Sooriyan FM is a privately owned Tamil radio station in Sri Lanka run by ABC Radio Networks started in 1998. It covers the whole island. The network runs sister stations Hiru FM and Shaa FM in Sinhala and Gold FM and Sun FM in English.

Sooriyan FM rated the number one Tamil radio channel as per the latest Listenership survey.[ citation needed ] According to LMRB (Lanka Marketing Research Bureau) ratings Sooriyan FM is continuing to lead the market and audience ratings in the Tamil radio industry in Sri Lanka for the 19th consecutive year.

Asia Broadcasting Corporation Private Limited, a part of Rayynor Silva Holdings the owning company of Hiru FM/Gold FM/Sooriyan FM/Sun FM/Shaa FM, set up 12 years ago, revolutionized the Media industry setting up Sri Lanka's First Ever Private Tamil Channel -Sooriyan FM, Sri Lanka's First Ever English Oldies Channel -Gold FM, Sri Lanka's First Sinhala Youth Channel Shaa FM along with Sri Lanka's number one Sinhala radio channel Hiru FM and Sri Lanka's youth English trend setter Sun FM.

The company is managed by Mr. Rayynor Silva, one of the most senior radio personalities in today's broadcasting field in Sri Lanka. His experience of 18 years in the 19-year-old private radio broadcasting Industry has given him an invaluable in-depth insight of the industry. Currently, he is successfully steering Sri Lanka's No. 1 Sinhala radio channel - Hiru FM, the Number 1 Tamil radio channel - Sooriyan FM, the Number 1 English channel – Gold FM, Sri Lanka's hottest English station Sun FM and Sri Lanka's hottest Sinhala station Shaa FM.

He launched the first ever private Tamil radio channel in Sri Lanka - "Sooriyan FM", The first ever English 1970s oldies channel in Sri Lanka - "Gold FM", Sri Lanka's First youth channel Shaa FM, thus revolutionizing the Sri Lankan radio industry.

He was also awarded the highest media honorary title and honorary award of "Vishwa Keerthi Maadya Shoori Jana Prasaada" in honor of the services rendered during the Vanni Humanitarian Operations, last year.[ citation needed ]

Rayynor Silva was also the youngest President in the history of the IAA (International Advertising Association) Sri Lanka Chapter. It was during his tenure that the Advertising Awards "Chillies" was formed in collaboration with the 4A's.

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) came into existence on 5 January 1967 when Radio Ceylon became a public corporation. Dudley Senanayake who was the Prime Minister of Ceylon in 1967 ceremonially opened the newly established Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation along with Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa and the Director General of the CBC, Neville Jayaweera.The first board of Directors of CBC consisted of Mr. Neville Jayaweera (CCS), Mr.A.L.M.Hashim, Mr.Dharmasiri Kuruppu, Mr. K.A.G. Perera and Mr. Devar Surya Sena. After the first board meeting it was decided unanimously to appoint the chairman, Mr.Jayaweera, as the new Director General.

Mass media in Sri Lanka

Mass media of Sri Lanka consist of several different types of communications media: television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and Web sites. State and private media operators provide services in the main languages Sinhala, Tamil and English. The government owns two major TV stations, radio networks operated by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), and newspaper titles in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

Radio broadcasting in Sri Lanka dates to 1923. Radio broadcasting, like other forms of media in Sri Lanka, is generally divided along linguistic lines with state and private media operators providing services in Sinhala, Tamil, and English language.

Independent Television Network Sri Lankan state-owned broadcaster

Independent Television Network-ITN is a Sri Lankan state governed television and radio broadcaster located in Wickramasinghepura, Battaramulla, Sri Lanka. It is a Shrama Abhimani Award winner , broadcasts content to a wide demographic within Sri Lanka as well as the expatriate community. The programmes are broadcast in three languages: Sinhala, Tamil, and English. The ITN broadcast coverage extends to 99% of the island of Sri Lanka.

