Snout were an Australian independent rock band who were formed in Melbourne in 1991 and disbanded in 2002. They released numerous recordings and were twice nominated for an Australian Record Industry Association Award. Ross McLennan, the founder of the band, has since gone on as a solo artist who has been nominated for the Australian Music Prize. Anthony Paine, has also gone on to be nominated for this award, with the group Black Cab.
Founded by Ross McLennan in Melbourne, Australia in 1991. Snout made their first recorded appearance the following year on a Half a Cow Records compilation, [1] Slice Two [2] They went on to be a fixture of the Australian independent music scene until their demise in 2002. [3]
The band's first release in their own right was in 1993 with the Cleans and Brightens EP, through the Au Go Go label. In 1994 they released their debut album, What's That Sound?
The lineup at this time consisted of Ross McLennan (Bass and vocals), Rob Wolf (Guitar and backing vocals) and Hugh Williams (Drums). [4]
Soon after the recording of What's That Sound?, Rob and Hugh left the band. McLennan recruited Greg Ng for guitar and backing vocal duties. Ng had previously fronted Melbourne shoegaze exponents Afterglow. New drummer, Ewan McCartney had previously performed with Ripe.
This combination recorded the band's most successful releases; The New Pop Dialogue (1996) and Circle High and Wide (1998).
This lineup remained stable until 1999, when Ng left the band and was replaced by Anthony Paine, of High Pass Filter, who played guitar on the band's final album, Managing Good Looks (2001). [5] This album was released on W.Minc Productions, run by Graham Lee (The Triffids) and Steve Miller (The Moodists). Two tracks featured Rebecca Barnard on backing vocals.
Snout played extensively on the live circuit in Australia, leaving Melbourne regularly to tour in their own right and with other prominent names of the era. They also played festivals such as The Big Day Out, Falls Festival, Sunny Sedgewick, Livid and Meredith Music Festival. [6] [7] [8]
Snout played their final gig in November 2002, in Melbourne at the Rob Roy Hotel. [1] [3]
During the 2010 Australian Federal election campaign, Australian Greens candidate Adam Bandt, professed that "I am a fan of jangle-pop bands like Bidston Moss, Underground Lovers, Ross McLennan and Snout," [9]
During the band's existence, McCartney worked on the side projects The Grapes (with Ashley Naylor and Sherry Rich) and as a member of Dan Brodie & the Broken Arrows. [10] [11] Meanwhile, Paine could be found playing with The Hired Guns. McLennan also teamed up with his brother Link, front man of The Meanies to form the lo-fi duo, Meuscram.
After the demise of the band, Ross McLennan, released material as a solo artist. Notably, his album Sympathy for the New World was nominated for the 2008 Australian Music Prize. [12]
Greg Ng released the hip-hop inspired, Straight Out of M-Town under the name DCP. [13] Ewan McCartney went on to drum with The Bakelite Age. Meanwhile, Paine can be found building and repairing guitars under the name Harvester Guitars as well as continuing to be involved with bands. Notably, Black Cab who were nominated for the Australian Music Prize in 2009. [14] [15] Rob Wolf moved to Queensland and works for John Deere tractors. Hugh Williams is a former vice president at Google and a Professor at the Melbourne Business School.

They have released five studio albums, Welcome Aboard the 3C10 (2000), Contact High (2002), Eternal Holiday (2004), Different Like You (2008) and Snake (2019). Both Contact High and Eternal Holiday peaked in the top 100 of the ARIA Albums Chart.
Augie March are an Australian pop and indie rock band, which formed in 1996 in Shepparton, Victoria. Since 2001 the group consists of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Glenn Richards, lead guitarist Adam Donovan, bass guitarist Edmondo Ammendola, drummer David Williams, and keyboardist Kiernan Box. Box had replaced Robert Dawson, the band's piano player since March 2000, who died in January 2001.
