Sonni Gwanle Tyoden (born 22 September 1950) is a Nigerian professor of political science,educational administrator,and politician who served as the deputy governor of Plateau State from 2015 to 2023. He is a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos. [1] [2]
Tyoden was born on 22 September 1950. He attended Boys' Secondary School,Gindiri in Plateau State,Northern Nigeria,where he obtained the West Africa Senior School Certificate. He later proceeded to the University of Ibadan where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Degree in Political Science. [3] He obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc) and a Doctorate (Ph.D) Degree in International Relations and Political Economy from the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom. [4] [5] [6]
Tyoden began his career in 1978,as an Assistant Secretary to Plateau State Government Ministry of Establishment. He later became a member of academic staff at the University of Jos,where he became a full Professor in 1990. [7] After Tyoden became a Professor in 1990,he was appointed,Head of the Department of Political Science,University of Abuja [8] He returned to his alma mater,the University of Jos in 2000,and became Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2001,a position he held till 2005. [9] He was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos on 12 July 2006,a position he held until 11 June 2011. He contributed significantly to the development of the University. The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is a Federal higher institution located in Maiduguri,the capital city of Borno State in Northeast Nigeria. He was regarded as one of the best Vice-Chancellor the University Community will ever have.

The 2019 Plateau State gubernatorial election in Nigeria occurred on March 9,2019. Incumbent APC Governor Simon Lalong won re-election for a second term,defeating PDP Jerry Useni and several minor party candidates.
The 2015 Plateau State gubernatorial election occurred on April 11,2015. APC's Simon Lalong won election for a first term,defeating Gyang Pwajok of the PDP and four minor party candidates. Lalong won in 11 LGAs,receiving 51.83% of the vote,while Pwajok won the remaining six of the 17 LGAs of the state,receiving 47.76% of the total votes,trailing behind Lalong with 44,386 votes margin.
The 2023 Plateau State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023,to elect the Governor of Plateau State,concurrent with elections to the Plateau State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Simon Lalong is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.
