The Southwest District is a high school athletic conference of the Virginia High School League that includes schools from southwestern Virginia, United States. The Southwest District was established in the former AA Region IV.
The AA Highlands District dissolved in 2007, with Abingdon and Marion joining the Southwest District. VHSL schools are placed into groups depending on size (formerly A, AA, and AAA), then each group was divided into its own regions, then districts. The system changed in 2013 to prevent the formation of very large regions for smaller schools, which are often rural. The AA Southwest District had several changes for the 2013–2014 school year during the overall VHSL realignment. Carroll County, a member of the new Group 4A, moved to the AA River Ridge District. Virginia High School and Lebanon High School joined from the dissolved A Clinch Mountain District. Graham High School recently joined the district after 6 years with the A Mountain Empire District due to the new alignment plan mapped out by the VHSL.
Abingdon is a member of the new Group 3A while the other schools are members of the new Group 2A. Abingdon left the Southwest District in the 2017 - 2018 School Year for the new Mountain 7 District. These schools are part of the new region system after conferences fell by the wayside. Region 2D is the new classification.
In the 2021-2022 school year, Lebanon briefly moved down to Region 1D and into the Hogoheegee district before rejoining the Southwest District and Region 2D in the 2023-2024 school year.

The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is the principal sanctioning organization for interscholastic athletic competition among public high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The VHSL first sponsored debate and also continues to sponsor state championships in several academic activities.
The AA Northwestern District is a high school conference in the state of Virginia that includes Frederick County and Warren County. The Northwestern District member schools compete in Region II with the schools from the AA Dulles District, AA Jefferson District, and AA Evergreen District.
The 4A Dulles District is a high school conference in the state of Virginia that includes schools from Northern Virginia, with all of its full-time members from Loudoun County. 4A is the third largest enrollment class of the Virginia High School League and is typically very competitive in Virginia high school sports.

Accordingly, the Northern Region was eliminated, while the districts were retained for regular season competition.

The AA Highlands District was a high school conference of the Virginia High School League that included schools from Southwest Virginia, mostly in the Bristol and Kingsport areas. The schools of the Highlands District competed in AA Region IV with the schools in the AA Piedmont District and the AA Southwest District. The district dissolved in 2007 after two of its members, Lee High School and Virginia High dropped to Group A with the formation of the Clinch Mountain District, which prompted Abingdon High School and Marion High School to move to the Southwest District.
The AA Piedmont District is a high school conference of the Virginia High School League that includes schools from Southwest and Southside Virginia, mostly in the Martinsville and the Danville areas. The schools of the Piedmont District compete in AA Region IV with the schools in the AA River Ridge District and the AA Southwest District. Until the 1990s, the AA Piedmont District was a member of AA Region III but was moved to balance the number of schools in the VHSL's AA regions. Due to declining school enrollment, Dan River High School became a member of the A Dogwood District beginning in the 2007–08 school year.

The league's mission was to establish and maintain "standards for student activities and competitions that promote education, personal growth, sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship." The secondary schools within the district compete in various events, predominantly athletics. The district was formed as part of a comprehensive redistricting plan to balance the four regions competing in Groups A and AA.
Virginia High School is a high school located in Bristol, Virginia. In 1999, Virginia High started offering the Tri-Cities area's first International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Classes from the Advanced Placement program are also offered to help students who are headed to college. A career and technical wing was added to the main school building to help students who wish to go into a trade straight from high school. Courses offered for this path include: culinary arts, cybersecurity, engineering and manufacturing, coding, business, horticulture, auto-mechanics, building trades, and nursing.
Lebanon High School is a public high school located in the town of Lebanon, Virginia which is also the county seat of Russell County, Virginia. They are a part of the Russell County Public Schools system and have been accredited by the Virginia Department of Education for the 2023–2024 school year. Mr. Ryan Potts is the current principal and Mrs. Whitney Sizemore is the vice principal. Prior to the opening of present-day Lebanon High School on September 3, 1985, the school was located at what is now Lebanon Middle School. The newly built school provided modern facilities and enhanced resources and capacity for students and faculty.
The Group 6A North Region was a division of the Virginia High School League. Along with the 6A South Region, it consisted of the largest high schools in Virginia. The region was formed in 2013 when the VHSL adopted a six classification format and eliminated the previous three classification system. It is a successor to the AAA Northern Region. The conference system was scrapped prior to the 2017–18 academic year, reverting the previous district. Regions were also renamed, with schools in the 6A North Region distributed into Group 6A Regions C& D.
