Spiral, also known as Spiral Collective or Spiral Collectives, is a New Zealand publisher and group of artist collectives established in 1975 with a focus on female artists and voices. Members of Spiral have published and created a number of projects and works including, notably, the Spiral journal (seven issues published from 1976 to 1992), A Figurehead: A Face (1982) by Heather McPherson, The House of the Talking Cat (1983) by J.C. Sturm, the bone people (1984) by Keri Hulme (the first New Zealand novel to win the Booker Prize), numerous art exhibitions and documentary films.

Background and Spiral journal

Spiral was originally founded in 1975 in Christchurch by a group of women including Heather McPherson, Paulette Barr, Allie Eagle (also known as Alison Mitchell) and Kathryn Algie. [1] [2] McPherson had formed a Women Artists Group in order to encourage women writers and artists, and Spiral grew out of this group and out of the women's liberation movement. Their goal was to publish a literary journal for and by women. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] The first issue, Spiral 1 (1976) was printed by Wellington-based feminist press Herstory Press, [8] and was described by newspaper The Press as containing "poetry, prints, literary criticism, and thoughts on women's special place in the world of art". [9] The collective described itself in the second issue as follows: [8]

We are a collective of Christchurch women with a feminist perspective eager to provide New Zealand women with a literary/arts journal which is a forum for their own thoughts, feelings, attitudes in a nuturant supportive atmosphere.

Many of those involved in Spiral participated in women's activism more widely, which influenced the art produced by the group. [10] A letter published in an early issue suggested that work should be accepted on merit rather than limited to work by women only; in response, McPherson said she supported positive discrimination for women and noted the barriers faced by women to publication in most magazines. [11]

Six more issues of Spiral followed between 1977 and 1992, [2] and contained poetry, essays, letters, paintings, drawings, photographs, short stories and other artworks. [12] Different groups of women throughout New Zealand took responsibility for each publication, meaning that the issues varied in formatting and appearance. [13] The first four issues were published in Christchurch, the fifth in Wellington, the sixth in the Coromandel and the final issue by a New Zealand-wide group. [4] Local printers were used and women's bookstores and communities helped distribute the issues throughout the community. [4] [14] The magazine at times faced financial difficulties and was supported through fundraising efforts like poetry readings. [15] [16] The collective became a floating imprint used by different feminist groups. [2] [3]

In 1977, artist Joanna Paul, an early member of Spiral, connected a number of artists including McPherson, Eagle, Gladys Gurney (also known as Saj Gurney), Anna Keir, Bridie Lonie and Marian Evans in Wellington, with her project "A Season's Diaries". [17] This project developed into the Women's Gallery, a Wellington art gallery focussing on the expression of women's everyday lives through art. [18] [19] Spiral was closely connected with the Women's Gallery which was itself run as a collective, and with children's book publishing collective Kidsarus 2. [20] [21] The latter published Patricia Grace's well-known picture book, Kuia and the Spider / Te Kuia me te Pungawerewere (1981), in both English and Māori. [22] [23] Although the gallery closed in 1984, the Women's Gallery Incorporated charity continued until 2005 and was a fiscal sponsor for Spiral's projects. [18]

In 1982, the members of the Wellington collective that had published Spiral 5 (including Evans and Keir) decided that Spiral would become a publisher of books that were unable to find traditional publishers. [2] [1]

