Soundarya Kumar Pradhan (born 13 December 1999) [1] is an Indian para chess player from Odisha. The visually challenged chess player was selected for the Indian team that took part in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games. He won the Men's Team Rapid VI-B1 gold medal on 28 October 2023 along with Darpan Inani and Ashwin Makwana. He also won a silver medal in the individual event. [2] [3] [4]

Early life and education

Pradhan was born in Boden, Nuapada district, Odisha. [5] He is born to Rabi Ranjan Pradhan and Jayanthi Pradhan. After his schooling at the Boden Government High School, he studied at the Biju Patnaik College, where his father works as a lecturer. [1] Currently, he is studying B.Tech. in computer science at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur. He has Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), a rare inherited eye disorder, from birth. He also teaches online chess to students in USA [5] and is a coach at the Lucknow-based Chess Club Black and White (CCBW). [5] [6] He was felicitated by the chief minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik with a cash award of Rs.1.5 crore. [2] [7] His brother Prachurya is also a visually challenged chess player. He learnt his basics from his uncle Keshranjan, a former National B chess player. [8]

Career

Pradhan was also part of the Indian team that won silver medal in the Men's Rapid Team Chess in the 2018 Asian Para Games held in Jakarta. [5] In April 2022, he won the National Chess Championship for the visually challenged and made it to the Indian team for the World Team Championship. He won a gold at the 9th IBCA World Team Chess Championship for the Blind and Visually Impaired 2022 held at Ohrid, Macedonia in June 2022. [8] [9] In one of his first tournaments at the Junior National Chess Championship for Blind in January 2012 at Mumbai, he finished at the best under-13 player. [1] In the 16th AICFB National Chess Championship for Visually Challenged in March 2023, he finished third. [10]

Darpan Inani is a prolific blind Indian chess player and a Chartered Accountant from Vadodara. He won 2 gold medals - individual as well as team gold medal - at Para Asian Games held in China in October, 2023. He had a career peak FIDE elo rating of 2135, the highest ever elo rating to have been attained by any visually impaired player from India as of January, 2024. He won a bronze medal on his respective board in the 16th World Chess Olympiad for visually impaired held in Greece in 2021. He was also a bronze medalist at the 2013 World Junior Championship in Belgrade. He is the youngest player to have ever won the National blind chess championships. He is the only Indian visually impaired chess player to have ever won international first prize at the Creon Open chess tournament in France in August 2018. This was a historic moment for Indian chess when a visually impaired player won first prize in international open sighted tournament in his rating category. He is honoured with the Yuva Ratna award by All India Marwari Yuva Manch in April 2018 in Siliguri, West Bengal. He is the recipient of the Navratna Award - 2018 awarded by Yuma Television. He has featured in a commercial for HDFC Life.

Rakshitha Raju, a visually challenged runner from India, is a para athlete from Chikkamagalur in Karnataka. She takes part in the women's 1500 metres T11 category. She was selected for the Indian team that took part in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games. She won the gold medal Asian Para Games behind China's Shanshan He. Later, Shanshan was disqualified and Raju was promoted to take the gold medal. She clocked 5 minutes, 21.45 seconds. Being a visually handicapped runner, Rakshitha completed the race with the help of a guide Rahul Balakrishna.

Himanshi Bhaveshbhai Rathi is an Indian para chess player from Gujarat. She was part of the Indian team for the women's chess B1 category at the 2022 Asian Para Games at Hangzhou, China. She is a visually challenged chess player. Along with Sanskruti More, Vruthi Jain, the trio won the women's team rapid VI-B1 bronze medal.

Sanskruti Vikas More is an Indian para chess player. She was part of the Indian team for the women's chess B1 category at the 2022 Asian Para Games at Hangzhou, China. She is a visually challenged chess player. Along with Himanshi Rathi, Vruthi Jain, she won the women's team rapid VI-B1 bronze medal at the Asiad 2022.

Lalitha Killaka is a para athlete from Andhra Pradesh. She was part of the Indian team at the 2022 Asian Para Games at Hangzhou, China. She won a silver medal finishing second behind Rakhitha Raju in the women 1500m T11 on 25 October 2023.

Ashwin Kanchanbhai Makwana is an Indian para chess player from Gujarat. The visually challenged chess player was selected for the Indian team that took part in the 2022 Asian Para Games, Hangzhou, China. He won the Men's Team Rapid VI-B1 gold medal on 28 October 2023 along with Darpan Inani and Soundarya Pradhan. He also won a bronze medal in the individual event on the same day.
