South Kitsap School District No. 402 is the second largest public school district in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. It serves the city of Port Orchard, a portion of the city of Bremerton and the southern area of the county (360 square miles). The district is the largest employer in Port Orchard. [2]
In May 2011, the district had an enrollment of approximately 9,830 students. [3]
The district is governed by a board of five directors elected from geographical sub-districts. Each director is elected for a term of four years. Board meetings are open to the public held on the first and third Wednesday of each month. [4]
The superintendent serves as Secretary to the Board and provides day-to-day leadership and management to the district. South Kitsap School District has selected Bev Cheney, a former SKSD superintendent, to serve as interim for the 2012-13 school year after the previous superintendent, Dave LaRose, accepted a position as superintendent of Culver City (California) Unified School District.
The district hired Michelle Reid, 53, who is currently assistant superintendent of Port Angeles School District to replace Cheney after the 2012-13 school year. [5]

The county, formed out of King County and Jefferson County on January 16, 1857, is named for Chief Kitsap of the Suquamish Tribe. Originally named Slaughter County, it was soon renamed.

Bremerton is connected to downtown Seattle by two ferries: a 60-minute ferry that carries both vehicles and walk-on passengers, and a 28-minute Fast Ferry that carries passengers and a limited number of bicycles.
Port Orchard is a city in and the county seat of Kitsap County, Washington, United States. It is located 13 miles (21 km) due west of West Seattle and is connected to Seattle and Vashon Island via the Washington State Ferries run to Southworth. It is named after Port Orchard, the strait that separates Bainbridge Island from the Kitsap Peninsula.

State Route 160 (SR 160) is a 7.47-mile-long (12.02 km) long state highway serving Kitsap and King counties in the U.S. state of Washington. The highway begins at an interchange with SR 16 in Port Orchard and travels east to the Southworth ferry terminal, where the route continues onto a ferry to Vashon Heights, the former southern terminus of SR 339, and further east to end at the Fauntleroy ferry terminal in Seattle.
State Route 166 (SR 166) is a 5.13-mile (8.26 km) long state highway serving the city of Port Orchard within Kitsap County in the U.S. state of Washington. The highway begins at an interchange with SR 16 west of Port Orchard and travels along the Sinclair Inlet to Downtown Port Orchard and ends as Mile Hill Drive at Whitter Avenue near the eastern city limits. SR 166 was originally a branch of State Road 14 and later Primary State Highway 14 (PSH 14) before being designated as SR 160 after the 1964 highway renumbering. SR 160 was moved south in 1993 and the old alignment through Port Orchard became SR 166, which was extended in 2010 to the eastern city limits.