Book publishing

Spiral published seven books between 1982 and 1987, including notably A Figurehead: A Face (1982), a collection of poetry by McPherson (the first collection of poetry published in New Zealand by an out lesbian), [24] The House of the Talking Cat (1983) by J.C. Sturm and the bone people (1984) by Keri Hulme. [2] In 2021, Emma Espiner commented: "If you consider the history of New Zealand writing, it is both frightening and inspiring how influential the Spiral collective has been." [22]

the bone people had been rejected by several mainstream publishers who wanted Hulme to make significant changes to the work. [25] [26] The stories in The House of the Talking Cat had been written and collected by Sturm between the 1940s and mid-1960s but she had been unable to find a publisher at the time. [27] [28] [29] Marian Evans, a member of Spiral, said that both works "were part of significant community-based conversations and needed to be out in the world". [25] The publication of both works was carried out by collectives of two Māori women and one Pākehā woman. [30] [2] [31] An early review of the bone people by New Zealand writer and academic Peter Simpson commented that it was appropriate for the book to be published by Spiral because "the spiral form is central to the novel's meaning and design; it is in effect the code of the work informing every aspect from innumerable local details to the overall structure". [32] It was an immediate success, with the first edition selling out in weeks, [33] [26] and became the first New Zealand novel to win the Booker Prize in 1985. [2] [34] [35]

In early 2018, a collective of Spiral members Janet Charman, Lynne Ciochetto and Marian Evans published a collection of poetry by McPherson, who had died in 2017, called This Joyous, Chaotic Place: Garden Poems. The collection was published as part of an exhibition called "This Joyous, Chaotic Place: He Waiata Tangi-ā-Tahu", relating to McPherson and other colleagues at Mokopōpaki, an Auckland dealer gallery with Māori values at its centre. [2] [26] [36] [37] The event included the screening of 1980 interviews by McPherson and Sturm, [38] and was a project that formed part of the celebrations in New Zealand marking 125 years since women's suffrage. [2] Francis McWhannell, reviewing for The Pantographic Punch, commented: "As the title suggests, the exhibition is raucous, celebratory, even as it acknowledges marginalisation, oppression, and violence. It serves to remind us of the roots of contemporary feminist movements like #metoo." [39] In 2019 Mokopōpaki and Spiral co-published This Joyous, Chaotic Place: He Waiata Tangi-ā-Tahu, a substantial exhibition catalogue, described by magazine Art New Zealand as "a significant addition to this country's literary and artistic landscape". [40]

In 2018, Spiral assisted Automática Editorial with the publication of a Spanish edition of the bone people. [2]

Other activities

In 1984, the group were represented by Bub Bridger at the inaugural International Feminist Book Fair in London. The group was subsequently able to attend the second such fair in Oslo in 1986, with attendees including McPherson, Arapera Blank, Irihapeti Ramsden, Sturm, Patricia Grace, Stephanie Baxter and Marian Evans. Ramsden and Evans attended the third fair in Barcelona in 1990. [30] [2] [3]

From 1997 to 2009, the group ran a video project called Getting Free, about resilience following violation. The project was led by Evans and Bridie Lonie. Participants included gay artist Galvan Macnamara, Irihapeti Ramsden, Allie Eagle and her mother Lorna Mitchell, and Wai Turoa Morgan. [2] A similar audio-only history project was supported by Lonie and Juanita Ketchel in Dunedin. [3] The interviews with Macnamara were developed into a feature-length documentary film, Sister Galvan (2003). [25] In September 2003, Spiral organised a presentation of 50 short films, documentaries and other works by New Zealand women directors at City Gallery Wellington, called Mahi Ata Mahi Ahua: Women's Work in Film. [2]

In early 2016, Evans established an online publication called Spiral Collectives on the website platform Medium to provide information about Spiral's history, including articles by McPherson and other founders. [2]

New Zealand literature is literature, both oral and written, produced by the people of New Zealand. It often deals with New Zealand themes, people or places, is written predominantly in New Zealand English, and features Māori culture and the use of the Māori language. Before the arrival and settlement of Europeans in New Zealand in the 19th century, Māori culture had a strong oral tradition. Early European settlers wrote about their experiences travelling and exploring New Zealand. The concept of a "New Zealand literature", as distinct from English literature, did not originate until the 20th century, when authors began exploring themes of landscape, isolation, and the emerging New Zealand national identity. Māori writers became more prominent in the latter half of the 20th century, and Māori language and culture have become an increasingly important part of New Zealand literature.