The Official Language Act No.33 of 1956, commonly referred to as the Sinhala Only Act, was an act passed in the Parliament of Ceylon in 1956. The act replaced English with Sinhala as the sole official language of Ceylon, with the exclusion of Tamil.

Udaya TV Kannada Entertainment Channel from Sun network

Udaya TV is a regional Kannada language Indian cable television station. It is also the first Kannada general entertainment channel in India. The channel is part of the Chennai-based Sun Network headquartered at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Udaya TV is telecast in several nations, including India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada and the United States. Udaya TV completed its 25th anniversary in the television industry on 1 June 2019.

The Buddhist is the first Buddhist television channel for Sri Lanka. The Buddhist channel studios are located at Sri Sambodhi Vihara (Temple) that is situated in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is available on the Sri Lankan Direct to Home satellite television services Dialog TV and Dish TV. The service also operates on PEO TV and cable TV. The aim of the channel is to telecast valuable religious and cultural programming in the three main languages of Sri Lanka, English, Sinhala and Tamil. The founder and the Chairman of the Buddhist TV is the most Ven. Daranagama Kusaladhamma Thero. On 29 June 2007, the channel was officially launched by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva and head priest of the Asgiriya chapter in Sri Lanka.

Sunrise Radio Group Limited was a UK radio broadcaster, and ran Sunrise Radio. The company also used to own London Media Company Limited. In January 2014, Sunrise Radio Limited, owners of Sunrise Radio 1, Sunrise Radio 3, Time 107.5 and Tristar 96.6, fell into administration, and were acquired for an estimated £2m on 4 February 2014.

FM99 Sri Lanka was a Sri Lankan radio station. FM99 started broadcasting on 13 June 1993, as the first private radio channel in Sri Lanka, under the license granted to then director Livy Wijemanne. The radio station was shut down on 31 January 1996 for separation of its mediums. The station broadcast in three languages on the same channel, at different times of day:

Hiru FM is a Sinhala radio station in Sri Lanka owned by ABC Radio Networks. It covers the whole island.

FM Derana Radio station in Colombo, Sri Lanka

FM Derana is Free-to-air Sinhala radio channel in Sri Lanka. Established in March 2009, FM Derana broadcasts 24hrs a day and it covers over 95% of the Island. Designed to appeal to a broad cross-section of listeners, FM Derana is leveraged on the strength and success of Derana TV, a strategic consolidation that will revolutionize the media landscape with its simple yet highly entertaining format. Currently FM Derana holds the No 1 position among all radio channels in Sri Lanka. The channel has being maintain this No 1 position for the past three years in a row. FM Derana managed to achieve this No. 01 position in just 8 years from its inception. There are 37 channels currently operating in Sri Lanka of which 30 channels are in the Sinhala Language. There are little over 50 local channels in operation currently in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Rūpavāhinī Corporation, also known as Jathika Rupavahini, is the national television network of Sri Lanka.

Vivienne de Silva Boralessa was a Sri Lankan singer known particularly for her Buddhist devotional music. Her fame peaked in the 1950s, in what is known as Sri Lanka's 'gramophone era'.

Sri Lankan Hip Hop is a part of the Asian hip hop culture. This multilingual genre features Sinhala, Tamil and English.

George Rathnawali Kumarasiri Miguel [Sinhala]), popularly as Rathnawali Kekunawela, was an award-winning actress in Sri Lankan cinema, theater and television. One of the earliest pillars in Sri Lankan radio drama history, Kekunawela had a career spanned for more than six decades. She is better known as "Muwan Palesse Menike" due to popular radio play.

Umaria Sinhawansa Sri Lankan singer

Umaria Binthy Ayesha Sinhawansa, popularly as Umaria Sinhawansa, is a Sri Lankan pop, R&B and jazz singer. She is the youngest musician to be ever awarded A-Grade by Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Umaria began her music career at age 11 in the 2005, performing with her sister at various stages. She made her debut as a playback singer in the film Asai Man Piyabanna. And also she has won silver awards at Pan Asia Music International Music Competition and the Crimea Music Fest international competition.