Timothy Jonathon Ross is an Australian comedian, radio host, writer and television presenter. He began his career performing stand-up comedy with Merrick Watts as part of the duo Merrick and Rosso. He is now better known as the presenter of the ABC shows Streets of Your Town and Designing a Legacy, which reflect his personal enthusiasm for design and architecture.
Custard are an Australian indie rock band formed in 1989 in Brisbane, Queensland. The band is colloquially known as Custaro due to frequent misreadings of its name.
The Go-Betweens were an Australian indie rock band formed in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1977. The band was co-founded and led by singer-songwriters and guitarists Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, who were its only constant members throughout its existence. Drummer Lindy Morrison joined the band in 1980, and its lineup would later expand to include bass guitarist Robert Vickers and multi-instrumentalist Amanda Brown. Vickers was replaced by John Willsteed in 1987, and the quintet lineup remained in place until the band split two years later. Forster and McLennan reformed the band in 2000 with a new lineup that did not include any previous personnel aside from them. McLennan died on 6 May 2006 of a heart attack and the Go-Betweens disbanded again. In 2010, a toll bridge in their native Brisbane was renamed the Go Between Bridge after them.
Ross James McLennan is an Australian indie rock musician and songwriter. He was the founding mainstay of indie guitar pop band, Snout, from 1991 to 2002. He undertook a side project, Meuscram, with his younger brother, Lindsay to deliver a lo-fi self-titled album in 1995. McLennan has issued four solo albums, Hits from the Brittle Building, Sympathy for the New World, The Night's Deeds Are Vapour (2013) and All the Colours Print Can Manage. Sympathy for the New World was short-listed for the Australian Music Prize for 2008.
Dave Graney is an Australian rock musician, singer-songwriter and author from Melbourne. Since 1978, Graney has collaborated with drummer-multi instrumentalist Clare Moore. The pair have fronted or been involved with numerous bands including The Moodists, Dave Graney and The White Buffaloes, Dave Graney and The Coral Snakes, The Dave Graney Show, Dave Graney and Clare Moore featuring The Lurid Yellow Mist or Dave Graney and The Lurid Yellow Mist and Dave Graney and The mistLY. Everything Was Funny was credited to Dave Graney and Clare Moore.
Christopher John Wilson was an Australian blues musician who sang and played harmonica, saxophone and guitar. He performed as part of the Sole Twisters, Harem Scarem and Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls, and fronted his band Crown of Thorns. Wilson's solo albums are Landlocked, The Long Weekend, Spiderman (2000), King for a Day, Flying Fish (2012) and the self titled Chris Wilson (2018).
The Drones were an Australian rock band, formed in Perth by mainstay lead vocalist and guitarist Gareth Liddiard in 1997. Fiona Kitschin, his domestic partner, joined on bass guitar and vocals in 2002. Other long-term members include Rui Pereira on bass guitar and then lead guitar; Mike Noga on drums, vocals, harmonica and percussion; and Dan Luscombe on lead guitar, vocals and keyboards. Their second album, Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By, won the inaugural Australian Music Prize. In October 2010 their third studio album, Gala Mill was listed at No. 21 in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums. Two of their albums have reached the top 20 on the ARIA Albums Chart, I See Seaweed and Feelin Kinda Free. The group went on hiatus in December 2016 with Kitschin and Liddiard forming a new group, Tropical Fuck Storm, in the following year.
Robert Derwent Garth Forster is an Australian singer-songwriter, guitarist and music critic. In December 1977 he co-founded an indie rock group, The Go-Betweens, with fellow musician Grant McLennan. In 1980, Lindy Morrison joined the group on drums and backing vocals, and by 1981 Forster and Morrison were also lovers. In 1988, Streets of Your Town, co-written by McLennan and Forster, became the band's highest-charting hit in both Australia and the United Kingdom. The follow-up single, "Was There Anything I Could Do?", was a number-16 hit on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States. In December 1989, after recording six albums, The Go-Betweens disbanded. Forster and Morrison had separated as a couple earlier, and Forster began his solo music career from 1990.