<i>The Bone People</i> 1984 novel by Keri Hulme

The Bone People, styled by the writer and in some editions as the bone people, is a 1984 novel by New Zealand writer Keri Hulme. Set on the coast of the South Island of New Zealand, the novel focuses on three characters, all of whom are isolated in different ways: a reclusive artist, a mute child, and the child's foster father. Over the course of the novel the trio develop a tentative relationship, are driven apart by violence, and reunite. Māori and Pākehā culture, myths and language are blended through the novel. The novel has polarised critics and readers, with some praising the novel for its power and originality, while others have criticised Hulme's writing style and portrayals of violence.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Keri Hulme</span> New Zealand writer (1947–2021)

Keri Ann Ruhi Hulme was a New Zealand novelist, poet and short-story writer. She also wrote under the pen name Kai Tainui. Her novel The Bone People won the Booker Prize in 1985; she was the first New Zealander to win the award, and also the first writer to win the prize for a debut novel. Hulme's writing explores themes of isolation, postcolonial and multicultural identity, and Māori, Celtic, and Norse mythology.

Jacqueline Cecilia Sturm was a New Zealand poet, short story writer and librarian. She was one of the first Māori women to complete an undergraduate university degree, at Victoria University College, followed by a Masters of Arts in Philosophy. She was also the first Māori writer to have her work published in an English anthology. Her short stories were published in several collections and student magazines in the 1950s and early 1960s, and in 1983 a women's publishing collective printed a collection of her short stories as The House of the Talking Cat. She continued to write short stories and poetry well into the early 2000s, and is regarded today as a pioneer of New Zealand literature.

Paerau Corneal is a New Zealand ceramicist of Tūwharetoa and Te Āti Haunui-a-Paparangi descent.

Ngā Kaihanga Uku is a New Zealand collective of Māori Clayworkers. They formed in 1986 during a Ngā Puna Waihanga gathering, under the leadership of Baye Riddell and Manos Nathan. Founding members also include Paerau Corneal, Colleen Waata Urlich and Wi Taepa.

Joanna Margaret Paul was a New Zealand visual artist, poet and film-maker.

Hohi Ngapera Te Moana Keri Kaa was a New Zealand writer, educator, and advocate for the Māori language. She was of Ngāti Porou and Ngāti Kahungunu descent.

Heather Avis McPherson was a feminist poet, publisher and editor who played a key role in supporting women artists and writers in New Zealand. In 1976, she founded the Spiral Collective group and Spiral, a women's arts and literary journal that later published monographs. Her poetry book A Figurehead: A Face (1982) was the first book of poetry published in New Zealand by an openly lesbian woman. She published three further collections during her lifetime, and an additional two collections were published posthumously by fellow Spiral members.

The Women's Gallery was a collectively established and run art gallery in Wellington, New Zealand, showing only the work of women, that ran for four years between 1980 and 1984.

Judith Muriel Lonie was an Australian poet. She published one volume of poetry during her lifetime, with a second published posthumously; her poetry was often about personal or intimate subjects but treated in an impersonal way. Her poems have been included in several anthologies. Her husband, the New Zealand poet Iain Lonie, wrote three volumes of poetry about the intense grief he felt after her death.

The Haeata Māori Women Arts Collective was a Māori women's arts collective that started in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), New Zealand. The name refers to the first shaft of light at dawn.

The Artists' Co-op (Inc.) was a collectively run artists organisation which ran from March 1978 until 1982, and was based on the top floor of the Dalgety Woolstore in Thorndon Quay Wellington. It gave work, studios, a performance venue and exhibition space for artists.

Bridie Lonie is a New Zealand academic, arts educator, arts writer and artist. She lectured in art history and art theory at the Dunedin School of Art, served as head of the school over several periods between 2001 and 2021, and is now an emeritus member of the school. Her art has a particular focus on climate change and environmental issues.
