cup was run at the Melbourne Showgrounds up until 1975, when it was shifted to Moonee Valley. In 2009 the SEW Eurodrive Victoria Cup will be run at Harness Racing Victoria's new venue, Melton Entertainment Park at Melton. The race has been part of the Australasian Grand Circuit since 1987. Conducted in February from 1987 to 2003, the race is now conducted over two nights in December, alongside the Australasian Trotting Grand Prix.

The Miracle Mile is an Australian harness racing event for Standardbred pacers that was held at Harold Park Racetrack each November until 2008 when the race was switched to Menangle Park Paceway. Prize money has long been among that of Australia's leading harness races and has often included bonuses for speed.

Harold Park Paceway was a harness racing track in Forest Lodge, New South Wales, in use from 1890 to 2010. It was a half-mile track but was just 739 metres in circumference until some changes in its later years. Races at the track were run over distances of 1,760 m, 2,160 m, 2,565 m and occasionally 2,965 m. Before its configuration, events were run over one mile, 9 furlongs and 170 yards, 11+3⁄4 furlongs, 13 furlongs and 98 yards and 15 furlongs and 92 yards – these distances were all for standing starts. For mobile racing, the distances were one mile, 9+1⁄2 furlongs and 11+1⁄2 furlongs.

Blacks A Fake is a brown Standardbred gelding that won the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 Inter Dominion Championships, making him the only four-time winner of Australasia's premier harness race. He finished second, beaten by a long neck, in the 2009 Inter Dominion to Mr Feelgood (USA). His other achievements include wins in the Victoria Cup and Hunter Cup and three Australian Horse of the Year titles. He is Australasia's highest earning Standardbred, and was the world's highest earning pacer. He also was inducted into the Inter Dominion Hall of Fame.

Christian Cullen is a Standardbred stallion and was one of New Zealand's best pacers. Named after the New Zealand international rugby union player, Christian Cullen, he won 22 of his 31 starts, and $NZ1,249,150 in prize money. He is notable in that he won both the Auckland Pacing Cup and New Zealand Trotting Cup races, the richest harness races in New Zealand. A powerful and impressive stallion, he has been particularly successful at stud.

The Australian Harness Horse of the Year is an honour that recognises the top harness racing horse in the Australia. The award is selected by industry people and media representatives.

The Auckland Pacing Cup which is sometimes referred to as the Auckland Trotting Cup or merely the Auckland Cup is a race held at Alexandra Park in Auckland, New Zealand for Standardbred horses. It is one of the two major harness races, along with the New Zealand Cup, held in New Zealand each year for the highest grade pacers. It is a Group 1 championship race and has been won by many of the champion pacers in New Zealand.

Harness racing in New Zealand is primarily a professional sport which involves pacing and trotting competitions for Standardbred racehorses. The difference is the horse's gait or running style:

The Inter Dominion Trotting Championship Grand Final was a race for trotters within the overall Inter Dominion series. The series is held each year, and is a harness racing competition for both trotters and pacers that has been contested since 1936 in Australia and New Zealand. The host of the series is rotated between the 6 harness racing states of Australia and the North and South Islands of New Zealand. However, in recent years the Trotting series has mainly been held in Victoria with other Australian states reluctant to host the series. It forms part of the overall Inter Dominion series for pacers and trotters.

The Inter Dominion is a harness racing competition that has been contested since 1936 in Australia and New Zealand.

Captain Joy is a Standardbred pacing racehorse whose wins include 6 Group 1 victories including three Derbies, 13 consecutive wins as a 2 and 3 year old and a total of 26 wins through to the end of his 6 year old season.

Changeover is a New Zealand Standardbred racehorse and stud stallion.

Monkey King is a leading New Zealand Standardbred racehorse. He is most noted for winning the New Zealand Trotting Cup and New Zealand Free-For-All double in two consecutive years, in 2009 and 2010, the first time this has ever been achieved. He also won the Miracle Mile Pace and the Auckland Trotting Cup in the 2009/10 season, as well as running second in the Inter Dominion Grand Final. As a result, he achieved the highest-earning season ever by a New Zealand pacer, and was crowned New Zealand Horse of the Year. These victories came after several top successes as a 3 and 4 year-old and consistently rating among the top horses in New Zealand over the following years. He was inducted to the Addington Harness Hall of Fame in 2019. He was at the time New Zealand's richest ever pacer with over $3,400,000 in stakes.

Terror To Love is a New Zealand standardbred racehorse. He is best known for being a three-time winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup, in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He was trained by Graham and Paul Court.

Preux Chevalier was a pacer foaled in New Zealand but notable for his racing successes in Australia in 1984 and 1985 including wins in the Inter Dominion Pacing Championship, Miracle Mile Pace and A G Hunter Cup.

Westburn Grant (1985–2020) was an Australian champion Standardbred race horse notable for being a three time Australian Harness Horse of the Year.

Im Themightyquinn is an Australian champion Standardbred race horse notable for being a three time Australian Harness Horse of the Year and three time winner of the Inter Dominion. He was inducted into the Inter Dominion Hall of Fame.
