Soraya Aracena is an anthropologist and curator from the Dominican Republic, who specialises in the religious and cultural practices of black Caribbean communities. In additional to her research she has also founded cultural festivals and an ethnographic video archive.

Biography

Aracena obtained first studied communication at undergraduate level. She graduated from the MA in Studies of the Greater Antilles from the Centre for Advanced Studies of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean in 1997. [1] In 1990 she worked as part of the team curating Dominican and Haitian artefacts for the creation of the collection of the Museum of the Americas. [1] In 1994 she founded Los Festivales Anthropológicos de Cultura Afroamericanas (The Anthropological Festivals of Afro-American Cultures), which sort to enhance understanding and showcase the importance of black culture in hispanophone Caribbean countries. [1] She also established the Chango Prieto online video library, which records and archives ethnographic material relating to the Dominican Republic. [1]

Known for her research on the black cultural practices in the country, on particular work on Dominican Gagá and its history, Aracena has also worked on traditions associated with St Michael. [2] [1] [3] [4] She was also worked on the role of culinary traditions in diasporic communities. [5] She is also an expert on the history of merengue. [6] Research collaborators have included Jose Francisco Alegria, with whom she undertook field work which led to publication on voodoo in the Dominican Republic. [1] She has been outspoken on the need for greater recognition of the archaeologist Fernando Morbán Laucer's work in Dominican archaeology, especially at the Cueva de las Maravillas National Park. In 2022 she was a member of the judging panel for the National Carnival Parade. [9] In the same year she advocated for the establishment of a specialist college to teach carnival practices, including textile art. [10]

Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal is a baseball stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It is the only stadium in the Caribbean region to host two different baseball teams, Tigres del Licey and Leones del Escogido. It currently hosts local sporting events and concerts and held the basketball games during the 2003 Pan American Games. It is known as "La Media Naranja" for its characteristic orange roof. The arena is also used in the Miss Dominican Republic Pageant. It also hosted games from the 2010 World Youth Women's Handball Championship.

Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium is open-air multi-purpose stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Opened in 1974 for the XII Central American & Caribbean Games and renovated 2003 Pan American Games is the largest stadium in the Dominican Republic used mostly for football and track and field and as a music venue. The stadium has a sporting events' capacity of 27,000 people, though it has seen crowds of 35,000. For concerts, its stated capacity is 50,000 people.

Yuderqui Maridalia Contreras, also known as Yudelkis Contreras, is a Dominican Republican weightlifter. She went to the 2008 Summer Olympics where she was 5th. After the Games, she was accused of failing a doping control, but the case ended with her name cleared. She was one of the two athletes that represented her home country in weightlifting at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She failed her three attempts in the snatch stage ending with no mark.

The GranArena del Cibao Dr. Oscar Gobaira, formerly known as the Palacio de los Deportes, is a multi-purpose arena in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, built in 1978. The arena has a capacity of 8,768 seats, consisting of 7,000 regular seats, 668 comfortable armchairs and 1,100 luxury seats that are fully reclinable. The arena has a modern acoustic system, which has 16 speakers and 10 monitors. The arena was remodeled for the Dominican Republic National Basketball Team in accordance with the requirements of FIBA. Jean Alain Rodríguez Sánchez is a Dominican lawyer and politician former Attorney General of the Dominican Republic. He was appointed to the position of President Danilo Medina. Before becoming Attorney General, Rodríguez Sánchez served as the executive director of the CEI-RD (2012-2016). He is a member of the Central Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party, the previous governing political party in Dominican Republic until August 16, 2020.

Entre Mar y Palmeras is the second live album of the Dominican artist Juan Luis Guerra and 4.40. It was released on June 18, 2022 along with special concert, an open-air and audience-free concert, broadcast by HBO special, premiere on June 3, 2021, performing the songs and was recorded at the Esmeralda Beach, Miches in the Dominican Republic. It contains 16 live versions of hits and was directed by Guerra's oldest son, Jean Guerra. The album won Best Long Form Music Video at the 22nd Annual Latin Grammy Awards and Best Merengue/Bachata Album at the 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards. Also, it was nominated for Album of the year at the 2022 Lo Nuestro Awards.

La Travesia World Tour is the world tour by the Dominican superstar Juan Luis Guerra Tour promote his 10th studio album La Llave de Mi Corazón. It was his longest tour at the time and consisted in six legs, 54 shows and visited United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia, where his made his debut in Japan. Also, it was his biggest international tour in more than a decade, marking his first time in many years that he performed in countries such as Ecuador, Paraguay and Costa Rica since the Bachata Rosa World Tour (1991-92). The tour kick off on July 12, 2008, and ended on December 5, 2009, in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
