Somersetshire, was launched in 1810 on the River Thames as a West Indiaman. She made two voyages to Australia transporting convicts, and one in between with passengers. On the second convict transport voyage some convicts and guards planned a mutiny that her captain was able to foil. Somersetshire is last listed in 1844.

In between convict transport contracts, she made numerous other voyages, including a diarised (by "BJ" Barker Joseph Benson) voyage to Bombay (Mumbai) and back in 1838.

Somersetshire first appeared in Lloyd's Register (LR) in the volume for 1810. [3]

Captain Robert Haly (or Haley, or Hayley) received a letter of marque for Somersetshire on 9 March 1811. [1]

On Monday 7 October 1811 Somersetshire arrived in the Downs from Jamaica. The evening before she had warded off an attack near Dover by three French privateers. [4]

First convict voyage (1814)

Under the command of Alexander Scott, Somersetshire sailed from Spithead, England on 10 May 1814, and arrived at Port Jackson on 17 October. [5] She embarked 200 male convicts, one of whom died on the voyage. [6] Somersetshire left Port Jackson on 5 December bound for Bengal. [7]

Passenger transport - London to Port Adelaide (1839)

Somersetshire, Captain John Jackson, brought 234 passengers to Port Adelaide. She had left London on 18 April 1839 and she arrived there on 28 August.[ citation needed ] One of her passengers was Thomas Boutflower Bennett. [8]

Second convict voyage (1841-42)

Somersetshire sailed from Plymouth on 20 December 1841, under the command of Charles Motley (or Mottley), and arrived at Hobart Town on 30 May 1842. [9] She embarked 219 male convicts; one died on the voyage. [10] One officer and 30 rank-and-file being sent out to join the 51st King's Own Light Infantry provided the guard. [11]

What makes this voyage notable was the mutiny plot that some prisoners developed during the voyage. The mutineers' plan was to murder the officers, place in the ship's boats those who would not join the mutiny, and then sail to South America. The convicts succeeded in getting several of the guard to join their plot. [11]

It is not clear how the officers discovered the plot, but Captain Motley decided to put into Table Bay. There a two-week court martial tried the four soldiers who were part of the planned mutiny, with one of the four testifying against his companions. The court martial sentenced the ring leader to death by firing squad, and the other two to transportation. (Surry picked up six prisoners at the Cape when she stopped there later that year and the two mutinous soldiers may have been among them.) Somersetshire left the Cape on 12 April and encountered no further issues on her voyage. [11]

Somersetshire arrived in Sydney on 28 June, having sailed from Hobart in ballast. [12]

Somersetshire, with Mottley, master, is last listed in Lloyd's Register in 1844.

Atlantic was launched in 1783. She made one voyage from England to Australia in 1791 carrying convicts. Later, she made one voyage for the East India Company (EIC). Subsequently she sailed to Smyrna, Surinam, and Gibraltar, before she disappeared from records in 1810.

Minerva was a merchantman launched in 1773 in the East Indies. She traded there for more than 20 years before she made three voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). The first EIC voyage was from 1796 to 1798. In 1799, she transported convicts from Ireland to Australia while under charter to the EIC. From Australia she sailed to Bengal, and then back to Britain. She underwent repairs in 1802 and then traveled to St Helena and Bengal for the EIC. She was lost in 1805 or 1806 under circumstances that are currently unclear.

Canada was a merchant ship launched at Shields in 1800. She made five trips transporting convicts to Australia. On two of those trips she was also under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). When she was not transporting convicts Canada traded with the West Indies, and with Canada until c.1832.

Hercules was a sailing ship built in 1801 at South Shields, England. She made one trip transporting convicts to Port Jackson. She made two trips for the British East India Company (EIC), and was homeward bound from the second of these when the French privateer Napoleon captured her off the Cape of Good Hope.

Indian was a merchant ship launched at Shields in 1810. Her first voyage was to transport convict convicts to Australia. She then became a West Indiaman. She wrecked with heavy loss of life on 8 December 1817.

