South Hagerstown High School is located at 1101 South Potomac Street, in Hagerstown, Maryland, United States. The current principal is Rodney Gayman. The 164,000 square-foot school is part of the Washington County Public Schools system and has an official capacity of 1240. [1]

Background

South Hagerstown High School opened its doors in the fall of 1956. The many buildings of South High were planned by Washington, D.C. architects McLeod & Ferrara, and they were built by Norman S. Early and Son of Hagerstown. The architectural design of the school won first place in a national competition that year. The school was dedicated to the service of youth and the community.

The South Hagerstown Indoor Percussion won the 2015 KIDA(Keystone Indoor Drill Association) [2] Championship. This is the 5th time in 33 years and is the first win since 2000. [3]

South Hagerstown High School sports teams have won 4 state championships. They have won two in baseball (1996 and 2003), one in basketball (1974), and one in boys outdoor track and field (2018). [4]

Robotics Team

The South Hagerstown High School Robotics team began the 2012-2013 school year. [5] It is one of the largest teams in the nation and the school hosts several competitions each year. [6] The Rebel Robotics team has qualified for the worlds competition in 7 of 8 years since the 2015-2016 season (only not qualifying in the 2018-2019 season). [7] [8] [9] [10] During the 2017-2018 season, one of the teams was ranked 19th in the world at one point. [11] [12] During the 2022-2023 season, several teams qualified for worlds, with one team (9080S - "Rebellious Misfits") winning the states competition; the first South High team to do so. [13]

Robofest is an autonomous robotics competition for 4th - 12th graders. It is similar to FIRST Lego League (FLL), but while FLL limits the student's robots to Lego Mindstorms robots, Robofest allows the student to use any robotics system, parts, materials, or even custom electronics, in some of the events. Note that FLL students are required to use parts manufactured by Lego only, preventing the use of such aids as string or glue. Another important difference is that Robofest games have UTF components. Students must solve the unveiled tasks and factors within 30 minutes work-time without external help. Lawrence Tech's Robofest was founded by Computer Science Professor Dr. Chan-Jin Chung in 1999–2000 academic year and is sponsored by Lawrence Technological University and other sponsors. LTU's Robofest is also held internationally, in countries including Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, England, France, Ghana, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Kenya, Lebanon, Macau, Malawi, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, and UAE. Teams who win their regional event are welcome to participate at the worldwide tournament held at Lawrence Technological University in Michigan. ROBOFEST is a registered trademark of Lawrence Technological University. Robofest is one of the largest University led robotics competitions in the world for pre college students.

Smithsburg High School was constructed in 1965 on 66 North Main Street in the town of Smithsburg, Maryland, United States. The school is part of the Washington County Public Schools system. It shares a campus with Smithsburg Middle School and, across the street, Smithsburg Elementary School. The current principal is Tim Eskridge.

The Tournament of Bands (TOB), also known as Tournament of Bands / Tournament Indoor Association (TOB/TIA), is an American school band association and governing body that sanctions marching band, color guard, and drumline, competitions in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States. VEX Robotics is a robotics program for elementary through university students and a subset of Innovation First International. The VEX Robotics competitions and programs are managed by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (RECF). In April 2018, VEX Robotics Competition was named the largest robotics competition in the world by Guinness World Records.

The Robotics Education & Competition Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization best known for managing competitions and programs for the VEX Robotics Competition. Over 1.1 million students have participated in RECF programs around the world. The organization’s mission is to provide more students with the opportunity to engage in STEM.
