Career

Krishnamurthy began her writing career at The Michigan Daily . [5] She interned at CNN and Bad Boy Records and was in William Morris Endeavor's agent training program. [6] In 2012, she starred on MTV's Hip-Hop POV with Charlamagne Tha God and Amanda Seales. Sowmya has appeared on MSNBC, BBC, and CNN. [7] [8] In 2021, she launched The Lookout by SoundCloud on SiriusXM. [9]

She has provided commentary on The Breakfast Club and Ebro in the Morning. [10] [11] She is one of Complex's "25 Music Insiders to Follow on Twitter" with other journalists Elliott Wilson and Charlamagne Tha God. [12]

Literary Work

In 2023, Krishnamurthy authored Fashion Killa: How Hip-Hop Revolutionized High Fashion. The book began as a story in XXL. [13] This is the first anthology on hip-hop fashion. [14] [15] Kirkus Reviews and Booklist named the book as one of the "best books of 2023". [16] [17]

In January 2024, she announced that her next book is about Jay-Z and hip-hop label Roc-A-Fella Records: Roc-A-Fella Records: An American Rap Dynasty. [18]

Personal life

Krishnamurthy grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan and graduated from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. [19] [20] She is the first hip-hop journalist of Indian American descent and lives in New York City. [21] [22]

ELLE has called Krishnamurthy one of the women authors "redefining" the hip-hop books canon. [23]

Dwight Equan Grant, better known by his stage name Beanie Sigel, is an American rapper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His debut studio album, The Truth (2000) was met with critical and commercial success, peaking at number five on the Billboard 200. Along with his solo career, Grant was the de facto leader of the Philadelphia-based hip hop collective State Property, which he formed with Roc-A-Fella labelmates, and who debuted in 2002 with a namesake film in which Grant starred. The group released two well-received studio albums.

Marcellas Reynolds is an American actor, author, documentarian, and television host. His notable television appearances include GMA3, Access Hollywood, E! Live from the Red Carpet, The Bold and the Beautiful, Supreme Models, and Yes, Dear. Reynolds began his television career in 2002 on CBS's hit television series Big Brother season three, becoming the first openly gay black man cast on a major network reality series. All Money Is Legal, also known as A.M.I.L.: , is the only studio album by American rapper Amil. It was released on August 29, 2000, through Roc-A-Fella, Columbia, and Sony Music. Jay-Z, Damon Dash, and Amil served as executive producer with a team of producers that included Just Blaze. Before the album's release, Amil was best known for her feature on Jay-Z's 1998 single "Can I Get A...". She was one of several up-and-coming artists signed to Roc-A-Fella, alongside Memphis Bleek and Beanie Sigel, who released an album in 2000. Although it was her only album on Roc-A-Fella, Amil had been closely associated with the label and its co-founder Jay-Z, earning the moniker "First Lady of Roc-A-Fella".

Teyon Isiah Winfree, better known by his stage name Vado, is an American rapper. He formed the hip hop duo U.N. with hometown native Cam'ron in 2009, with whom he has released two collaborative albums—Heat in Here Vol. 1 (2010) and Gunz n' Butta (2011)—and the Boss of All Bosses mixtape series. As a solo act, Vado signed with DJ Khaled's We the Best Music Group, an imprint of Cash Money and Republic Records in 2013 to release his debut commercial single, "My Bae" the following year. Despite failing to chart, Vado made notable guest appearances on Khaled's studio albums We the Best Forever (2011), Suffering from Success (2013), and I Changed a Lot (2015); he continued releasing mixtapes for the regional New York audience until departing We the Best by 2020.