Providence was a merchant ship built at Calcutta, India, and launched in 1807. She made four voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), on one of which she delivered convicts to New South Wales. The ship was scuttled at St Martin's, Isles of Scilly in 1833 after grounding while on a voyage from London to Bombay, India.

Minstrel was launched at Hull in 1811. She transported convicts to Australia in 1812 and again in 1825. Between these voyages she traded east of the Cape of Good Hope under a license from the British East India Company (EIC). In 1829 she brought immigrants from England to the Swan River Colony. She then traded widely, including across the Atlantic. Minstrel foundered in March 1851.

Baring was a three-decker East Indiaman that made six voyages to India for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1802 and 1814. Her owners then sold her and under new owners she made two voyages transporting convicts to Australia. Her last appearance in Lloyd's Register is in 1820.

Guildford was a two-decker merchant ship launched in 1810. She transported convicts to New South Wales. Of her eight voyages delivering convicts, for three she was under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). She underwent major repairs in 1819, her hull was sheathed in copper in 1822; in 1825 she received new wales, top sides and deck, the copper was repaired and other repairs. Guildford was lost without a trace in 1831.

Brothers was built in Whitby, England in 1815. She made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC), and two transporting convicts to Australia. Afterwards she traded across the Atlantic, primarily to Quebec, and was last listed in 1837.

Fanny was a merchant ship built on the River Thames, England in 1810. She was a West Indiaman but made one voyage transporting convicts from England to Australia. On her return she reverted to trading with the West Indies. She apparently burnt in 1817, but may have been salvaged. She was last listed in 1822.

Phoenix was a merchant vessel launched in 1810 The British East India Company (EIC) chartered her to make one voyage to Madras and Bengal between 1820 and 1821. She then made one voyage transporting convicts to Tasmania in 1822, and two to New South Wales, one in 1826 and one in 1828. She was wrecked in 1829.

Tyne was launched in 1807 in Rotherhithe. She spent the first part of her career as a West Indiaman. However, in 1810–1811 she made a voyage to India for the British East India Company (EIC) as an "extra" ship, i.e., under charter. Thereafter, with a change of owners, she traded with the Far East under a license issued by the EIC. Then in 1818 she made a voyage to Port Jackson, New South Wales transporting convicts. A fire destroyed her in 1828 in Bombay Harbour.

<i>Minerva</i> (1805 ship) British merchant and convict vessel (1805–1826)

Minerva was launched at Lancaster, Lancashire, in 1805. Following trading with Central and South America, she made two voyages under charter to the British East India Company (EIC) between 1811 and 1814. She also made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia between 1818 and 1824, one to Van Diemen's Land and three voyages to New South Wales. She was broken up in 1826.

Boyne was launched at Calcutta in 1807. In 1809 she sailed to England. She was sold to the Danes, but by 1811 was under English ownership under the name Moffat. She then made seven voyages as a "regular ship" for the British East India Company (EIC). After the EIC exited its maritime activities in 1833–34, Moffat made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia: one voyage to Port Jackson and three to Van Diemen's Land. She also made at least one voyage carrying immigrants to South Australia, and later regularly traded between Liverpool and Bombay. She was last listed in 1856.

<i>Fairlie</i> (1810 ship)

Fairlie was launched at Calcutta in 1810 and sailed to England. There she became a regular ship for the British East India Company (EIC). Including her voyage to England, she made four voyages for the EIC. From around 1821 on she became a Free Trader, continuing to trade with India under a license from the EIC. She also made two voyages transporting convicts to New South Wales (1834), and Tasmania (1852). She made several voyages carrying immigrants to South Australia, New South Wales, and British Guiana. She foundered in November 1865.

Mangles was built in Calcutta in 1803 and immediately sailed for England. Including that voyage, she made a total of six voyages as an "extra ship" for the British East India Company (EIC). Between her first as second voyages for the EIC a French privateer captured her. Mangles also made nine voyages transporting convicts to Australia: eight voyages to Port Jackson, one to Hobart Town, and one in which she delivered some convicts to Port Jackson but carried most of her charges to Norfolk Island. She was last listed in 1844.
