Sophia Elizabeth Gennusa (born October 20, 2003) is an American actress most known for playing the title role of Matilda Wormwood, in the original Broadway cast of Matilda the Musical , [1] [2] [3] and Hannah Shepherd in The Enemy Within . [4] [5]

Career

Gennusa is best known for debuting the role of Matilda Wormwood in the Broadway production of Matilda [1] [2] [3] alongside Bailey Ryon, [2] Oona Laurence, [2] and Milly Shapiro [2] at the Shubert Theatre. [2] She returned to Broadway in 2015 for the new musical Doctor Zhivago at the Broadway Theatre. [6] [7] It closed after about three weeks, with an additional month of previews. [8]

Gennusa frequently performs in benefit concerts and cabarets, and as of 2016 is the singer of the theme song for Sesame Street. She sang on an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver in 2015.

In 2019, Gennusa began a recurring role on The Enemy Within as Hannah Shepherd. [4] [5]

Personal life

Gennusa lives in Westchester County with her parents. [9]

Awards

She performed in Matilda as Matilda Wormwood until December 21, 2013. She later won a Tony Honor with Oona Laurence, Milly Shapiro, and Bailey Ryon for their outstanding Broadway debut in the show. [10] She was also nominated for a Grammy Award for the cast album of Matilda. [11]

Roald Dahl's Matilda, also known simply as Matilda and Matilda the Musical, is a musical with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly. It is based on the 1988 novel Matilda by Roald Dahl. The musical's narrative centres on Matilda Wormwood, a precocious five-year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis, who loves reading, overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life. After a twelve-week trial run staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) at Stratford-upon-Avon from November 2010 to January 2011, it received its West End premiere on 24 November 2011 at the Cambridge Theatre and its Broadway premiere on 11 April 2013 at the Shubert Theatre.

Robert Hugh Carvel is a British actor. He has twice won a Laurence Olivier Award: for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his role as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda the Musical, and for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance as Rupert Murdoch in Ink. For the latter role, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play.

Milly Shapiro is an American actress and singer. She starred in the 2018 horror film Hereditary. In 2021, Shapiro and Spencer Arjang co-created the band AFTERxCLASS.

Bailey Ryon is an American actress from Southern Pennsylvania. She is known for originating the role of Matilda in Matilda the Musical on Broadway with fellow actresses Milly Shapiro, Oona Laurence, and Sophia Gennusa. She performed in Matilda from March 2013 to January 11, 2014. Her role in Matilda won her a Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre which she won jointly with her fellow Matildas. The Original Broadway Cast recording of Matilda the Musical was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album where she was listed as a principal soloist along with Bertie Carvel, Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Milly Shapiro and Lauren Ward. Before making her Broadway debut in Matilda the Musical, Bailey was Cindy Lou Who in the touring production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Bailey graduated from Susquehannock High School in 2020 before studying musical theatre at James Madison University.

Gabriella Grace Pizzolo is an American actress and singer. They first made their breakthrough on Broadway for their portrayal as Matilda in Matilda the Musical (2013) and Fun Home (2015). In 2019, they received widespread recognition for their role as Suzie Bingham in Stranger Things.

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, or simply Matilda the Musical, is a 2022 musical film directed by Matthew Warchus from a screenplay by Dennis Kelly, based on the stage musical of the same name by Tim Minchin and Kelly, which in turn was based on the 1988 novel Matilda by Roald Dahl. It is the second film adaptation of the novel, following Matilda (1996). Tam Mutu is an English stage and screen actor. He began his career on the West End in the early 2000s. He was part of the original West End production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies (2010–2011) before starring in the revivals of Les Misérables (2013–2014) and City of Angels (2015). That same year he starred in the original Broadway musical Doctor Zhivago. He returned to Broadway in 2019 with Moulin Rouge! The Musical; for his supporting role of the Duke of Monroth he was nominated for a Grammy Award. On screen, he had a recurring role on the Netflix show Medici.