Ground Components were an Australian soul, punk rock band. Formed December 2002 by Indra Adams on bass guitar, Joe McGuigan on lead vocals and guitar, Simon McGuigan on drums and Dallas Paxton on keyboards. Their debut album, An Eye for a Brow, a Tooth for a Pick, reached the ARIA Albums Chart. They disbanded in 2007.
Daddy Cool is an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne, Victoria in 1970 with the original line-up of Wayne Duncan, Ross Hannaford, Ross Wilson and Gary Young. Their debut single "Eagle Rock" was released in May 1971 and stayed at number 1 on the Australian singles chart for ten weeks. Their debut July 1971 LP Daddy Who? Daddy Cool also reached number 1 and became the first Australian album to sell more than 100,000 copies. The group's name came from the 1957 song "Daddy Cool" by US rock group The Rays. Daddy Cool included their version of this song on Daddy Who? Daddy Cool.
Eddy Current Suppression Ring are an Australian rock band formed in 2003. By 2004 their line-up was Daniel Young p.k.a. Danny Current on drums, his brother Michael Young p.k.a. Eddy Current on lead guitar and keyboards, Brendan Huntley p.k.a. Brendan Suppression on lead vocals and Brad Barry p.k.a. Rob Solid on bass guitar. They have released four studio albums, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Primary Colours, Rush to Relax and All in Good Time. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2008, Primary Colours was nominated for Best Rock Album. It won the Australian Music Prize of $30,000 for the band in March 2009. Rush to Relax peaked at number 20 on the ARIA Albums chart and was listed in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums (2010). At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010 it was nominated for Best Rock Album and Best Independent Release.
High Pass Filter were a live electro-dub band formed in Melbourne, Australia. The band was active from 1995–2006 and supported many major touring artists such as Beastie Boys, Blues Explosion, Tortoise, Fugazi, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, The Boredoms and Mad Professor.
John McAll is a pianist, composer, arranger and producer with experience ranging from jazz, pop, blues, rock contemporary classical, afrobeat and theatre.
Dirty Three is an Australian instrumental rock band, consisting of Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White (drums), which formed in 1992. Their 1996 album Horse Stories was voted by Rolling Stone as one of the top three albums of the year. Two of their albums have peaked into the top 50 on the ARIA Albums Chart, Ocean Songs (1998) and Toward the Low Sun (2012). During their career they have spent much of their time overseas when not performing together. Turner is based in Melbourne, White lives in New York, and Ellis in Paris. Australian rock music historian Ian McFarlane described them as providing a "rumbling, dynamic sound incorporated open-ended, improvisational, electric rock ... minus the jazz-rock histrionics". In October 2010, Ocean Songs was listed in the book 100 Best Australian Albums.
Teeth & Tongue were an Australian indie rock band formed in 2007 by Jessica Claire Cornelius, a New Zealand-born singer-songwriter and musician. The project has included other members, such as James Harvey on drums, Marc Regueiro-McKelvie on guitar and Damian Sullivan on bass guitar and synthesiser. Teeth & Tongue released four albums, Monobasic, Tambourine, Grids and Give Up on Your Health, before disbanding early in 2017. The stage name had also been used for Cornelius' solo performances, but since 2017 she has performed and released material under her own name and relocated to Los Angeles late that year.
Primary Colours is the second album by Australian garage punk band Eddy Current Suppression Ring. The album was recorded in a suburb of Melbourne over a 24-hour period in August 2007. The album was first released on Aarght! Records in Australia only on 5 May 2008, then on 9 September 2008 on Goner Records in the United States, and finally in the United Kingdom on Melodic Records on 17 August 2009. "Which Way to Go" was the only single released from Primary Colours.
Halfway is a rock band from Brisbane, Australia. As of 2023 the group have released eight studio albums, most recently On the Ghostline, with Hands of Lightning, released in August 2022. Previous to this the band released, Restless Dream (2021), which was a collaboration between Halfway and Aboriginal Australian elder, Bob Weatherall.
