Socialcam was a mobile social video application for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone, that was launched March 7, 2011 and ended October 28, 2015. [1] It allowed users to capture and share videos online and on mobile, as well as via Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. By July 2012, the application passed 16 million downloads and was acquired by Autodesk for $60 million. [2] Socialcam was founded by Michael Seibel, Ammon Bartram, and Guillaume Luccisano. Its facility was located in San Francisco, California, US. [3]
Socialcam was well known for the following functionality: applying filters to video, [4] applying themes and soundtracks to video, [5] and smooth integration with Facebook. [6] Socialcam's eventual goal was to replace the default camera app on all smartphones. [7]
Socialcam participated in the Winter 2012 class of Y Combinator [8] and raised funding from a large list of Silicon Valley and Hollywood angel investors. [9]
In 2012, a large number of brands used Socialcam to engage their social media audiences with video content including: Brooklyn Nets, Lipton Iced Tea, New York Jets, Sierra Mist, and General Electric. [10] By the end of 2013, none of these brands were still active on Socialcam. [11] A complete list of Socialcam brands was listed on the site's "brand leaderboard" feature. [12]
On July 9, 2012, the Washington Post announced a partnership with Socialcam, becoming Socialcam's official news partner for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. [13] Socialcam and the Washington Post worked together to create London Eyes - an interactive map of user generated videos taken in and around London during the olympic games. [14] Socialcam and the Washington Post teamed up again to cover the 2012 Democratic and Republican national conventions [15] [16] to create "Unconventional: Behind the scenes at conventions". [17]
Socialcam's popularity on Facebook suddenly increased in the spring of 2012, via unusually aggressive actions to induce contacts to join. It was criticized as "invasive" and a "bully" by many reviewers, for sharing what users were viewing without them realizing that that would happen. [18] [19] This also led to questions about whether Facebook was playing favorites with what content gets featured. [20] In response to criticism, Socialcam quickly made a number of changes to make its sharing functionality easier to understand. [21]
Loopt was a company based in Mountain View, California, United States which provided a service for smartphone users to share their location selectively with other people. The service supported iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Windows Phones. Loopt's services had more than five million registered users and partnerships with every major U.S. mobile phone carrier. Their applications offered a variety of privacy controls. In addition to its core features, users also had the ability to integrate Loopt with other social networks, including Facebook and Twitter.

Couple, formerly Pair, was a mobile app that provided a mobile messaging service for two people, especially romantic couples. Like many mobile phone messaging applications, Couple allows users to share text, photos, video and other content. It is a competitor to apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and KakaoTalk, but it is unique in that it is for communicating with exactly one other person. Couple is one of a slew of mobile applications that intentionally confine their communication to a small group, as opposed to large public or semi-public networks like Twitter.
ChatON was a global mobile communication service introduced by Samsung Electronics in September 2011. ChatON served more than 120 countries in 62 languages. ChatON was available on Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Windows Mobile (Korea), and Bada smartphones. Additionally, a web client was offered for access to the service via web browsers. Users could invite and register buddies via Facebook and Twitter as well as share ChatON content on Facebook. Among ChatON's unique features were allowing users to create Animation messages, Broadcast to send personal notices in a group chat room, and the Trunk which stores media files shared in chats. When a user logs in ChatON, the user's buddy list is available on any connected device.
Vine was an American short-form video hosting service where users could share six-second-long looping video clips. It was originally launched on January 24, 2013, by Vine Labs, Inc. Bought by Twitter in 2012 before its launch, the service was shut down on January 17, 2017 and the app was discontinued a few months later.
Pixorial was a cloud-based consumer photo sharing, video sharing and video editing platform. The company was formed in 2007 in Centennial, Colorado as a media conversion service. In 2013, Pixorial was chosen as one of two video storage companies to partner with the launch of Google Drive. Pixorial allows users to edit and share videos on social channels by connecting through their Pixorial account. On June 17, 2014, Pixorial announced that its services would no longer function as of a month later, July 18, 2014. The company has since signed a definite agreement with LifeLogger Technologies Corp. to be acquired.
Hike Messenger, also called Hike Sticker Chat, was an Indian freeware, cross-platform instant messaging (IM), Voice over IP (VoIP) application which was launched on 12 December, 2012 by Kavin Bharti Mittal and is now owned by Hike Private Limited. Hike worked offline through SMS and had multi-platform support. The app registration used a standard one time password (OTP) based authentication process. Hike is estimated at a value of $1.4 billion, with more than 100 million registered users and 350 employees.
