Spirit of the West is a 1984 album by Spirit of the West. It was their first album, and was released independently. The album is no longer in print, although portions of it were re-released on the 1989 compilation Old Material 1984-1986 .

From the official Spirit of the West website: "The first album. Absolutely and thoroughly deleted, and therefore a priceless artifact. What a lovely photo. See "Old Material", above, for the half of the songs which have been authorized and preserved in marketable form by the erstwhile Mann and Kelly."

He played guitars, flutes and bodhrán for the folk rock band Spirit of the West, for whom he was also the lead vocalist on some songs: Geoffrey Kelly and John Mann were the band's primary songwriters and founders. They were often referred to as the "Glummer Twins". Their partnership endured through the years until the final 3 SOTW shows at the beloved Commodore Ballroom in April 2016. The Spirit of Canada shows took place at the Commodore the following year with an all star cast of Canada's finest.

One of the band's most famous songs, it originally released in 1988 as the lead single from their second studio album Labour Day. While it failed to chart as a single in 1988, it was re-recorded and released in October 1991 as the second single from their fifth studio album Go Figure, peaking at number 70 in Canada in November 1991.

Barry Palmer is an English singer. He was a replacement for singer Helmut Köllen in the German band Triumvirat in 1976, and appeared on the albums Old Loves Die Hard and Pompeii in 1977.
