Akina achieved national recognition when she won the 1981 season of the talent show Star Tanjō!. Her debut single "Slow Motion" was released to moderate success, peaking at number thirty on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart. However, Akina's popularity was pushed up by the follow-up single, "Shōjo A", which peaked at number five on the Oricon chart and has sold over 390,000 copies. Her second album Variation became her first number-one on the Oricon Weekly Albums Chart, staying three weeks atop. As an actress, she made her debut in 1985 with the appearance on the Japanese romance movie Ai, Tabidachi. After her extended hiatus from 2010 to 2014, Akina released two compilation album, All Time Best: Original and All Time Best: Utahime Cover, both of which were commercially successful. As of 2011, Akina has sold over 25.3 million records and was named as the third best-selling female Japanese idol singer of all-time.

She is best known through her songs Bokutachi no Yukue and Aozora no Namida, which were theme songs to animation programs Gundam Seed Destiny and Blood+, respectively. This Is the One is the third English studio album by Japanese American pop singer-songwriter Utada, released by Island Records in the United States digitally on March 24, 2009 and physically on May 12, 2009. The album was originally set to be released in Japan on March 4 but was pushed back to March 14. The album was only released in North America, Japan and some parts of Asia. In Japan, the album topped the Oricon's International Album chart and peaked at number three on the Weekly chart. In the United States, the album peaked at number 69 on the Billboard 200 chart. This Is the One was the supporting album of Utada's 2010 tour Utada: In the Flesh 2010. On December 21, 2009, the "Dirty Desire" remixes were released.

My Life is the second Japanese album by Alan, released in Japan on November 25, 2009 and in Taiwan and Hong Kong on November 27, 2009 under the literally translated title Wǒ de Rénshēng. The album was released in two different editions: a CD+DVD edition and a CD-only edition. The first press of the CD+DVD edition came with three bonus videos, including special live studio session performances of "Nada Sōsō" and "Natsukashii Mirai ", and a remix of "Namida", the B-side from her seventh single "Megumi no Ame". First pressings of the CD-only edition came with a 40-page mini photobook. The album's titular song, "My Life", was used as the theme song for the PSP game God Eater. A pop version of "Essence of Me", called "Diamond", is an A-side on her 12th single, "Diamond/Over the Clouds". On track 11, "Nobody Knows But Me", the shakuhachi is played by former Rin' member Tomoca. Tomoca also made a guest appearance at Alan's debut concert, "Voice of You", playing the shakuhachi while Alan performed the song. The album peaked at #16 on the weekly Oricon charts, charting for seven weeks.
"Orphans no Namida" is a song recorded by Japanese singer Misia. It was released on 25 November 2015 by Ariola Japan as the fifth and final single from her twelfth studio album, Love Bebop (2016). Misia wrote the lyrics and Shirō Sagisu composed, arranged and produced the track. "Orphans no Namida" serves as the first ending theme to the 2015 anime series Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. In commemoration of the 70th postwar broadcast, Misia performed the album version of "Orphans no Namida" at the 66th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, live from the Nagasaki Peace Park.
